# Water > **One-line reading.** Water is the catalogue's element of emotion and love — Roy's own key says so — and like [[Fire|the fire]] it refuses to pick a side: the same water drowns, stagnates, or carries you home, depending entirely on whether it is still moving. As of July 8, 2026, the feed states the equation outright: *"Love is water."* ## At a glance - **What it does** — dissolves the walls between people (the flood as cure), sits in the tank going nowhere (the aquarium as trap), or completes the circle (the cycle as return). Water is the [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|Loop/Circle]] test poured into liquid form. - **Carried by** — [[Roy]]. In his own four-element key, *"water being emotion"* — the heart's medium, opposite the mind's [[Fire|fire]]. And, since the July 2026 post, by love itself. - **Appears in** — the debut's very title, *[[Subject to Flooding]]* · the 2026 water-line posts (*"Enter the water," "Baptize America," "I am the shore," "The waters are rising," "The ocean does not need to perform," "Love is water"*) · [[Concepts/The Aquarium|The Aquarium]] · the teal "flooded place" light in [[The Colors]] · the board's *"bottomless well"* and the Hero's-Journey wheel's own **"Water"** station · [[SOL]]'s solar counterpart. - **Confidence** — the element-assignment and the dated posts are grounded; the three-registers split is a strong reading; the traditions are framework, labeled; the film-resonance is resonance, labeled. ## What it does Three registers, one element. **The flood — water arriving all at once.** Roy's stated meaning for the debut title holds the doubleness on purpose: with the world fragile, *"we should all let go of ego… After all, we are all Subject to Flooding."* We can all drown, *and* the walls between us can all come down — vulnerability and communion as the same exposure. What the flood destroys is the separation the record diagnoses as the disease. *"Jericho fell like a wave."* The title contains its own remedy (see [[Subject to Flooding]] for the full argument). **The tank — water held.** *"Everyone's a guru. We are now fully in the aquarium"* (April 2026). The fish's medium is invisible because it never had another one; the tank filters and recirculates, and the water goes nowhere. This is water in a Loop: motion without return. The staging agrees — the underground scenes wash teal, the color [[The Colors]] already glosses as *the flooded place*. And [[Concepts/Nigredo|the alchemical page]]'s keystone warning applies here in liquid: the Circus specializes in a dark — and a water — that never moves. **The cycle — water moving.** The ocean is scattered by the sun into drops without number; every drop falls, flows, and attempts the trip back to the source; some are dammed, bottled, tanked, frozen, and still the attempt never stops; what returns is lifted and scattered again. What the cycle demonstrates is not purification but **identity persisting through transformation**: ocean, vapour, cloud, rain, river, groundwater, ice, mist and dew are all still water. That is the [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|Circle]] running as weather, and the Loop/Circle test transfers with it, held water repeating in place while concealing its repetition, the cycle repeating with the possibility of return. ## "Love is water" The post is three words, complete: **"Love is water"** — @JagwarTwin on X, **July 8, 2026**, 18:32 UTC, no image, no link (post ID 2074924634466857428; verified via a same-minute Internet Archive capture). It caps a running series — *"Love requires tremendous courage"* (June 4), *"Love is the highest paying work there is"* (June 9) — and a year of water-language on the same feed: *"Enter the water"* (Feb 15, reply), *"The ocean does not need to perform"* (Mar 11), *"Baptize America"* (Apr 8), *"I am the shore. I am not the wave."* (Apr 10), *"The waters are rising but so am I"* (Apr 13). Read against the album it follows, and this is a reading, not a claim: [[SOL]] leaves the record on *"Love. Love is a question"* — then strips even those words away. Three and a half months later the same voice posts a three-word predicate. The question, answered in the grammar it was asked in: not an explanation (that was [[Move To You]], 2018), not a paradox (that was SOL), but an element. **The sentence has a thirteenth-century twin.** Not a resonance — a near-identical statement, in a tradition of the kind Roy reads. Rumi, in the *Divan-i Shams*, translated by R. A. Nicholson: > *Prize not at all life that has passed without love;* > **Love is the Water of Life:** *receive it in thy heart and soul.* The Persian is ***āb-i ḥayāt ast 'ishq*** — literally *love is the water of life*. (Nicholson, *Selected Poems from the Dīvāni Shamsi Tabrīz*, Cambridge, 1898, Notes p. 216; the *āb-e ḥayāt* is an authentic Persian-Sufi motif, tied to Khidr and the fountain in the Land of Darkness.) Nothing suggests Roy is quoting it — no source connects him to Nicholson or the *Divan*. What it establishes is that *"Love is water"* is a **statable position** with seven centuries of standing, not an aphorism improvised for a feed. The equation has roots in his own record. In a 2021 interview Roy cited **Masaru Emoto's** water-crystal experiments — water shown words of love and gratitude forming harmonious crystals. (Flag kept in view: Emoto's claims are scientifically unsupported; what the citation grounds is that Roy has been thinking love-*into*-water since at least 2021, not that the crystals are real.) Add *"A single drop of rain can be the start of a flood"* (2020) and the 2018 title-gloss, and the July post stops reading like a mood and starts reading like a thesis finally compressed. ## Roy's own element-key (grounded) The reason this page gets to exist at all: Roy states the assignment himself — *"fire being consciousness, **water being emotion**, air being thought, Earth being the physical reality you can touch"* — and places water in the West in his stated elemental directions (see [[Fire]] for the full quote and sourcing). So *"Love is water"* is not an imported correspondence; it is an equation inside his own published system. Love = the emotion-element. The heart's medium, as fire is the mind's. ## The shoreline, 2010 to 2026 Roy's water language has a long spine, and its earliest point is a band name. Before Jagwar Twin he fronted **Eye Alaska** (roughly 2006 to 2011), and *Alaska* descends from the Aleut *alaxsxaq*, glossed in the standard reference as "the mainland," and more literally as **the object toward which the action of the sea is directed**. In a 2010 interview Roy read the name that way himself, as looking toward that which the sea breaks against, adding that the people others follow are usually the ones who have been through enough to make them wiser. Set the three self-namings in a row and the relation inverts: | Year | The naming | The relation to the water | |---|---|---| | 2010 | **Eye Alaska** | **Looking toward** the shore | | 2018 | ***Subject to Flooding*** | **Being flooded**, the sea overwhelming the self | | 2026 | ***"I am the shore. I am not the wave"*** | **Being the shore**, the thing the sea breaks against | Look toward the shore, be flooded, become the shore. Read that way the 2026 aphorism is the 2010 band name's own meaning finally claimed in the first person, sixteen years later. The three statements are grounded; **the arc that connects them is this guide's reading**, and it is exactly the sort of figure that is easy to build from three points selected after the fact. It is offered as a reading and not as a documented intention. Two findings from a July 2026 provenance check bear on it, and they pull in opposite directions, which is why both are kept. **The phrasing appears to be Roy's own.** A search for *"I am the shore. I am not the wave"* and its near variants across quote archives, poetry, lyrics and social platforms surfaced no pre-2026 source. Every famous formulation in this family turned out to be *ocean* versus wave rather than *shore* versus wave. That matters, because it means the line is not a borrowed aphorism, and the "claimed in the first person" reading survives. **But the image is not the mystics'.** The ocean-and-wave teachings (Thich Nhat Hanh, Nisargadatta, Watts, the Rumi tradition) all exist to *dissolve* the boundary: the wave was never separate from the water. Roy's shore **keeps** that boundary. The shore is not the sea; it is the other term, the fixed thing the sea breaks against. Whatever he is doing, it is not the standard dissolution move. The nearest attested pre-2026 use of shore in Roy's sense is not mystical at all but clinical, the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy "waves on the shore" visualisation, in which the beach is you and the waves are passing thoughts, with the sand remaining. That vocabulary circulates widely and without citation in wellness discourse, which makes it **inherited substrate** rather than a source: a current the line may be participating in, not a text it quotes. Held there, at resonance. A third note keeps the section honest. *"I'm the one who stays,"* the clause that completes the post, belongs to the register of relational fidelity rather than metaphysics, and no wisdom tradition carries it. The post reads as a fusion of two unrelated registers, which is itself a small argument for original composition. > [!warning]- Two citation flags on this section > **The Aleut gloss is looser in circulation than in the reference.** "The object against which the sea breaks" is a common paraphrase; the attested gloss is "the mainland," literally *the object toward which the action of the sea is directed*. The sense carries, the wording does not, so quote the attested form. > > **The 2010 interview is a video, which is why it is invisible to text search.** The band-name gloss comes from *"Eye Alaska (Brandon) interview with PunkWorldViews.com,"* published 14 June 2010 by Denise Borders, recorded before the band's hometown show at the House of Blues in Anaheim. The article page carries only photographs and an introduction; the interview itself is the **embedded video**, still public on the interviewer's own channel at [youtube.com/watch?v=Jl3gMpAHA3w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl3gMpAHA3w). Three separate text searches in July 2026 returned nothing for the simple reason that it was never text. Cite the video, not the article page, and confirm the exact wording by ear before presenting any of it as verbatim. ## The two birds and the two waters The [[The Crow|crow]]/[[The Dove|dove]] split runs straight through this element. Corvus, the crow constellation, is fixed in the sky beside Crater, the cup, eternally within sight of the water it was sent to fetch and can never drink: the mind's unquenchable thirst. The Hall of Mirrors' white **dove on the chalice** is the exact counter-image, the heart reaching the very cup the crow is denied. And Genesis 8 splits the same way over the flood itself, the raven that goes to and fro and never lands, the dove that returns with the olive leaf. The two birds are the two possible relations to this element: thirst and drink, orbit and return. The bird-to-character assignment is Roy's own, and the frame it comes with matters as much as the assignment: the birds are **inherited substrate**, an older current the work participates in, not a cipher Roy authored. Read them as mythic emergence rather than intentional encoding. (The alchemical rhyme, in which Mercurius is both the raven's head and the *aqua permanens*, so that crow and water are one spirit in two phases, lives in [[Water — The Deep End]].) > [!descend] The Deep End > The comparative floor beneath this page, the older currents (Thales, the Emerald Tablet, alchemy's *aqua permanens*, Chesed's element, Campbell, the drop-and-ocean lineage, Tao 78), a stage-by-stage map of the soul's water cycle, the Chandogya's three destinies, the Greek and Neoplatonic descent, the Orphic thirst, the Christian, Jewish and Islamic circulations, the moderns, and the guards that keep the lot honest, lives in [[Water — The Deep End]]. Dense and comparative by design. The page you are on stands without it. > [!note]- Advanced reading — refraction: one light made visible through many situated vessels (framework, and deliberately not a stage) > A rainbow makes unity perceptible through a multitude of **situated** refractions. Sunlight carries a spectrum that is not visible as separate colours. Each droplet refracts and internally reflects the light it receives, dispersing wavelengths in different directions. An observer standing in one place receives a narrow band from droplets at one angular position, and other bands from droplets at others. The arc appears only through the relation among **source, countless vessels, and a particular eye**, which is why two people standing apart are not seeing the same bow: they are not seeing the same water. > > Stated that carefully, it is an unusually good physical figure for the [[Hall of Mirrors]] doctrine, one light disclosed through many partial perspectives, none of them complete. It sits beside [[The Colors]], where Roy's rainbow is whole (a halo, an arc, the full spectrum of a person) and Lucius's returns as a mosaic sewn onto black, the same spectrum fragmented into ornament rather than into disclosure. It also gives a physical shape to Roy's *"You can't see something for someone else"* (2026-03-27), though the fit is a resonance and nothing stronger. > > **Three precisions the reading must not lose.** A droplet is not assigned one intrinsic colour; the narrowness is a fact about **viewing geometry**, not about the drop, and the drop carries no unique message of its own. A single droplet *can* disperse light into a spectrum under controlled conditions; what it cannot produce for an ordinary distant observer is the large atmospheric **arc**, so "no single drop makes a rainbow" is true of the arc and false of the dispersion. And a droplet **receives the full incident spectrum**, which is cleaner than saying it contains the whole light: there is no miniature sun inside it. > > **Why this is not a numbered stage.** Refraction is an optical event that may accompany precipitation, not a step in the hydrological sequence. Numbering it would make the stage table look more scientifically exact while making it less so. Held here at `[~]`, and as an open question rather than a mechanism: nothing in the released work connects rainbow optics to the rainbow in **BMRC**'s name, which is a site-metadata capture and Lucius's own corporate signature, not a statement of doctrine. > [!note]- Advanced reading — The Crow (1994): the crow serving the water (resonance, not a claim) > No Jagwar Twin source references the film; this drawer records a structural resonance catalogued in July 2026, the week of the post. Compact form — the full thread, with its guardrails, lives on [[Brandon]]: a murdered man is carried back across the threshold by a crow — the psychopomp bird — powered entirely by love, through a city of perpetual rain; grief as weather (*"Wherever I am that's where the weather is,"* Roy, Jan 2023). The film's most famous line, *"It can't rain all the time,"* is in-story a lyric from the dead man's own song — the fragment by which he is recognized (cf. [[Soul Is A Star]]'s *"just one verse,"* [[SOL]]'s ghost-melody). In this vault's own [[The Colors|color-code]] the figure wears both teams at once — black clothes, white painted face, the split held on one body like the black/white nail polish — moving through a world whose red marks whoever is running the show. And the ending is [[The Dove|the dove]]'s signature performed by a crow: the work completed, the love released without possession. The mind-bird flying the heart's errand — *"my mind must serve my heart,"* with wings and rain. ## Open questions - **Is the flood the catastrophe or the cure?** Roy's own gloss holds both, and the page keeps his doubleness rather than resolving it. - **Does the arc ever stage the thaw** — held water released back into the cycle, the [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|Loop]] melting into the Circle? (A toy, kept strictly as a toy: ice begins to flow again at exactly 33°F.) - **Is [[SOL]] the sun of this water** — the two engines of one cycle, the heat that lifts and the rain that returns? - **Is the endless re-scattering a sentence or a glory?** The traditions divide hard on this (the fork is laid out in [[Water — The Deep End]]): the return-as-rain read as bondage, or the flowing-out read as the shape of love itself. *"The circle will grow"* leans one way; *"I am the shore. I am not the wave"* declines the terms. The Vladimir Kush painting Roy captioned *"Egg,"* a sunrise cracking from a shell over open water, holds both halves in one frame. - **Where does *"Enter the water"* point** — baptism (death-and-rebirth by water; *"Love is a kind of death… surrender to be born again"*) or [[Concepts/The Aquarium|the Aquarium]]'s tank? Same door, opposite rooms. The 2026 feed's baptismal run (*enter the water → baptize → the shore → the rising waters → love is water*) suggests the rite; the era's staging keeps the tank in view. ## Source notes - **Grounded (Roy's own words, released music, public posts, public artifacts).** The four-element key (*"water being emotion"*) and the West placement (sourced on [[Fire]]); the dated 2026 posts, including *"Love is water"* (July 8, 2026, post ID 2074924634466857428, Wayback-verified); the Emoto citation (2021 Highwire interview) — with the pseudoscience flag kept attached; *"A single drop of rain can be the start of a flood"* (2020); the *Subject to Flooding* title-gloss (2018); the board's *"bottomless well"* line and the wheel's "Water" station; the teal staging; [[SOL]] released wordless, with *"Love. Love is a question"* as its one recovered line; *"We are drops of light"* (2023). - **Strong readings.** The three-registers split (flood / tank / cycle); cycle-as-Circle and tank-as-Loop; *"Love is water"* as SOL's answer; the two birds as the two water-relations; and the 2010-to-2026 shoreline arc, whose three statements are grounded while the figure joining them is this guide's. Grounded anchors, interpretive assembly, labeled as such. - **Provenance checked, July 2026.** *"I am the shore. I am not the wave"* returned no pre-2026 source in a targeted search across quote archives, poetry, lyrics and social platforms, so it is recorded as **apparently original phrasing, no source found**. The nearest attested structural antecedent is the ACT waves-on-the-shore visualisation, logged as inherited substrate rather than as a source. The Aleut etymology is logged as resonance and explicitly not as evidence of naming intent. - **Framework (named traditions, never authorial intent).** The whole comparative apparatus, with its verified translations and its misattribution guards, now lives one floor down in [[Water — The Deep End]]. Nothing in it is claimed as Roy's intent, and the honest limit is stated there: the traditions establish *"Love is water"* as a statable, long-standing position, and nothing more than that. - **Resonance.** The refraction reading and The Crow (1994) drawer — a physical figure and a reader's catalogued synchronicity, never source-claims. - **How we'd be wrong.** An aphorism is not a system: *"Love is water"* may be a beautiful mood and nothing more, and if the plain reading accounts for the post as well as this apparatus does, the apparatus is decorative. What keeps the page honest is that the element-key, the year of water-posts, and SOL's open question all *precede* the post. Held, not settled. None of this is the answer; it is one way of seeing it. > [!descend] Deeper > [[Water — The Deep End]] — the comparative floor: the older currents, the stage map, and the traditions that disagree. ## Read next - [[The Crow]] — the bird denied the cup; the other half of the Mercurius formula. - [[The Dove]] — the bird that reaches it; return as homecoming. - [[Subject to Flooding]] — the flood as diagnosis and cure, at album length. - [[Concepts/The Aquarium|The Aquarium]] — water held; the tank you can't see. - [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|The Loop and the Circle]] — the shape this element pours into. - [[SOL]] — the sun this water answers; love as the question and the element as the reply. - [[Brandon]] — the buried child, and the name-thread the water week surfaced. - [[Fire]] — the mind's element, and the source of Roy's element-key.
