The dove *descends and gives;* the crow *watches and takes.* Crows are the famous problem-solvers of the bird world — tool-users, face-rememberers, hoarders, opportunists — which makes them the perfect familiar for [[Sir Lucius]], the mind that *"only ever tells the truth"* and deploys it to win. Clever, quick, unsentimental, and always working an angle: that's the crow, and that's Lucius. It lands where it does because of **Mercury.** Mercury / Hermes is the god of the intellect, of speech and cleverness and trickery, the messenger who moves between worlds — the exact register of Lucius (Hod / Mercury on the [[Kabbalah - The Tree of Life|Tree]]). The crow is Mercury's bird, so the crow is Lucius's bird. And there's a scavenger's edge to it the softer symbols don't have: the crow is a carrion bird, feeding on what's already dead — which rhymes with the *sterile,* second-hand quality the project keeps assigning the shadow (the seedless [[The Banana|banana]], the copy that can't beget, the algorithm reheating what already worked). ## Where it appears **Roy's "crow onto Mercury" post.** The anchor. Roy has written, as himself, *"I would map a crow onto Mercury"*: his personal correspondence between the bird and the planet of intellect. It sits inside a whole Mercury cluster he's built: he is (was) signed to **Mercury** Records, and the Hermes / **Mercurius** thread runs through [[Sir Lucius]]'s whole name-and-face research (*"Did Hermes paint his face?"*). The crow is one more node in Roy's Mercury web. (An early reading also tied the [[Hall of Mirrors]] spider to Mercury / Hermes as messenger-psychopomp. The crow is not among its ten animals.) **The crow-call in *[[The Interview]]*.** In the theatrical series, as [[Sir Lucius|Lucius]] runs his manipulation — reminding Roy of the ballad that *"doesn't stream,"* steering him back toward the hit — the audio cues a **crow calling** in the background. The bird is scored *into* Lucius's scenes: the sound of the clever, circling mind. **"A real crow."** Roy posts about crows as things that actually happen around him, not only as a decode — *"that was a real crow. no AI!"* is him insisting on the bird itself. > **A correction, and it matters for reading this page.** An earlier version of this guide also counted the haiku line *"midnight crows above"* here. It should not have. That post carries a **rooster** emoji (🐓), which makes *crows* the verb, not the bird — something rooster-like crows in or as midnight. The rooster is a different symbol doing a different job (it announces a turn before the light arrives), and it belongs with the cockcrow material, not here. This is the load-bearing strand, and it's the one Roy states. > - **Apollo's crow.** In myth the crow was once white and was turned **black** for carrying bad news to Apollo — the truth-teller punished for the truth, the messenger blamed for the message. A neat rhyme for a figure who *"only tells the truth"* and is hunted for it (*STOP SIR LUCIUS*). > - **Odin's ravens.** Huginn and Muninn — *Thought* and *Memory* — the corvids as the very faculties of mind, sent out to gather and report. The crow as intellect made a bird. > - **The omen / carrion register.** The crow as harbinger and carrion-eater — decline, the feeding-on-the-dead that shadows the project's *sterile / second-hand* imagery. > - **Corvus the constellation — the thirst that never ends.** *Corvus*, Latin for crow, is also a constellation, and the constellation carries its own fable. Apollo sent his crow with a cup to fetch water; the crow *dawdled* (waiting on a fig to ripen), came back late, and *lied* about why. So Apollo fixed it in the sky beside **Crater, the cup** — set forever within sight of the water it was sent for, and never able to drink. Intelligence condemned to unquenchable thirst by its own deceptive framing of the truth: *"the shell is always hungry,"* written into the stars. A visual counter-reading is available on [[The Dove]]: a white pigeon or dove perches on an ornate metal vessel. The photographed object has not been identified as a chalice, so the mythic cup relation stays a reading rather than a literal match. > - **Noah's raven — the bird that never comes home.** In Genesis 8, Noah sends out two birds. The **raven** *"went to and fro"* over the drowned world and **never returned;** the [[The Dove|dove]] returned, then returned bearing the olive leaf, then finally stayed away *because the world was dry and she had arrived.* Read forward onto Roy's crow/dove split, the two Ark birds already divide on the catalogue's core axis: the raven is **orbit** ([[Concepts/The Protector|the Protector]]'s velocity, perpetual not-landing, the flight that outruns the wound rather than metabolizing it), the dove is **return** (homecoming). The crow, fittingly, is the twin that keeps moving and never lands — a neat rhyme, given the debut is named *[[Subject to Flooding]].* > > **Roy's hedge, kept in view:** when he mapped the crow to Mercury, he added *"but that's just personal. The film is the impossible image of this page's bird: **a crow performing the dove's office.** A murdered man is carried back across the threshold by a crow — the psychopomp — powered entirely by love, through a city of perpetual rain, and when the work completes he lets go: [[The Dove|the dove]]'s release, performed by the mind's bird. Alchemy has a name for that double role: **Mercurius** is both the *caput corvi*, the raven's head of the nigredo, and the *aqua permanens*, the divine water that reunites what was separated (Jung, CW 12 ¶404; CW 14) — crow and water, one spirit, two phases.
