# Witnessing vs Surveillance
> [!gist] They know my every step, they infiltrate my brain
> But it's okay.
>
> There are two ways of being seen, and the Jagwar Twin world treats the gap between them as a spiritual fault line. One gaze recognizes you and hands something back; you leave more yourself than you arrived. That is witnessing. The other watches, ranks, predicts, and quietly shapes you so your behavior stays legible and sellable. That is surveillance. Same eye, opposite verdict. The working test fits on a bumper sticker: surveillance gathers data; witnessing transforms the witnessed. Or sharper still: the algorithm does not know you, it knows how to shape you.
>
> The distinction is a load-bearing beam, the fault line the [[Machine vs Human]] thread turns on, and it sorts the cast into two poles: [[Sir Lucius]] and his apparatus (the Audience, the Algorithm, the Spectacle, [[The Aquarium]]) on the watching side, El Roi and [[Mary]] on the witnessing side. One honest caveat up front: the songs stage the surveillance and its dread far more often than they stage the gaze that restores. The witnessing answer is reached toward, not yet depicted, and that gap is the concept's live edge.
**Where it enters**
* The Hebrew אל ראי (El Roi, "the God who sees me") is inked on [[Sir Lucius]]'s throat, visible in the video stills, while the [[Not Your Homie]] lyric insists *"you don't know me."*
* [[Online]] (2022, on *33*) names it outright, *"they know my every step / they infiltrate my brain,"* wrapped in a grinning consumer earworm.
* The *Online* browser gate asks you to enable your camera, then cover the lens with your finger ("turn off the lights") to proceed. Be watched, then blind the watcher.
That is the surface, and it stands on its own. The drawers go one reading deeper at a time.
---
> [!lore]- The God who sees me
> The witnessing pole has a scriptural anchor, and it is public scripture: Genesis 16:13, where Hagar, seen in the wilderness at her lowest, gives God the name *El Roi*, "the God who sees me." The mirror is already inside the scene: as she names him, she says she has now seen the one who sees her. The gaze that finds her does not gather data on her. It changes her. That is the whole doctrine in one verse: witnessing transforms the witnessed.
>
> And the work stakes a public claim on the name. Roy signs himself **"El Roy,"** on the *#1 Champion* visualizer caption and in other public posts, taking up the seeing position as a signature. Then the same name, in Hebrew, turns up inked on the throat of the character built out of watching. What that irony does is its own drawer, below.
> [!reading]- The purest surveillance song
> [[The Watchers]] (2024) interpolates Rockwell's 1984 "Somebody's Watching Me" (credited in the song's own paperwork) and twists the paranoia one notch further into clone-fear: *"I'm afraid I'm a clone,"* over a refrain that keeps gasping *"wake up."* The clone is the exact *output* of surveillance, a self shaped into a copy instead of witnessed into itself, and it is sung by the figure whose name (*El Roi*) promises the opposite gaze.
>
> The keeper line, a strong read rather than a receipt: **"The Watchers is the moment the Hall of Mirrors grows eyes,"** reflection escalating into surveillance. The full borrowed-throat story, and why the interpolation is the deepest thing about the song, lives in the Deep End.
> [!reading]- A spoonful of sugar sedates the surveillance
> [[Online]] is funny on purpose. Roy's public framing of the song is *"so fun and so ridiculous"* (Ones to Watch, 2022), and that is load-bearing: the form wraps *"they infiltrate my brain"* in an earworm so pleasant you never notice it is about being colonized. **The song is the mechanism it describes.** It is hiding your dog's medicine in steak, only here the steak is hiding a surveillance report. The public *Online* artifact carries the core image straight: *"Internet is like a web and we're the Spider's food."*
>
> Then the browser experience turns the doctrine into a rite you perform on yourself: the "Darkness_site" gate declares *"THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING YOU BEHIND YOUR SCREEN,"* asks you to enable your camera, then to cover the lens with your finger to pass through. Both modes in one gesture: submit to being watched, then withdraw yourself from the watcher to proceed. The companion page, *pay-attention.jagwartwin.com*, deadpans the whole upload premise as satire, a failed influencer uploading his consciousness so a digital version can work the feed 24/7. By Roy's public account the surveillance-and-upload cosmology began as a joke with the dev team, which is exactly why it lands. Half solemn, half prank.
> [!mask]- The watcher who cannot witness
> [[Sir Lucius]] fuses both poles in one body: *El Roi* inked on the throat, *"you don't know me"* in the mouth. The name of true seeing worn on the very organ that insists no one sees him. **The machine that watches everything cannot witness anyone.** And the apparatus confesses itself: [[Welcome to the Circus]] stages the audience as the show's product (*"did you like the show?"*), and in the theatrical [[The Interview]] series (EP3) Lucius names the force behind it in three words, *"the algorithm, baby."* That is the story's canon, not autobiography.
>
> One reading goes deeper, and it is held as one way of seeing it: the eye is not the villain. Seeing is the *contested faculty*. With the heart in it, seeing becomes witnessing (Mary). Severed from the heart, it can only watch (Lucius). On this reading the Protector grew the eye in the first place: the child who was not seen ([[Brandon|Ballerina Boy]]) built an internal watcher to do the seeing no one did for him, and a watcher cut off from the heart can only ever watch. One eye, split by the heart.
>
> The fork is why this page is a species of [[Source vs Reflection]] (does the reflection return you to the source, or trap you in the image?) and why it has siblings down the scales: [[Communion vs Spectacle]] at the social scale, [[Flattened Identity]] as the gaze felt as compression, [[The Speaker Problem]] as the same mirror made grammar.
> [!warning]- Not every gaze fits the grid
> Scope guards, because a clean binary invites lazy sorting. Not all observation is surveillance: a camera can document harm, protect someone, hold power to account. And not all witnessing is benevolent: a witness can misread you, possess you, romanticize you, or watch you drown without moving. The axis runs through relation, power, consent, and purpose, not the mere presence of a gaze. Real witnessing also has to tolerate what it cannot fully know; it sees without claiming total possession, which is precisely the claim the profiling gaze cannot help making.
>
> And the watcher can move indoors. Self-surveillance, the metric-aware self performing for an imagined judge with no camera in the room, may be the most complete version of the machine. One line worth keeping beside the binary: surveillance gathers a person into a system; witnessing remains present long enough for the person to remain a person.
> [!reading]- Born to shine, rarely sung
> If surveillance is the gaze that shapes, the candidate for the gaze that restores is [[Mary]]. On [[No. 1 Champion (la Conquistadora)]] she is named and faceless in one breath, *"Saw a halo but I didn't see a head,"* a witnessing presence that returns no surface to rank and nothing to consume. The blessing-voice on *Weirdness*, *"you were born to shine"* (the *Ballerina Boy* outro), is recognition that transforms rather than ranks. A strong read holds her as the one frequency the consuming eye cannot absorb.
>
> But notice what the catalogue mostly does *not* voice. The songs stage the dread (the clone, the copy) far more than the redemption. A being-seen that hands you back to yourself, a double that returns you to the source instead of replacing you, is the shape the work reaches toward more than it depicts. Hold it as approached, never as achieved.
> [!question]- Left open on purpose
> **Does Mary model true witnessing as the antidote**, seen-and-loved against watched-and-ranked? Held as a question, not a verdict. **Is Lucius's instability around spectatorship because he half-knows** that surveillance is not witnessing? **Should El Roi be promoted to its own page**, or stay housed here and on the character pages? **Where do the mixed cases sit**, the internal watcher, the benevolent camera, the possessive witness, without the central binary going soft? And the live edge itself: **does the work ever intend to stage the redemptive gaze**, or is reaching toward it the point?
> [!descend] The Deep End
> The heavier apparatus behind this page, the Hebrew letter-work, the Tree-of-Life register, the Eye of Horus and its missing sixty-fourth, the full Rockwell backstory, the ink, the doppelganger, and the watcher bookshelf from Debord to the Grigori, lives in [[Witnessing vs Surveillance — The Deep End]]. Dense and speculative by design. The page you are on stands without it.
> [!receipts]- Sources and confidence
> Grounded in public material: Genesis 16:13 (public scripture); the אל ראי ink on Lucius's throat (visible in video stills); the "El Roy" signature (public posts and captions); the lyric content of *Online*, *The Watchers* (with its credited Rockwell interpolation), *Not Your Homie*, *Pay Attention*, and *Welcome to the Circus*; *"the algorithm, baby"* (the theatrical Interview series); the *Online* and *pay-attention* browser experiences and their on-screen text; Mary named and faceless in *#1 Champion*.
>
> Strong readings, interpretive in the joining: the witnessing/surveillance split itself and its test; the two-pole sorting of the cast; the throat irony; one eye split by the heart; "the Hall of Mirrors grows eyes"; *Online*-as-sedation.
>
> Framework: everything in the Deep End, attributed to its traditions and held loosely.
>
> The usual brake: the redemptive half of this page is a direction, not an event; the released work voices the dread far more than the rescue, and this guide keeps that gap visible. None of this is the answer; it is one way of seeing it.
