The face is human, with large eyes, framed by long hair. The figure's left hand holds up a small lamp, and short rays above it show the lamp is lit; the other hand holds nothing. At the chest sits a many-petalled flower, with a line running out to the word *Rose*. The flower is the top of one long stroke that runs down through a circle and a crossbar to a short tail: the Venus sign ♀ (some read it as an ankh), drawn as the figure's own centre line and flowering at the heart. Nothing on the sheet says *left hip*; that code comes from the board, where the dove is animal 7 and the left hip is body station 4. **Which picture belongs to the room.** The code *left hip of a dove* opens room 79, and room 79 does not show this drawing. It is titled *Roy "Bird †" Sketch* and displays a photograph of a different pencil drawing on a drywall surface: a small haloed bird with its wings swept up and three dots on its chest, a rayed sun above it, and the wing of a neighbouring bird entering from the edge. It showed that bird when it was first opened in August 2022, and still does. The Venus portrait sits in the Hall's public image store under the same code-derived file name, but no room is known to display it: the maze's master list gives the one code to two entries, the portrait and the sketch, and only the sketch became a room. The neighbouring bird is *Bird ∆* (room 82), with the same three chest dots.  *What room 79 displays under the code "left hip of a dove": a photographed pencil bird on a textured surface, haloed, wings raised in a V, three dots on its chest (two above one), with a rayed sun above and wing tips of neighbouring drawings at the edges.*  *Room 82, "Roy "Bird ∆" Sketch" (code "Triangle resolution"): the neighbouring haloed bird, wings raised, a forked tail, and the same three chest dots. This marked bird appears on the cover of the single tomorrow (ANGLE OF ETERNITY).* ## What the station does The seventh station is Netzach, Venus, and it is one of the two planet placements the work states plainly. In the basic symbol map, Roy is the Venus pole: the dove (named Cygnus), the heart, the sword, *El Roy*, Netzach. The ladder draws that bird on that seat, captions it with the planet's name, and makes the planet's sign the figure's own spine. [[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - The Equations|The Equations]] put it in one word: *Dove = Heart*. The board's scale gives the rung the note E and the colour green. *[[Sir Rabbit]]* explains the lamp before any tradition does. Rabbit has just escaped the Fox's box by hearing a heartbeat he had forgotten; a door appears, and a Dove is waiting in an emerald garden tree, holding a lamp so that Rabbit can see. The Dove tells him, kindly, that he must be on his way. When Rabbit says he is lost, the Dove tells him not to be afraid, that a friend is coming, but that he must go, because a shadow is at play. (The poem calls the Dove *he*.) The board's ascending line, looking for a lamp hidden in a garden, reads as the same scene from the seeker's side, and the caption's *(w/ Lamp)* as a pointer to it. Read together, portrait, board line and poem are three views of one lamp. Read from those three, the station's work is light given for someone else's next step. The lamp is held out at arm's length, away from the body, while the figure's own flower stays at its chest; in the poem the light is there so that Rabbit can see, and the kindness ends in sending him on. That reads as the heart's particular kind of help, the kind that leaves the traveller more able to continue rather than more dependent. The Dove also names a danger it cannot remove and does not pretend otherwise. Coming down the ladder, the station's line is about arriving late to the party; going up, it is about searching for a light that is hidden. On this ladder the heart is not a place of arrival but a direction, and *Bearing*, the one word copied from Crowley for this station, means both a direction and something carried. The body address takes the same idea into movement. The dove's code names the left hip, and the fox's phrase, one station down, names the right. Read together they are the pair that lets a body stand and turn, with the heart station and the mind station side by side in one stride. In the basic symbol map that is Roy and Lucius, Venus and Mercury. The Hall keeps the dove in other registers too. Room 25, *Venus is a dove*, opened by *F316* (a cell address on the board), is a photograph of a white dove in flight on black, and the same image also serves a second room, *How to Steer the Soul*. It is opened by the name of *Grey in A#*, the room the Owl's body phrase opens, so a chain that starts at the ladder's second station ends on a dove. ## In the tradition The dove has been Venus's bird since antiquity, and the planetary tables keep it there: Crowley's *777* calls the dove especially sacred to Venus, and Agrippa's Venus birds include the pigeon and the turtledove. The lamp is traditional too. *777* gives Netzach, Venus's seat, the Lamp and Girdle as its magical weapon and the emerald as its stone, and Dion Fortune's *Mystical Qabalah* gives Netzach the lamp and girdle, and the rose, as its symbols. The drawing has the lamp and a labelled rose, and the poem's Dove waits in an emerald garden tree, so every element of the scene sits on this seat. The poem explains the lamp first; the tradition only adds a reason it belongs here. The 1955 revision of *777* also sets a lamp at the crown, glossed as a light shining from above that illuminates the whole work. Beside the dove's name, Cygnus, the swan, the Dove's lamp can be read as the crown's light carried down to the heart. That is this guide's reading, and the characters stay separate. Two older charges travel with any dove: the Holy Spirit descending in Christian art, and the flood dove that goes out, comes back with a leaf, and finally stays away once the world is dry, where the raven only went to and fro. A rose on a cross-barred staff is also the Rosicrucian emblem's arrangement. These are inherited currents the drawing takes part in; none of them is stated on the page. ## Open questions - Why does one code belong to two pictures? What, if anything, the portrait's entry in the master list was meant to carry instead is not known. - The caption names Venus, and the poem calls its Dove *he*. Is the portrait the poem's Dove, or a second one? - The flight photograph serves both *Venus is a dove* and *How to Steer the Soul*, and [[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - 10 The Rabbit (Lemon)|the Rabbit]]'s key is the board cell that asks how to create and steer a soul.
