# Mozart
> **One-line reading.** Mozart is two things at once in this world: a composer Roy actually reaches for, and, through the film *Amadeus*, the cleanest mirror the outside world has ever made of the Roy-and-Lucius split.
Most of the names in this folder are esoteric ones, the thinkers Roy shelves and quotes. Mozart is the odd one out, a working composer, and he earns a page for a reason the others don't share: the story the culture tells about him happens to be the exact story this catalogue keeps telling about itself.
Start with the grounded part, because it's smaller and stranger than the reading it invites. Roy names Mozart directly. He's called him a dream collaborator, drawn less to the tunes than to the engineering: *"I would go to Mozart, the way he does his math… It's geometric"* (Atwood, 2022) — which is Roy's own thesis about music, that number and melody are one thing, handed back to him by the one composer everyone agrees was doing arithmetic in his sleep. On the *"I'm 33"* board a hand-drawn music staff works through *"what is music?"* and lands, deadpan, on *"Happy birthday to you / to Mozart / the greatest Song ever written: HBD."* And in [[Soul Is A Star]], Mozart is one name in the roll call of the descending soul, *"Jesus, Mozart… all of us,"* the genius filed not as a hero but as one more soul that came down into matter and got lost.
Then, in March 2026, the tell. Roy tweeted *"Slow down Mozart,"* and the next day *"Mozart's not your homie"* alongside a [[Sir Lucius]] GIF. That second post is the whole reason this page can say anything at all past "named influence": it is the **one place Roy himself sets Mozart beside the shadow.** Everything below leans on that single thread, and nowhere else.
## At a glance
- **In one line** — the composer Roy admires for his *math*, and the subject of the one film that dramatizes a divided genius better than anything else in the culture.
- **Where he sits in the guide** — a foot in two rooms. As a named musical influence he belongs beside the [[Musical Lineage|musical lineage]]; as the *Amadeus* lens he opens a door onto the [[Sir Lucius]] / [[Roy]] split and the [[The Divided Self|divided-self]] material in the Deep End.
- **The receipt** — Roy on the record: the Atwood *"geometric"* line (2022), the board's *"to Mozart / HBD"* staff, the *"Slow down Mozart"* and *"Mozart's not your homie"* + Lucius posts (March 2026), and Mozart's name in the *Soul Is A Star* list.
- **The warning label** — one tweet is the only place Roy links Mozart to Lucius. The *Amadeus* reading below is the guide reading a very old shape onto a divided self Roy built, not a code Roy planted.
## What Roy actually reaches for
Roy's Mozart is the **geometer**, not the powdered wig. *"The way he does his math… it's geometric"* slots Mozart straight into the board's governing idea, the one it keeps circling on [[Concepts/The Pattern]]: that number, music, and the shape of a soul are the same computation seen from different angles. Mozart is the name Roy hangs on *music as math done perfectly*, which is why he shows up on a spreadsheet about uploading a consciousness, sketched onto a staff beside the question *"When was I Born?"*
There's a Masonic footnote worth a sentence and no more. Roy played *Bad Feeling* live at the **Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever** in 2024, and Mozart was himself a Freemason, with *The Magic Flute* his Masonic opera (the Queen of the Night, the trials, the ordeal of light and dark). It's the connective tissue under the catalogue's scattered Masonic touches, held exactly as loosely as that sentence holds it.
## The *Amadeus* door
Here is the reason Mozart gets his own page rather than a line in a list.
Peter Shaffer's *Amadeus* — the 1984 film — is not really about Mozart. It's about **Salieri**, the devout, hardworking court composer who is good enough to recognize genius and not good enough to possess it, watching God pour perfect music through a vulgar, giggling boy who never seems to work for any of it. Salieri's devotion curdles into something that helps kill the thing it worships. And that shape, the favored gift and the craftsman who would rather destroy it than serve it, is Sir Lucius and Roy drawn by someone who never heard a Jagwar Twin song.
The film has a name in the older tradition: scholars read it as a retelling of **Cain and Abel** (Gregory Robbins, *Journal of Religion & Film*, 1997) — the offering God regards and the offering God refuses, the brother-artist destroyed instead of embraced. That matters here because Cain and Abel is already the guide's name for the *un-reconciled* version of the Roy/Lucius question (see [[Concepts/Jacob and Esau]], where the embrace is the hopeful ending and Cain's mark is the dark one). So *Amadeus* reads as the culture's cleanest picture of the ending the catalogue is most afraid of: the shadow winning, the gift destroyed, no embrace.
And it lands, uncannily, exactly where the map already sits. Salieri is the laborer, the craftsman, the mind that measures — which is Lucius's whole register (the intellect, the analysis, the truth divorced from heart). Mozart is the effortless gift, the music simply *received* — which is Roy's (the heart, the vessel). On the Tree of Life the guide reads through [[Kabbalah - The Tree of Life]], the two even fall on the correct sides, and *why* the story ends in a killing instead of a reconciliation turns out to be a matter of geometry. The full version of that lives in [[The Divided Self]] and the Kabbalah page's deeper reading; this page just opens the door.
## The warning label
The honest size of all this: **Roy has never named *Amadeus*, Salieri, or Cain.** The single grounded link is *"Mozart's not your homie"* under a Lucius GIF, which tells you Roy sees *some* Mozart-shaped thing in the shadow, and tells you nothing about which one. Everything past that is the guide holding an old story up next to the work and finding that the light passes through, the same way it does with Jung, with Fight Club, with Jacob and Esau. It is a reading, offered because it illuminates, and it stays a reading. Nobody here is claiming Roy scored his catalogue to *Amadeus*.
Hold it the way the guide holds every framework (see [[Source and Interpretation Policy]] and [[Concepts/Inherited Substrate]]): a story that rhymes with the work is not a story the work is quoting.
## Source notes
- **Grounded — Roy's own words and posts.** The Atwood *"the way he does his math… geometric"* line (2022); the *"I'm 33"* board's *"Happy birthday to you / to Mozart / the greatest Song ever written: HBD"* staff; the *"Slow down Mozart"* and *"Mozart's not your homie"* + Sir Lucius posts (March 2026); Mozart's name in the [[Soul Is A Star]] descending-soul list; *Bad Feeling* performed at the Masonic Lodge, Hollywood Forever (2024).
- **Reading.** *Amadeus* as the outside world's cleanest dramatization of the Roy/Lucius split (Salieri the craftsman-envy, Mozart the received gift); the film as a Cain/Abel retelling (Robbins, 1997) and therefore a picture of the *un-reconciled* prognosis; the two composers landing on the mercy/severity pillars where the guide already seats Roy and Lucius. Held as a reading built on a single grounded thread, not a citation.
- **Tradition.** Mozart the Freemason and *The Magic Flute* as a Masonic opera; the Lurianic and tarot machinery the Tree-of-Life reading runs on — named as inherited symbol, never as a working key to any song.
