# The Banana
> **One-line reading.** The banana is the offering Sir Lucius lifts off the altar and turns into a microphone for his own voice — a sterile clone that carries real light and cannot pass it on.
## At a glance
- **What it does** — converts a sacred offering into a PA system for the self (the hijacked offering), and names a kind of light that transmits but can't seed (the sterile clone).
- **Carried by** — [[Sir Lucius]] (he lifts it, presses it, plays his hits off it); [[Mary]] (the concealed feminine whose altar it's taken from).
- **Appears in** — [[Bananas]] (the song that names it) · the *Roy vs Sir Lucius* theatrical series (EP1–EP4) · the [[Moths to the Flame]] → *Bananas* video seam · the *Bananas* single rollout.
- **Confidence** — the gag and the props are grounded fact (released video, Roy's own public posts, the botany); the altar-and-offering cosmology around it is strong interpretation, labeled as such.
## What it does
Start with the literal joke, because the joke is the whole tell: **Sir Lucius plays his hit singles off a piece of fruit.** In the theatrical *Roy vs Sir Lucius* series, he lifts a banana from the set's fruit bowl, presses it like a play button, and a chart-topper comes out of it. He does it twice on camera, which is what makes it a device and not a gag-of-the-week — a browning banana for *Not Your Homie* in EP2, another for [[Welcome to the Circus]] in EP3. A man cueing up his catalog off produce, deadpan, like it's a Walkman.
So the operation is, first, **substitution played for laughs**: the banana stands in for the instrument, the soul, the source. When Roy asks the one sincere question in the room — *"What happened to music that was created from the soul?"* — Lucius answers by pressing the fruit: *"The algorithm, baby."* The banana *is* the algorithm made physical. You don't make the song; you scavenge it off the table and press play.
But the same image runs a second, heavier operation depending on where it sits. Read against the altar it's lifted from, the banana becomes a **hijacked offering**. The fruit bowl isn't loose set-dressing — it sits on a small altar (more on that below), and the altar reads as a site of the concealed feminine, [[Mary]], the Mother. Lucius takes the gift meant for the sacred, turns it into a PA to broadcast *his own* voice, and sets it back as if untouched. The altar looks intact; inside, it's been quietly repurposed into a delivery system for him. The EP2 and EP3 banana-press scenes literalize exactly that — a sacred offering rerouted into self-broadcast, and yes, it is a man singing into a banana.
And the same image runs a *third* operation in the fruit itself: the banana is a **sterile clone**. The supermarket banana — the Cavendish — is one organism wearing millions of bodies: every plant a genetic copy, propagated only by human cutting, unable to reproduce by seed or vary, and now being wiped out worldwide by a single fungus precisely *because* they're all identical. That's plain botany, no esoterica required — and Roy glossed it himself, replying under the *Bananas* reel that *"most bananas are sterile and cannot reproduce by seed ;)"* ([[Public Posts]], IG 2026; the winking semicolon is part of the bit; he followed it with a tiger emoji). The sterile clone maps onto Lucius's [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|loop]] — recurrence without variation — and onto *City of Angels*'s *"everyone looks just like you."* The compact thesis: **real light in a sterile vessel — you can hear the song, you cannot inherit it.** Lucius leaks the genuine article and still can't pass it on cleanly.
One more move ties the fruit bowl together. Lucius **never takes the fruit at its right time.** The [[The Green Apple|green apple]] is bitten *early* — in EP4 (*"I'm your weirdness"*) — and stands for the premature mind. The banana is scavenged *late*, browning, and stands for the overripe id. Apple too soon, banana too late; both are the proper exchange the altar was built for, performed wrongly at both ends. And the song's own title names the energy: *"go bananas"* — go crazy, the comic and consumable thing you also slip on. Which is the last operation, and the one that keeps the whole symbol honest: **the banana is a banana peel under the conscience — funny until you realize the fall is the point.**
## Associations
- **[[Sir Lucius]]** — the one who lifts it, presses it, and plays his songs off it; the hijacker of the offering. The banana is his tell: a channel that transmits glamour and image but can't seed anything. (For the deep-framework version of "can't seed," see the Advanced reading on broken Yesod.)
- **[[Mary]]** — the altar's concealed feminine, the Mother / Shekhinah, whose offering is the thing taken. Her altar becomes his microphone. (Counter-read, kept honest: this leans entirely on the theatrical staging — a banana used as a mic is, at bottom, a gag. The props are real; *"the Mother's offering rerouted"* is an elaborate construction the song itself doesn't carry. Hold the fact firmly and the cosmology loosely.)
- **[[The Green Apple]]** — the altar's matched fruit and Lucius's decoded mark. Roy's own public decode (X, 2025): the green apple is *"knowledge that hasn't been earned; misuse of the mind; intelligence divorced from spirit; power access before spiritual maturity — fruit that is unripe. No wonder why Sir Lucius is always holding one."* Apple = premature mind (taken early); banana = overripe id (taken late). Same altar, two wrong timings.
- **[[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|The Loop]] / [[The Circle]]** — the sterile Cavendish *is* the loop: recurrence without variation, a copy that can't originate.
- **[[Concepts/The Empty Mirror]] / [[Letters of Creation|The Angels and the Angles]] / [[The Watchers]]** — the "hollow-emptiness" cluster (see Advanced reading): structure complete, breath gone.
> [!note]- The fruit-bowl altar (the full staging)
> The recurring set is an underground parking garage with a small table that functions as an **altar**: a bowl of fruit (green apples and bananas), two red candles in white holders, an Egyptian statue tucked underneath, Tree-of-Life motifs running up the columns, and a moon-like set light hung over each shoulder. EP1 (the series opener) establishes all of it. Lucius presides in an Anonymous-Club bunny/Lambchop hat and white goth-clown makeup, almost always smoking, with the Hebrew *El Roi* (אל ראי — *"the God who sees me,"* Genesis 16) tattooed on his neck. The banana is one item on that altar; the apple is its pair; everything around them — candles, statue, pillars — is what licenses the "offering" reading in the first place. (One open thread: the [[Moths to the Flame]] candelabra later shows up with one red candle where the altar had two — possibly the split-off or absent Roy, possibly nothing.)
## Appears in
- **[[Bananas]]** — *Lucius Lullaby* (2026), **track 7** (2:22), written by Roy English and Ryan Spraker (Spraker also co-wrote *Great Time to Be Human*). The song that names the symbol; album neighbors *[[Moths to the Flame]]* (6) → *Bananas* (7) → *[[No. 1 Champion (la Conquistadora)]]* (8). The chant — *"Go Bananas, GoGo Bananas"* / *"Go, go banananana"* — is the title made into a hook. (For what the *song* actually does to the listener, see the Advanced reading on the id-permission chant.)
- **EP2, "The Rise of sir lucius."** ([[The Interview]]) Lucius grabs a **browning** banana, presses it, and plays *Not Your Homie*. Roy: *"It doesn't mean anything."* Lucius: *"Exactly. It's nonsense. It's all nonsense."* — the on-camera anchor for the whole "nonsense" motif.
- **EP3, "welcome to the circus."** ([[The Interview]]) Same move, fresh banana: he presses play on [[Welcome to the Circus]]. Roy: *"What happened to music that was created from the soul?"* Lucius: *"The algorithm, baby."*
- **EP4, "The Spoon (weirdness)."** The paired [[The Green Apple|green apple]] is bitten *early* — the timing counterpart to the late, browning banana.
- **The *Bananas* video / [[Moths to the Flame]] seam.** *Moths* (track 6, spoken-word, Lucius vocal) runs seamlessly into *Bananas*: the camera pulls back from his candelabra speech to reveal him standing atop a roughly **10-foot pile of bananas** as the song begins. The official *Bananas* reel adds the companion sight gag — Roy in a red embroidered jacket and white face paint, **submerged in a pool of bananas** in greenish water, *"Go, go banananana"* on screen. The reel's caption, signed Roy: *"Nowhere is not a destination but you can arrive in an instant."*
- **The single rollout.** *Bananas* was a featured release — a **Times Square billboard** (*"Jagwar Twin & sir lucius — bananas"*) plus a YouTube Music push (Roy, X, April). The marquee treats *"bananas"* as an event.
- **Live.** Part of the stable *Live Underground* setlist for the BMRC underground-garage shows (alongside *Welcome to the Circus*, *Bounce*, and *Lucius Lullaby*). The events' existence is public; the rooms themselves are not.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the id-permission chant (what *Bananas* the song does)
> *Bananas* is Lucius weaponizing **childish permission**. The whole track is a children's-entertainer voice licensing animal regression, and it moves in clean stages:
> - **Invitation** — *"Hey kids! Do you ever wanna break shit? Do you wanna get wasted?"* The cradle-rocker addressing the nursery.
> - **Animalization** — *"Just the monkeys feeling funky, I got nowhere to go."* The human collapsed into the primate; appetite running the body while consciousness lags behind.
> - **Moral split** — *"I wanna be Good, but it's fun to be Bad"* — the kindergarten fracture of [[Concepts/Duality]], capitalized, stripped to its crudest form.
> - **Dissociation** — *"I hear voices in my mind I don't remember / Did I do that?"* — the self split from the part that acts. (Integration would say *yes, that was me*; Lucius stops at the shrug and keeps the party going. The *"Did I do that?"* may be a buried Steve Urkel echo — childhood TV recoded into a moral alibi — pending an audio confirm.)
> The pressure-release is *"It's the weekend and I'm freaking, like I'm ready to blow… I wanna light up the stove. And burn it down."* The id blows because the energy is **sealed in** — *ready to blow, nowhere to go.* This is the Pied Piper, not the confessor: the entertainer who teaches the nursery to torch the house. (Roy's reel caption reframes the same word against him: Lucius's *trapped* nowhere — dead-end — versus Roy's *transcendent* nowhere — *"you can arrive in an instant"* — the same syllable as doorway.)
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the suppression-bomb thread (a 2018→2026 throughline)
> *Bananas*' *"ready to blow… nowhere to go"* is the third point on a catalogue-spanning thread where **suppression pressurizes into detonation**: *Loser* (2018) plants the bomb under *"sunshine in my mind"*; [[Happy Face]] (2020) plants it under the forced smile (and supplies the same domestic **stove** — *"flip the switch, flip the stove,"* now turned to ignition); *Bananas* (2026) is the bomb finally going off, the id-eruption that the earlier songs only sat on. The arc has its own logic too: [[Happy Face]] → [[Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)|Bad Feeling]] → *Bananas* → [[Welcome to the Circus]] — suppression, candy-factory consumption, eruption, spectacle.
## Related traditions
The image is dense because it's standing on several real traditions at once, named here so the page doesn't pretend they're invented:
- **The offering to a hidden divine feminine.** The Mother / the **Shekhinah** of Kabbalah, whose gift is meant to pass *upward* and is instead rerouted. This is what the hijacked-offering reading draws on.
- **Genesis 3 / the Fall.** The altar's paired fruit. The apple (Lucius's mark) is the forbidden fruit of premature knowledge; the banana is its overripe, late counterpart — both wrong-timed grasps at the same exchange. (Roy has tagged *Lucius Lullaby* "Genesis 3.")
- **Modern agriculture as a ready-made image.** The Cavendish and the fungus **TR4**: identical clones that look perfectly healthy and cannot reproduce, an actual present-day crisis used as the sterile-copy emblem. This one needs no esoteric grounding at all — it's in the news.
- **The Eucharist, inverted.** Communion is *eat-and-become-one*; Lucius systematically replaces it with *self-broadcast* — the elements stolen and pressed like buttons to amplify himself rather than received to become one. (The full "black Mass" synthesis is in the Advanced reading below.)
- **Gurdjieff (the Fourth Way).** The in-between creature — *"man is no longer a wild animal, but he has not yet become a human being"* — which Roy posts publicly. *"Go bananas"* / the funky monkey is regression *below* the labor of becoming human. ([[Moths to the Flame]] inverts the same Gurdjieff line into a creed: *"the wild animals are wiser… follow your instincts."*)
- **Jungian shadow.** *"Did I do that?"* as shadow-possession — the self refusing to claim the part that acted.
- **Slapstick / vaudeville.** The banana peel you slip on; the comic-consumable object whose *fall* is the point; the Pied Piper as the corrupted children's entertainer.
- **Nursery-rhyme forms turned sinister.** *"Go Bananas"* and *"Hey kids"* as playground chants — kin to the ring-around-the-rosie of *Not Your Homie* and the Oompa-Loompa interpolation of *Bad Feeling*; the album's "twisted adolescent musical themes" running through the fruit.
- **Hermetic / Tree-of-Life iconography.** The set's pillars and Egyptian altar — the esoteric frame the fruit bowl literally sits inside.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — broken Yesod and the broken vessel (the Kabbalistic frame)
> Two related Kabbalistic readings sharpen *why* a sterile fruit is the right emblem for Lucius — held as framework correspondence, **not** as Roy's stated method (his Kabbalah engagement is public and real; there's no public source of him naming Kabbalah *as his system*, so don't present these as "his framework").
>
> **Broken Yesod.** On the Tree of Life, **Yesod** is the Foundation — the reflective image-sphere, the "Treasure House of Images," the realm of glamour. It's Lucius's operating theater (he works *through* Yesod; his placement is Hod / Mercury (the intellect) + Geburah, with a demoted morning-star / Venus resonance held apart from Roy's Netzach/Venus). The banana is the **tell of a broken Yesod**: generativity replaced by image, a channel that transmits glamour but **cannot seed**.
>
> **Broken vessel (Shevirat ha-Kelim).** In Lurianic Kabbalah, the *Breaking of the Vessels* leaves husks (*kelim* / shells) that hold form but can't contain the generative flow. The sterile banana is exactly that — a **broken *kli***: a husk that keeps its shape, severed from what would let it seed. (This is also the clean rebuttal to any "the banana isn't really a symbol" verdict — the vessel reading is fully load-bearing.) Both file alongside the project's broader chalice / grail / [[Concepts/The House and the Vessel|container]] imagery.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the desecrated Mass (the synthesis)
> Pull the hijacked-offering and broken-vessel readings together with the altar staging and you get the strongest single frame: the EP set is a **staged altar** (fruit + two red candles + Egyptian statue + Tree-of-Life pillars), and Lucius's ritual across the episodes is a **black Mass**. He never *receives* the offering rightly — never takes the bread, never takes the fruit at its right time. He **steals** the elements and presses them like buttons to amplify himself. Communion (eat-and-become-one) is systematically replaced by self-broadcast. This extends the [[Mary]]-altar reading and [[Concepts/The Mouth]]'s anti-Eucharist into one operation — and it folds the *Communion vs Spectacle* logic in too: *Bananas*' id-permission chant is a **commanded, harvested echo**, the crowd echoing destruction back instead of being fed.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — "all angle, no angel" (the hollow-emptiness pole)
> The sterile banana is the **hollow-emptiness** pole of the system: structure complete, breath/spirit gone. It clusters with [[The Watchers]]' *"I'm afraid I'm a clone"* (the first-person of the sterile clone), the [[Concepts/The Empty Mirror]] tattoo (*"seeing nothing"*), the Eye-of-Horus 63/64 that always misses the missing 1/64, and the counterfeit *"structure without spirit"* of [[Letters of Creation|The Angels and the Angles]]. A clone is *all angle, no angel* — a body without the *Ruach*, the breath, that would let it **originate** rather than **repeat**. The same emptiness closes the album: [[No. 1 Champion (la Conquistadora)|#1 Champion]] ends with Lucius chanting *"number one champion"* a cappella into a dying room after the music stops — *structure with nothing left to structure*, the Cavendish loop made into an ending.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the "I"-engine and the Trojan-horse handoff
> Two craft notes on how the song carries all this. **Pronoun mechanics:** *Bananas* runs a heavy first-person *"I"-engine* (its "I"-to-"you" ratio is lopsided toward self-assertion) — branding and self-broadcast at the level of grammar, part of the *Lucius Lullaby* performance machine. **Method:** the public, citable name for what's happening in the *"nonsense"* handoff is Roy's own term **"Trojan Horse music"** — a sing-along, mantra-style chorus carrying dark content under a candy melody. *Bananas* is Trojan-horse by design: *"Go bananas"* is the sweetest possible wrapper for *"break shit… burn it down."*
## Source notes
- **Grounded (released video, Roy's own public posts, public botany).** Lucius pressing a banana to play *Not Your Homie* (EP2) and *Welcome to the Circus* (EP3); the EP2 *"It's nonsense"* and EP3 *"the algorithm, baby"* lines; the fruit-bowl altar staging (candles, Egyptian statue, Tree-of-Life pillars, *El Roi* neck tattoo); *Bananas* as *Lucius Lullaby* track 7 (2:22), written by Roy English and Ryan Spraker; the lyric (Apple/Shazam plus in-hand verified); Roy's *"most bananas are sterile and cannot reproduce by seed ;)"* reel comment; the signed *"Nowhere is not a destination"* caption; the *Moths*→*Bananas* camera pull-back to the banana pile and the pool-of-bananas reel image; the Times Square billboard and YouTube Music rollout; the *Live Underground* setlist slot; Roy's green-apple decode and his public Gurdjieff post; the Cavendish/TR4 botany (independently verifiable).
- **Strong readings.** The hijacked offering (altar = concealed feminine, banana = rerouted gift); the sterile-clone-as-loop thesis (*"real light in a sterile vessel"*); the wrong-timed-fruit pairing with the green apple; the id-permission chant's staged collapse; the suppression-bomb thread; *"a banana peel under the conscience."* All built on grounded anchors, but interpretive — read them as readings.
- **Framework (esoteric, syncretic — never authorial intent).** Broken Yesod; the broken vessel / Shevirat ha-Kelim; the desecrated-Mass synthesis; the Shekhinah identification of the altar's feminine; the "all angle, no angel" hollow-emptiness cluster. Licensed by Roy's open Kabbalah and Genesis-3 engagement, but the work never states them as method.
- **How we'd be wrong.** If *Bananas* is primarily cathartic, Wonka-adjacent zaniness, then the stacked apparatus (id-permission + hijacked offering + sterile loop + shadow-dissociation) over-reads a winking joke — and Roy's gnomic *"nowhere"* caption supports many readings, his own included. A related caution: if *every* enclosure in the catalogue (box, banana, mirror, house, egg) slots neatly into a broken-vessel role, the system stops predicting anything — so note the containers it *can't* classify rather than forcing the fit.
