So why does Roy hand it to himself, the heart, rather than to [[Sir Lucius]]? Because the project's whole thesis is that **discernment belongs to the heart, and the mind severed from it produces only clever cruelty.** Lucius has all the sharpness and none of the discernment — he cuts to *win,* not to *clarify* (*"a truth that can drag you to hell"*). The sword on Roy's side is the same edge *re-subordinated:* *"my mind must serve my heart."* The blade returned to the right hand is exactly the arc the catalogue is trying to complete — which is why the sword, thin as its grounding is, sits *rightly* with the dove and the heart rather than with the crow and the apple. > > And the tradition backs the placement from a second direction. Roy's sphere is **Netzach — Venus, and *Victory*** (Netzach literally *means* victory). Venus isn't only the soft goddess of love-poems: antiquity also worshipped **Venus Victrix** — *Venus the Victorious* — and, at Sparta, **Aphrodite Areia,** Aphrodite armed. And the [[The Dove|dove]], Roy's other bird, is *Venus's own animal.* So *"love that carries a blade"* isn't a paradox the project had to invent — it's a face the goddess already wore.
