One arm reaches out holding the Mercury sign ☿, a crescent set on a circle set on a cross. Above the head floats a small house with a gabled roof and a door. There is no blade and no weapon anywhere on the figure. The caption names *Michael the Fox* and adds, in parentheses, *who is a Scientist*. The room is opened by the shortest key in this bestiary: the single character `8`. ## What the station does The eighth station is Hod, Mercury, and like the Dove's it is stated plainly. In the basic symbol map, [[Sir Lucius|Lucius]] is the Mercury pole: the intellect, the crow (Corvus), the green apple, *El Roi* on the neck, Hod. The Fox holds Mercury's sign; the room opens on 8, Hod's place on the Tree; and [[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - The Equations|the Equations]] say *Fox = Mind*. On the board, the fox's row carries the station numeral 8 beside a small photograph of a red fox on snow, so the room's key is also the row's own number. The board's scale gives the rung the note D and the colour orange. Crowley's line at this station, *wavering, flowing*, reads as thought as quicksilver. The two board lines hold the station's sharpest idea. Coming down, the line is *I was a scientist*: the mind is an identity, something the speaker is. Going up, it is *Its thoughts followed me*: not my thoughts but its thoughts, the mind as something that trails behind the speaker and can be watched. The same station is owned on the way down and let go of on the way up. That reads as the Lucius work written as a change of direction. The project's instruction about Lucius is to see his shadow and then say *these thoughts are not my own*; the ascending line reads as that instruction, written at his own station. In *[[Sir Rabbit]]* the Fox is the guide who traps. He arrives after lunch on the Moon with bread, says he knows the Game of Many Things, and invites Rabbit into a box where, he promises, Rabbit will find the thing that beats him. The lid slams shut. The Fox tells him there is one simple lock and the key is hidden in himself: he only has to listen for the knock. Rabbit decides he has been tricked and sits. Then a voice from the other side tells him he is trapped, that he must use his other mind, and that it has been mapped. In the silence he hears something like a heartbeat he had forgotten, knocks on that spot, and a door appears, unlocked. The pun carries the lesson. The thing that *beats* Rabbit, the defeat the game promised, turns out to be a beat, the heartbeat that opens the box. What the Fox teaches is not a cleverer thought but a different use of mind: attention turned from the puzzle to the pulse. The poem is careful here. It does not throw the mind away; the voice tells Rabbit to use his *other* mind. That is the station's constructive reading, mind that serves the heart instead of ruling it. The Fox also causes the distress he then resolves, so he can be read as a trickster teacher or as a manipulator excused by results, and the poem lets him be both. This guide does not read the poem's Fox as Lucius: he is cunning in method, but his trap ends in a door. The name adds its own tension. In the tradition Michael is the archangel with the sword; here he holds a scientist's sign, and the ladder's blade turns up three rungs higher, in the hand of [[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - 5 The Horse (Cinnamon)|Cinnamon the Horse]]. An absence in one small drawing cannot show that the sword was moved on purpose. What stands is the arrangement: the martial gear at the martial seat, an instrument at the seat of mind. The name also reaches a song. In *[[Not Your Homie]]*, sung in Lucius's voice, the speaker likens himself to a Michael and calls himself a psycho. In *[[The Watchers]]*, where the catalogue does mean Michael Jackson, it uses the surname; this Michael has none. This guide's working reading is that the bare Michael points at the Fox, the mind-station naming itself, since a psychopath is the plainest word for mind without heart. Michael Myers remains a live alternative, and the song has three credited writers, so the line cannot be pinned to one person's intent. ## Where it connects - **[[Sir Lucius]]**: the Mercury pole of the basic symbol map; the Fox's two board lines read as the instruction to recognise his thoughts as not one's own. - **[[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - 7 The Dove (Venus)|The Dove]]**: heart and mind as the two hips of one stride (*left hip of a dove*, *right hip of a fox*); in the poem, the Fox's box opens straight into the Dove's garden. - **[[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - The Equations|The Equations]]**: *Fox = Mind* is both a room's name and the key to the next door, and the poem pages behind those doors carry the Fox's arrival and his box. - **[[Down to You]]**: a song that hands the task from head to heart; it cannot be worked out with the head, only listened for, like the beat behind the box's wall. - **[[Symbols/Beth|Beth]]**: the Hebrew letter that means *house*, the letter tradition gives to Mercury. ## In the tradition The fox is one of Mercury's animals in Agrippa's planetary chapters, and *777*'s nearest animal at Hod is the jackal, the same canine slot. Hermes, Mercury's Greek face, is trickster, messenger and patron of learning and alchemy, which is how a fox can be a scientist. Michael is Hod's archangel in the Golden Dawn arrangement (Agrippa's scheme gives him to the Sun instead, so the fit is to the Golden Dawn stream). The house above the head has a letter behind it: Beth means house, and the Golden Dawn gives Beth to Mercury and to the tarot's Magician. Dion Fortune describes Netzach as the sphere of force and Hod as the sphere of form. Read with the Dove one station up, that is the heart-and-mind pairing in the tradition's own terms: force needs a form to be expressed, and a form needs something living to carry. The body codes also mirror a common Kabbalistic body-map, which puts Netzach's side of the Tree on the body's right: here the dove takes the left hip and the fox the right, and the shoulders are reversed too. Tradition carries both conventions, so this is a consistency, not proof of intent. ## Open questions - Is the floating house Mercury's Beth, a model the mind lives inside, or simply a home the Fox carries with him? - Does *Not Your Homie*'s Michael mean the Fox? No public gloss settles it. - *Right hip of a fox* is on the Upload material but opens no room, while the Fox's room is keyed by its number.
