# Joni and the Descending Star
> **One-line reading.** Joni Mitchell is not an influence Roy name-drops. She is the verse before his, in a song that keeps coming down, getting found, and lifting the one who sent it. The whole point of this page is the cycle, and the cycle is the good part.
The Joni thread is one of the most grounded and most moving things in the catalogue, and the reason it matters isn't trivia or lineage-flattery. It's a shape: a soul comes down as a song, tries to make it out, and is carried home by whoever hears it next. Joni fell into that song in 1970. Roy is the one who heard it. That isn't borrowing so much as the mechanism the record describes, running in real life — sitting on Spotify, which is an extremely undramatic place for a miracle to keep an office.
## At a glance
- **In one line** — a confirmed collaboration (Joni co-wrote and blessed a song on *33*) that turns out to be the clearest working model of the project's central engine: the descending soul, the failed and the successful transmission, the loop that becomes a circle by being carried.
- **Where it shows up** — [[Soul Is A Star]] (the anchor: Joni's co-write, the blessing, the *Woodstock* weld, the genes/jeans lock) · [[Down to You]] (the album's second Joni dialogue) · [[SOL]] (where the grounding deliberately stops).
- **Connected ideas** — [[Concepts/Inherited Substrate]] · [[The Thread]] · [[The Circle]] · [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle]] · [[Concepts/The Voice]] · [[Concepts/The Empty Mirror]] · [[Sir Lucius]] · [[Mary]] · [[Concepts/Duality]].
- **Confidence** — a firm grounded floor (the co-write and the blessing, both in Roy's own words), a strong interpretive body (the *Woodstock* weld, the genes/jeans echo, the cycle reading), and one genuinely open question at the top — whether Joni's actual voice is on the track — that the page names rather than leans on.
## The song comes down
Start with the title. *Soul Is A Star.* Stars fall. The bridge tells you what the falling is: *"we fall down as seeds on the ground,"* sung four times, so the descent is also a planting. A star comes down, lands as a seed, becomes a verse, and tries to grow back toward the light it came from. That's one soul's whole arc, compressed into an image, and the song runs it more than once.
Each verse is a star trying to get out. The son in verse one *"wrote songs you never heard"* — a transmission that failed, a light that went out before it landed. He *"took his life, he gave it up, before Prophets ever turned"* — an exit, not a return. The girl in verse two *"wanted Love but she got Fame and Power from the Thieves"* — a soul the machine caught on the way down. Two ways of falling that don't make it back: one unheard, one captured.
And then the turn, which is the reason this page exists. The song itself descends, gets *discovered* by the next one who can hear it, and the act of carrying it back lifts the one who sent it. That isn't a metaphor imported from somewhere — it's what the collaboration literally is. Joni's verse (*Woodstock*, 1970) fell and, unlike the son's, stayed audible for half a century. Roy found it, welded his song to it, asked for and received her blessing, and put her name in the credits. Carrying Joni lifts Joni. Each artist is a verse. The song is bigger than any single singer, and it isn't finished, because Roy is writing his verse right now.
That last part is the tender floor under all the cleverness, and it's in Roy's own hand. He has said this song shook his confidence when his label dropped him — that maybe he shook his own confidence — and that he loves what he makes now even without outside validation, because *"I know it's special."* A song that "failed to transmit," in his phrase, recognized from the inside by the one who made it. That recognition-from-within is the exact move the whole concept is about: the light was never lost, only latent, waiting to be called back by name. It's the wound the wit orbits.
## The song is the proof
Here the project's own grammar does the heavy lifting, so this isn't a frame imported from outside — it's the one already installed.
A [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|loop]] repeats without arriving. A **circle** returns, transformed, and grows from the inside. The doctrine is that love turns the loop into the circle. *Soul Is A Star* stages both. The son and the girl are loops that terminated: one exited, one got optimized into product (see [[Concepts/The Circus#What it produces (the Spectacle)|the Spectacle]]). Joni's line refused both — it kept transmitting. When Roy carries it forward with love rather than extraction — a blessing asked, not a sample cleared and forgotten — the loop becomes a circle. The fallen star is lifted by being received. That's return rather than orbit, transmission working instead of failing.
And the album agrees with itself out loud. *Soul Is A Star* sits at track 5, the literal midpoint, and asks the record's governing question: *"do you know who you are?"* [[The Circle]] at track 10 answers it: the inside of the inside is where you go. You don't have to graft the cycle onto this song — it's the spine of the record the song lives on.
One honest note on the machinery. The escape-language (*get out, make it out, gave it up*) has a Gnostic charge — the soul trying to leave the world. The lift-language (*comes down, is carried, returns*) is closer to a Lurianic repair — the fallen light gathered and raised rather than abandoned. Those are different destinations, and the song doesn't resolve them. It holds both: the son escapes and is gone, the transmission returns and is lifted. The duality isn't a bug in the reading; it's the engine. Roy, for his part, doesn't describe any of it as escape. He says *Soul Is A Star* is one of his two live favorites, and that singing it he feels *"connected to everyone and to god."* Connection, not exit — the repair reading is the one he keeps confirming with his body onstage.
## The lock: genes and jeans
The connection to Joni doesn't rest on one line, and the line it rests hardest on isn't the obvious one — it's the genes/jeans hinge. Verse two's girl carries *"a bullet in her genes."* Joni, in *The Boho Dance*, sang of *"the cleaner's press… in my jeans."* That isn't a shared cliché or a string any two writers might reach for; it reads as a transformed lift of a hyper-specific, almost private image, homophone intact, from a song Joni *co-wrote here*. By the project's own principle — that recurrence is the cheapest evidence and transformation on an uncopyable source is the dearest — that's the strongest class of anchor there is. And the girl who *"wanted Love but got Fame"* is speaking pure Joni fame-machine lexicon (the Thieves, the buying and selling) inside a song with Joni's name on the writing credit.
So the tiering is clean, and for once generous. The co-write and blessing are grounded. The deliberate-Joni-dialogue reading — anchored by genes/jeans, the fame-machine vocabulary, and the *Woodstock* weld below — is about as strong as an interpretation travels before it's simply fact. The one clean step left is confirming the *Boho Dance* line against a Joni primary source, which would strengthen the claim rather than doubt it.
## The weld to Woodstock
The specific Joni song behind the credit is *"Woodstock"* (*Ladies of the Canyon*, 1970), and once you know that, *Soul Is A Star* reads as a careful weld to it — two writers building one inheritance. The cleanest way to see it is side by side. All the lines below exist on both sides; that they rhyme is the reading.
- **A meeting with a stranger.** Joni: *"came upon a child of God."* Roy: *"I met a man who had a son."*
- **The identity question.** Joni: *"I don't know who I am."* Roy: *"do you know who you are?"*
- **Stardust into star.** Joni: *"we are stardust."* Roy: *"your soul is a star."*
- **Garden into seeds.** Joni: *"back to the garden."* Roy: *"we fall down as seeds on the ground."* She supplies the destination, he supplies the *fall*.
- **The bargain.** Joni: *"caught in the devil's bargain."* Roy: *"gave it up before Prophets ever turned"* — the profits/Prophets homophone landing squarely on Joni's own fame-bargain note.
Two details worth banking. First, *"caught in the devil's bargain"* is Joni's own published *Woodstock* lyric, not a Crosby-Stills alteration — so Roy's "devil's bargain" register borrows from *her*, not from a cover. Second, the borrowing is never a quotation: Roy nowhere reproduces *"we are stardust, we are golden."* The credit tells us something of Joni's is in the song, and given the un-verbatim relationship, the borrowed element is most plausibly musical or melodic. Whether her literal voice is in the recording is a separate, open question with real weight (see below).
## Where it appears
**[[Soul Is A Star]]** is the center of everything: *33* (2022), track 5 of 10, 3:17. Writers: Roy English, Joni Mitchell, Matt Pauling. Roy has said it plainly: *"JONI MITCHELL gave me her blessing and is a cowriter."* The title itself he sources to the Egyptian Book of the Dead — *"behold, thy soul is a living star."* This is the grounded home of the co-write, the blessing, the *Woodstock* weld, the genes/jeans lock, and the question at the record's heart. Everything on this page ultimately rests here.
**[[Down to You]]** is *33*'s second Joni dialogue, and a stronger candidate than "coincidence" allows. Joni has her own *"Down to You"* (*Court and Spark*, 1974, sole writer), the resolving hook *"it all comes down to you"* is shared verbatim, and both songs are duality texts (Joni: *"you're a kind person, you're a cold person too"*; Roy: heart over head). Because *33* already grounds Joni next door on *Soul Is A Star*, this reads as the album reaching for her a second time. Held honestly: Roy's track carries no Joni writing credit and the phrase is idiomatic English, so it stays a strong reading rather than a settled fact.
**[[SOL]]** is where the grounding stops on purpose. *Lucius Lullaby* (2026), the wordless closer. No credit, no caption, no melodic match makes SOL Joni-grounded, and influence doesn't bleed forward. SOL and *Soul Is A Star* clearly rhyme as ideas — both are a transmission surviving partial loss — and reading SOL as "the Joni-borrowed breath surfacing beneath all the verses" is a lovely thought, offered as one reading, never as grounding. Joni is a *33* phenomenon; on *Lucius Lullaby* she survives only as this bridge.
**The childhood floor.** Per the Masquerade Atlanta venue bio, Roy grew up on Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, whom his mother played around the house. In his own Discord he has named Joni among his listening and acknowledged a fan's Joni reference. The influence is neither invented nor recent.
## What this isn't, and why that's the fun
We are not crowning anyone. The word *"Prophets"* appears once, in one line, in one song, and this page lets it be a word, not a throne. There's no credit, caption, lyric, or statement in which Roy names himself a prophet, an heir, or the next link in a sacred line, and building that thesis on a single lyric would be the project's own worst failure mode — treating the artist as a guru. Roy doesn't carry himself like a man collecting a crown.
And there's a cheerful irony in it: the artist Roy is borrowing from is the one who most refused to be the subject of her own songs. Joni said her songs were *"a mirror of human nature,"* meant so the listener sees themself, *"not Joni doing something."* That's this project's [[Concepts/The Empty Mirror|Empty Mirror]] doctrine, stated decades early by a confirmed influence — and the cleanest argument against any coronation: you can't inherit a throne from someone who spent her career declining to sit on one.
One guardrail, said warmly. The co-write makes Joni a confirmed *influence*. It doesn't make every overlap in the catalogue travel through her. The girl in *Soul Is A Star* is not Joni. The album-wide *33*-to-*Ladies of the Canyon* dialogue is a strong reading, and *"33 named because of Joni's thirty-third floor"* stays a guess. Keeping those honest isn't hedging — it's what lets the strong claims stay strong.
## Deeper in
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the girl in verse two is carrying Joni
> Verse two hides Joni inside it without flatly naming her, and every crumb is anchored. Joni co-wrote the song — the credit-level fact that licenses the rest. The Witness who *"came upon the child of God"* in 1969 is literally her *Woodstock*. The girl's *"bullet in her genes"* echoes Joni's *"cleaner's press… in my jeans"* (*The Boho Dance*), the genes/jeans hinge. She *"wanted Love but got Fame and Power from the Thieves"* — pure Joni fame-machine lexicon (the *"star maker machinery,"* the thieves who *"buy and sell,"* across *For the Roses*, *Free Man in Paris*, *The Boho Dance*). And Joni is the childhood voice the mother played around the house.
>
> The verse's *"dark father"* (*"papa was a sinner playing God behind the scenes"*) reads as the star-maker, the industry patriarch — compare Joni's Geffen portrait in *Free Man in Paris* — not anyone's literal father, which keeps the whole reading non-defamatory: it maps the music-industry myth Joni lived, nothing about a real dad. Her *For Free* even maps by inversion: the busker who plays *"real good, for free"* and goes unheard is the soul that *refused* the bargain, lining up with the son (*"songs you never heard"*). The girl is the soul that *took* it. Two halves of one inheritance — the one who wouldn't sell and the one who did.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — is Joni's actual voice on the record?
> This is the most beautiful reading available, and it's honest enough to stand on one unconfirmed fact: is Joni's actual voice on the recording? The current position is *open* — the borrowing is non-verbatim and most likely musical or melodic, and the actual-voice claim (traced to Hall of Mirrors / idobi materials not yet pinned) is unverified.
>
> *If* Roy used Joni's real voice for some non-lyrical part, the cycle stops being a metaphor and becomes a thing that happened. A song that failed to transmit — the son's *"songs you never heard"* — healed by one that succeeded, *Woodstock*, audible for fifty years. Joni becomes the Witness who *"came upon the child of God"* in 1969, placed bodily inside the later song, still singing: the fallen star lifted, and the lifting recorded, the whole doctrine leaking quietly into reality. The honest caveat is the one that makes it worth trusting: the co-write is the only hard floor. If the borrowing is purely melodic, this stays a lovely idea rather than a proof.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — Joni's own esoteric shelf
> Part of why the Joni thread carries weight is that aligning with her isn't aligning with a pop reference. She is a self-avowedly Jungian artist (synchronicity, the four-faculty Medicine Wheel), reads Nietzsche (her *"maker of individuals"* sits beside Roy's *Zarathustra* camel), called herself a *"Buddhist-Gnostic hybrid"* (*"God is within"*), and said she was *"interested in the prophets of all religions, but the religions themselves don't make any sense to me."* That last line — the closest grounded tie between Joni and the literal word *prophet* — is about *her*, not Roy. The substrate Roy draws from already runs on the same Jung / Hermetic / Gnostic furniture the rest of the catalogue does. The shelves match, which is exactly why the inheritance reads as real rather than decorative. See [[Carl Jung]], [[Concepts/The Sacred Truths/Gnosticism - The World as Trap]].
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the mother as the first channel
> The "song handed down" doctrine has a biographical floor in Roy's mother, on two public anchors: a 2018 Atwood interview (she *"listened to pretty much only weird world music"*) and the Masquerade bio (*"Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan… his mom played around the house"*). The inherited-substrate method literally originates in her records. Two things stay distinct: the biographical mother is a *channel*, where [[Mary]] is a symbolic *function* — the two shouldn't be collapsed — and there's a separate note that Roy's *dad* sent him *Woodstock*, his favorite Joni song, so the dad-*Woodstock* thread stays its own thing rather than merging into the mom-played-them bio.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the album-wide dialogue with *Ladies of the Canyon*
> Beyond *Soul Is A Star*, *Ladies of the Canyon* (1970) keeps surfacing as substrate — the lines existing on both sides while only the *intent* of any single mapping stays speculative. *"The Circle Game"* (*"captive on the carousel of time"*) sits against [[The Circle]] — the same image, opposite charge: the carousel that traps versus the circle that grows. *"The Arrangement"* (*"thirty-third floor… more than a consumer"*) sits against the album titled *33* and its consumerism critique; whether Roy titled the album *because* of Joni's thirty-third floor is the one real leap, and it stays a guess. A pervasive father motif across *Ladies* rhymes with the song's *"dark father."* And on Roy's own cosmology board the lyric is laid out as *"who had a Sun… my Sun was a singer,"* spelling SUN where the release reads *Son* — a Sun/Son homophone that coheres with the board's *"sun = externalized Life Force."* An artifact detail; the released word is *Son*, and the page keeps it.
## Connections
- **[[Soul Is A Star]]** — the grounded anchor: the co-write, the blessing, the *Woodstock* weld, the genes/jeans lock, the question at the center. The whole concept rests here.
- **[[The Circle]]** — answers the *"do you know who you are"* question *Soul Is A Star* poses, and is the shape the whole cycle resolves into. Joni's *"Circle Game"* sits adjacent in the substrate.
- **[[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle]]** — the doctrine the cycle reading runs on: the loop that terminated (son, girl) versus the transmission carried home (Joni, lifted).
- **[[Concepts/The Voice]]** — the transmission cluster the song performs inside: light moving through channels, failing in the son, succeeding in Joni.
- **[[Concepts/Inherited Substrate]]** — lists Joni as credited substrate alongside Mercer, Chaplin, Rockwell, Vaughan.
- **[[The Thread]]** — ties to Joni's own phrase, *"a mystical thread that runs through my life."*
- **[[Concepts/The Empty Mirror]]** — Joni's own doctrine (*"a mirror of human nature… not Joni doing something"*), and the reason the heir frame doesn't hold.
- **[[Down to You]]** — the second Joni dialogue on *33*.
- **[[SOL]]** — the firewall where the grounding stops.
- **[[Sir Lucius]]** — borrows only the *function* of a performing alter-ego, the mask worn as armor; the connection is to the mechanism, nothing more.
- **[[Mary]]** — shares the divine-feminine register, held distinct from the biographical mother-as-channel above.
- **[[Concepts/Duality]]** — runs through it all: son and girl, escape and return, the one who wouldn't sell and the one who did.
## Source notes
- **Grounded — Roy's own words, released music, public posts.** Joni's co-write on *Soul Is A Star* (with Roy English and Matt Pauling); Roy's stated blessing (*"JONI MITCHELL gave me her blessing and is a cowriter"*); the Egyptian Book of the Dead as the title's source, Roy-stated; the released lyrics quoted here (*"songs you never heard,"* *"before Prophets ever turned,"* *"got Fame and Power from the Thieves,"* *"bullet in her genes,"* *"we fall down as seeds on the ground,"* *"do you know who you are"*); *Woodstock* as the specific Joni song, with *"caught in the devil's bargain"* as Joni's own published line; Roy naming *Soul Is A Star* a live favorite and feeling *"connected to everyone and to god"*; the board artifacts (the Sun/Son layout, the label-dropped note, the "dad sent me Woodstock" note); the Masquerade childhood bio. Joni's *"prophets of all religions,"* *"mystical thread,"* and *"mirror of human nature"* are her own public statements.
- **Strong readings.** The descending-star cycle as the song's engine; the *Woodstock* weld and parallel inventory; the girl-carries-Joni breadcrumbs (genes/jeans, the Thieves and *For Free* maps, the industry-patriarch read of the "dark father"); the transmission and loop-to-circle thesis; the album-wide *33*-to-*Ladies of the Canyon* dialogue; *Down to You* as the second Joni dialogue.
- **Open questions.** Whether Joni's *actual voice* is on the recording (the "enacted repair" reading depends on it; the Hall of Mirrors / idobi source is unpinned); the *Boho Dance* line pending confirmation against a Joni primary source; whether *33* is named for the thirty-third floor.
- **What this page does not claim.** Roy consciously positioning himself as a prophet or heir in the Joni line — there's no credit, caption, lyric, or statement that names it, and the artist he draws from refused to be the subject of her own songs. The reductive press tag "a millennial Joni Mitchell" is reframed here as a real, chosen lineage of *method*, not a self-coronation.
