The anchors are Roy naming the sword as his own, the 2025 desert photograph, and the year-long run of the crossed-swords emoji; the deeper sword-material is universal symbolism and one HoM artifact, held as such. Still thinner than the [[The Dove|dove]] or the [[The Crow|crow]], because none of it is yet a lyric. ## What it is Where the [[The Crow|crow]] is the mind's blade — cutting to *win,* to frame, to manipulate — the sword on Roy's side is the *heart's* blade: it cuts to **clarify.** Two jobs, both grounded in Roy's own gloss of the symbol: **discernment** (the sword that divides truth from the truth-shaped lie — exactly the danger [[Sir Lucius]] embodies, *"the truth that deceives"*) and **chosen action** (the moment the reaching stops and a decision is *made* — the clean cut of commitment). That second job matters in a catalogue where so much is reflection, deferral, and the endless hall of mirrors. The dove descends and the rose reveals, but neither one *decides.* The sword is the faculty that finally acts — that draws the line, makes the cut, and lives with it. It's discernment with an edge: knowing is not enough; you have to *choose.* ## Where it appears **Roy's own symbol-key.** The primary anchor: Roy assigns himself the sword — *discernment / chosen action* — as one of his fundamentals, opposite [[Sir Lucius]]'s intellect. On the simple starter-key it stands beside the dove and the heart. **The Flaming Sword (Hall of Mirrors).** A grounded blade *in the built world:* one unlocked HoM artifact is titled **"Flaming Sword,"** which in the Kabbalah names the **Lightning-Flash** — the zig-zag path the divine light takes descending the [[Kabbalah - The Tree of Life|Tree of Life]], sphere to sphere, from crown to kingdom. It's also the sword set east of Eden after the expulsion (Genesis 3:24), *"a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life"* — the same Eden the [[The Green Apple|green apple]] is plucked from. So the sword sits, in the mythology, at the *gate:* the blade that guards the way back, and the path the light comes down. (A different register from Roy's personal discernment-sword — related as *the decisive, dividing blade,* held distinct.) **The traditions behind it.** The sword of discernment is old and consistent: the archangel Michael's sword against the dragon; *"the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God"* (Ephesians 6:17); the tarot Suit of **Swords** (the mind, and the sharpness that can defend or wound). Roy's move is to keep the *discernment* and re-anchor it in the **heart** — the clean cut guided by feeling rather than by cold analysis. Which is the whole project in one gesture: not *no* blade, but the blade held by the right hand. > [!note]- Advanced reading — why it lands on the heart-pole, not the mind's > A sword is, on its face, a *mind* symbol — division, analysis, the cut (the tarot Swords are the suit of Air / intellect). So why does Roy hand it to himself, the heart, rather than to [[Sir Lucius]]? Because the project's whole thesis is that **discernment belongs to the heart, and the mind severed from it produces only clever cruelty.** Lucius has all the sharpness and none of the discernment — he cuts to *win,* not to *clarify* (*"a truth that can drag you to hell"*). The sword on Roy's side is the same edge *re-subordinated:* *"my mind must serve my heart."* The blade returned to the right hand is exactly the arc the catalogue is trying to complete — which is why the sword, thin as its grounding is, sits *rightly* with the dove and the heart rather than with the crow and the apple. > > And the tradition backs the placement from a second direction. Roy's sphere is **Netzach — Venus, and *Victory*** (Netzach literally *means* victory). Venus isn't only the soft goddess of love-poems: antiquity also worshipped **Venus Victrix** — *Venus the Victorious* — and, at Sparta, **Aphrodite Areia,** Aphrodite armed. And the [[The Dove|dove]], Roy's other bird, is *Venus's own animal.* So *"love that carries a blade"* isn't a paradox the project had to invent — it's a face the goddess already wore. The sword on the heart-pole is just Netzach's second name (victory) made visible: in this cosmology love is not defenseless, and the dove and the sword belong to the same hand. ## Source notes - **Grounded (Roy's own words, public artifacts).** That Roy names the sword — glossed as *discernment / chosen action* — as one of his own character-symbols. A *"dumbledore core"* video went up on his channel about an hour later. From February to July that year the crossed-swords emoji runs through his captions as the era's signature. So the sword is no longer only a name in a key: he has put it in his own hands, in public, at the head of the year the sword-era belongs to.
