The whale is at the top, well above the labelled sea, with a planet in between; its tail rests on a small unlabelled crest of water of its own. The *extra eyes* are a pair set side by side at the front of the head, as if added to the eyes a whale has on its sides. The almond on the flank may be a third eye, a fin or a marking. The mouth is a single closed curve, and no stroke on the sheet reads as a tooth. The word *Binah* is not on the sheet; it comes from the room's title, *Queen Binah*. *GOD* is written in capitals. On the board's animal column, the Whale's own cell holds a black-and-white photograph of a whale seen from below, rising head first, which by its markings appears to be a humpback. ## What the station does **One seat, marked three ways.** Binah, "Understanding", is the third station of the Tree. The tradition calls it the Supernal Mother, gives it the planet Saturn, and titles it the Great Sea. The Whale carries that seat three ways: in its caption, *GOD the Mother on Saturn*, over waves labelled *Great Sea*; in its room's title, *Queen Binah*; and in its key, *teeth of a whale*, the body phrase for this station. **The dark that receives.** The emanation page's line here is *I hear the word*: one station down from the Owl's speaking, the Whale hears. The ascending line is two words, *in darkness*. The descending line, *I was in reverse*, repeats word for word part of a line of [[Another Way II Heaven]], *Then I was in reverse*, which is typed onto the board a few rows above, beside the Owl, at the point where the singer has spoken One into Two and is turned around. The Whale's own black rows carry the song's next lines, about a Darkness and a Light that could dance forever.  *"Roy's Lost Darkness Poem Descending", a Hall of Mirrors screenshot of the board. Small photographs run down one column: a swan, an owl, a whale, then a vulture pressed against a leaping dolphin, and on down to a rabbit. At the top, lyric cells of "Another Way II Heaven" include "Then I was in reverse". Laid over the sheet in large type is the descending poem, one line per animal; the whale's line reads "I was in reverse", marked 3.* Read together, **the Whale gives the imagined order a containing depth: the dark sea in which a spoken word is heard and held long enough to take form.** That is a strong reading, not a stated one. The extra eyes make the dark a perceiving one: something can be seen inside darkness before it reaches daylight or speech. **Limit, and the teeth.** The drawing separates what the tradition keeps together: the Mother-whale at the top, Saturn in the middle, the Great Sea at the bottom, with blank paper between. One reading this guide keeps: a whale is the sea's greatest force, and its own size is what holds it down, which is Saturn's work of limit done to the Great Sea. The key adds a hard edge. The drawing shows the mouth closed and no teeth, and a humpback is a baleen whale, which has none, so the key names what the pictured whales do not show. Read by what they do, teeth are the body's cutting instrument; in the tradition Binah is where undivided force is given limit and form. The fit is a reading. The key also names the teeth where the familiar whale story, Jonah's, is about the belly, so it reads as the threshold rather than the chamber. That story is on the board too. The board's adaptation of the Hero's Journey includes a stage called *Belly of Whale*. In Joseph Campbell's pattern that is the swallowing that comes before rebirth. A whale can shelter or engulf; what matters is whether what holds a life also lets it come out. **A question about GOD.** The caption writes *GOD* in capitals. On the emanation page, every "GOD" in Crowley's lines was dropped, including the one at the next station, where Crowley has "GOD the Father and Mother is concealed in Generation". Whether the GOD taken out there resurfaces in the Mother's caption one station up is a question, not a claim. **Below it, the gap.** Directly under the Whale on the board's column sits the unnumbered Vulture, in the gap between the three highest stations and the seven below. Crowley's *777* places "Maut the Mother Vulture" at Binah, this station, which makes Maut one of the two candidate names for that bird. The Vulture's page weighs the name. ## Where it connects - **[[Another Way II Heaven]]**: the source of the Whale's descending line, word for word, laid out on the board beside the animals. - **[[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - The Vulture|the unnumbered Vulture]]**: the bird in the gap below, where a heard word becomes relation. One of its candidate names belongs to this seat. - **[[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - 2 The Owl (RAtziel)|2 · The Owl]]**: speaks the word the Whale hears, and holds the song's reversal line on its rows. - **[[Hall of Mirrors/The Bestiary - 4 The Dolphin (Jupiter)|4 · The Dolphin]]**: the next sea creature, below the gap, where the emanation page's line is *Father + Mother concealed in generation*. - **[[Mary]]**: this guide's Mary page keeps a Kabbalistic frame in which the Upper Mother at Binah is one end of Mary's ascent. Mary is not on this sheet, and the link is a frame, not a claim. ## In the tradition These are the nearest analogues, not claims about where the drawing came from. - **Binah.** In the Golden Dawn scheme Binah is Understanding and the Supernal Mother, the seat of Saturn, and its titles include Marah, the Great Sea. The caption and the label on the waves use that vocabulary. - **A whale taken from a path.** Crowley's *777* does not list a whale at Binah; its animals there are the woman and the bee. It places the whale, with "all beasts of transport", on the path of Cancer, which in *777*'s words "leads from the Supernal Binah to Geburah", and explains the whale by "its power of blowing water". The ladder seats the whale at that path's upper end. In that listing the whale is a carrier, one of the beasts of transport; at Binah it also holds. - **The belly of the whale.** In Campbell's hero's journey the hero is swallowed before being reborn, and Jonah is its best-known form. - **The Mother Vulture.** *777* places "Maut the Mother Vulture" at Binah, and in Egyptian writing the vulture sign stands for *mwt*, "mother". ## Open questions - **Is the GOD in the caption the one dropped from Crowley's line at 4?** - **Is the almond on the flank a third eye?** If it is, *extra eyes* means more eyes, not only eyes turned forward. - **What water is under the tail?** The whale rests on a small unlabelled crest, separate from the Great Sea below.
