# The Colors > **One-line reading.** Jagwar Twin is unusually disciplined about color. Roy's team wears white hearts. - **Black** — the bottom-and-shadow end. [[Sir Lucius]]'s team wears black hearts, and Lucius is dressed in black almost always. - **Gold-yellow** — the heart and the sun, the center of the ladder. - **Green** — the heart's living color (the [[The Green Apple|green apple]] is that color held in the wrong hand). - **Red** — the ringmaster's coat, a role rather than a person: whoever runs the show wears it. - **Teal** — the underground, the dream, the flooded place (the [[The Moon|moon]]-lit garage). ## The ladder underneath it all Everything starts on [[The I'm 33 Board]], where Roy draws a ten-rung ladder of color from matter at the bottom to spirit at the top. The bottom rung is dark and earthy, the top rung is pure white, and the heart sits in gold-yellow in the middle. That ladder is the dictionary the rest of the project keeps quoting: white for the crown, gold for the heart, black for the shadow. ## Two teams, one line down the middle The clearest use is the two hearts Roy posts: white hearts for Team Roy, black hearts for Team [[Sir Lucius]]. You can even see it worn on the body. In the interviews, both men wear nail polish that is black on one hand and white on the other. The split does not just divide the two of them, it runs through each of them. ## Red is a costume, not a person There is only one red coat, and both Roy and Lucius have worn it (Roy wore it to sing a Lucius song). A color that either of them can put on is not either one's color, it is the color of the job: running the show. When a room turns red in the story, someone is taking the stage over. ## Gold and teal, the two lights The live show is lit warm gold. The underground scenes, where Roy is brought down into the garage, are washed teal, the color of water and the [[The Moon|moon]]. Watch which light a scene is in and you usually know whether you are seeing the show or the dream. ## The rainbow, whole and broken On Roy's side the rainbow is whole: a halo, an arc, the full spectrum of a person. On Lucius's side the same rainbow comes back shattered, a little stained-glass mosaic sewn onto a black sweater.
