# The Loop and the Circle > [!gist] The circle will grow from the inside of the inside > But the inside of the inside must be where you go. > > The Circle is Roy's name for a shape of return: no beginning and no end, the thing you are looking for already inside you, recovered by remembering it rather than going out to acquire it. He calls its song "Jagwar Twin's Genesis story," and nearly every other idea in the catalogue either serves the Circle or inverts it. The Loop is that same circular shape gone wrong: a closed track you walk forever, ending up exactly where you started, with no one new having made the trip. Surviving, not living. This guide traces a large part of the project as the work of turning one into the other. > > Both are circles. Both spin. You cannot tell them apart by shape, only by what happens to you on the way around. The lore stages the way out in two steps, a choice ("the loop ends the moment you choose it") and then service ("my mind must serve my heart"), but the record has not shown the conversion finished. The ending is still open. **Where it enters** * [[The Circle]], the closer of *33* (2022): a feminine maker with "a world tied on a string" teaches the Jagwars to sing, "new kings" persuade them they never could, she hides the song "inside their wings, on the inside of the inside," and at last a wise one "remembered she once held the string." Roy names it the front door: "The Circle is Jagwar Twin's Genesis story." * [[LOOP]], the 2025 single, names the trap in plain speech, "I keep ending up back at you / On this carousel, I'm going round and around," and Roy ran the campaign to match on X: "If you're ready to break the LOOP leave a ∞." * The word *Loop* itself is Lucius's, spoken in the theatrical series as a diagnosis turned sales pitch: "you're in a loop and you don't even realize it." Lucius speaking is not Roy speaking. That is the surface, and it stands on its own. Open a drawer below only for the deeper rooms. --- > [!map]- No beginning, no end (he keeps saying so) > The Circle is not late scaffolding. Roy named it as a worldview at his first press cycle, in 2019, talking about [[Move To You]]: "There is no beginning and no end it's just a circle." That is three years before the keystone song, so *33*'s "The Circle" formalizes a frame already in use. The fuller two-timeline story, the Circle from 2019 and the Lucius line from 2008 converging on 2026, waits in the Deep End. > > He restates it in every register. On the feed: "You're always in the middle of a circle" (2022), "Music is how the world remembers who it is," "Every maze has a center." In the Manifesto FAQ, the doctrine's spine: "The world needs music, but the world doesn't need more songs. There's only one song. I'm still learning how to write it." And "you are it" has been a standing slogan since at least the 2021 *Down to You* microsite, resurfacing as a 2025 ARG password; it traces to Alan Watts, an influence Roy names himself. > > The vocabulary even runs the fandom. On the public Discord, "the Circle" is the working name of the owned community: "the circle will grow," "circles never end ❤️," "only the circle knows about the circle" (pure fan-club-bouncer energy, gatekeeping a secret society whose secret is that it is a secret society). Song refrain, lore, and fan society, one continuous vocabulary. More of the feed lives at [[Roy's Posts — Canon Index]]. > [!reading]- Felt, not counted > Roy locates the Circle in live, present-tense moments, the crowd returning the song to the singer; the sing-back gesture recurs across the public record. Ask Lucius what happened to music created from the soul and he answers, "The algorithm, baby." Side by side, that pairing is this guide's diagnostic model, and it describes what each pole tends toward, not a taxonomy Roy defined: > > | | The Circle tends toward | The Loop tends toward | > |---|---|---| > | Mode | embodied, communal, present-tense | private, repetition-compulsion | > | Measure | remembrance, the song returned | streams, reach, metrics | > | Direction | grows outward from the inside | closed, going nowhere | > | Voiced by | Roy | Lucius | > > The sharpest test this guide has found, offered once as its own synthesis: **a Loop repeats in place while concealing its repetition; a Circle repeats with awareness, relationship, and the possibility of return.** That test matters because the work itself repeats on purpose, refrains, mantras, circular album structures, and none of it reads as trapped. The clearest four-line statement of the whole split is a Hall of Mirrors poem in which a rabbit ends "back where he begun" but is changed by the passage. The Loop's nightmare version is the return where "everyone looks just like you" ([[City of Angels]]): return with the self deleted, different paint jobs on the same soul. The Circle's version is return with the self transformed. > > Two cautions travel with the model. A crowd singing back is not automatically communion; the same gesture can be restorative, imitative, coerced, or spectacular, and the mode of relation is what decides ([[Communion vs Spectacle]]). And from inside a Loop the curve reads as a line, a road going somewhere, which is exactly the con: it feels like progress because you cannot see the bend. > [!props]- The snake eating itself: the Loop with a mouth on it > The catalogue's sharpest picture of the Loop is not a carousel. It is a snake eating its own tail, and Roy engages the old symbol three separate ways. > > It is **on him**: an ouroboros among the forearm tattoos, which he glosses as "a circle with arrows, like the snake eating itself but simpler." It sits in the same cluster as **WAKE UP**, the Gurdjieff line, which puts the trap and its antidote on the same arm. It is **in his mouth**: talking with Paris Berelc on his *Mirror Sessions* podcast, he works from "life begets life begets life" out to everything at once, "we're all eating each other… it's like that ouroboros snake, we're just eating everything," and lands on "we're eating ourselves, that's what it is." And it is **on the board**, in the aphorism cells of [[The I'm 33 Board]]: "Man devours God, God devours Man. One Life feeding another end of its Self." That last clause is an ouroboros written out. > > Why it belongs on the Loop side rather than the Circle's: the difference between the two shapes on this page is a center, somewhere to travel toward, "the inside of the inside." An ouroboros has none. It is all circumference, a ring that stays a ring by consuming its own body, and that is the same picture the Circus paints when it chews you up and spits you out, only with nowhere left to spit. Which makes [[Consumption]] less a neighbouring idea than the Loop's engine: what keeps it turning is that it is feeding on itself. Mechanism and shape, drawn once. > > Two honest limits. Roy never uses the word *loop* about the ouroboros; the imagery is his, the diagnosis is this guide's. And his register in that conversation is not accusation at all, it is oneness, everything folded into one self-feeding thing, said with something like wonder. Which is the whole premise restated: the same ring can be heard as communion or as trap, and from the inside you cannot always tell which one you are walking. > > You can hear the Circle's present-tense register even in throwaway moments. Asked his favorite fruit in a 2024 interview, Roy refuses to generalize: "raspberries. Just plain raspberries, today, at this moment, at 11:18 PST. But organic raspberries only." Truth is what is true right now, in this body, on this timestamp. > [!reading]- One shape, every scale > The same circular geometry runs at every magnification at once, which is the clearest way to feel how the ideas braid. Couple-scale: [[Move To You]], "It moves to me, I move to you," two centers in mutual motion. Song-scale: [[Another Way II Heaven]], "One, become Two," the same division the Loop-era spine opens with ("The One was divided"). Cosmic scale: the Jagwar myth itself, the song taught, silenced, and remembered. One geometry, many magnifications. > > And Loop-versus-Circle is itself one case of the master frame [[Source vs Reflection]]: does a reflection return you to the source, or trap you in the image? The same question generates [[Machine vs Human]] and [[Witnessing vs Surveillance]]; pull one string here and the whole web moves. This page keeps its own knot all the same: the shape of return, and what the trip does to the traveler. > [!mask]- The same circle, walked the wrong way > [[Sir Lucius]] keeps the form intact and reverses the vector, the operation this guide calls [[Inversion]], and it reads as running catalogue-wide. Where the Circle says "the inside of the inside must be where you go," [[Welcome to the Circus]] says "there's no exit sign in my maze." [[Not Your Homie]] takes the most communal circle-game there is, ring-around-the-rosie, "I'm ringing rosies, my pocket's full of posies," and walks it as a plague-march, "ashes, ashes, we all fall down": the hand-in-hand ring turned contagion. And in the theatrical series Lucius defines Roy's loop as a tidy chart-shaped circuit, Loser → Move To You → Happy Face, the shadow's diagnosis deployed as a sales pitch by a figure written as a failed hype-man running an MLM for spiritual stagnation. The horror under the comedy: every catastrophe he causes streams extremely well. > > Then the album-level version. *Lucius Lullaby* (2026) opens on a track titled *The Circle* that contains none of the original's words: a wind-up music-box loop carrying one line, "It's a beautiful life, it's a beautiful life, I'm dreaming," which belongs to the next track. The substituted lyric and the mechanical repetition are on the record; hearing it as a counterfeit Circle, the keystone's name wrapped around a lullaby's words, is this guide's interpretation, unpacked in the Deep End. > > The theatrics stay funny on purpose: Lucius cues his hits by pressing a browning banana from the fruit bowl like a button, the algorithm operating via rotting fruit. (A marked speculation, no more: a banana is a sterile clone and the green apple beside it carries seed, which would make the bowl the Loop's emblem in produce, return without seed. Nothing establishes the props were chosen to say that.) > [!reading]- "No one wants this love stuff" > The Loop has a limit-case, and it has a name: [[SOL]], the Song of Love. In the theatrical series it is the one transmission Lucius can bury but cannot metabolize. He cuts Roy off mid-verse, "Love. Love is a question. Everyone's guessing. Everyone knows," with "STOP!!! No one wants this love stuff," and substitutes a banana-button hit instead. Then at the listening-party finale, when SOL finally plays, he grows agitated, has Roy taken away, and sits alone with the song until it ends, unsettled. > > The reading: SOL is the open-secret song, "everyone's guessing, everyone knows," and it is the seam where the usurpation shows. The Loop can keep it off the radio; it cannot turn it into a metric. And notice he does not rage. He sits with it, which reads at least two ways, suppression failing, or grief, or something old being remembered. Held loosely, off the staging alone, and held open: survival, not triumph. > [!reading]- The buried irony > The Circle is first named, in 2019, while Roy is talking about [[Move To You]], the most vulnerable song on *Subject to Flooding*, written from the floor of "I felt like I was never going to make it." And in the theatrical material, *Move To You* is the exact song Lucius singles out to bury: "does anyone remember Move To You?", a crow cawing for comic timing, the shadow adding his own sound effects to inter the ballad. The catalogue's deepest worldview is anchored to the one song the shadow designates as dead weight. The cosmology's origin point is the song the mind keeps trying to throw away. > [!lore]- An embrace, not a funeral > The Loop-era lore, in its own theatrical voice, runs the arc like this: "In the beginning there was the One. The One was divided" → "a shadow awoke. And the shadow was Sir Lucius" → Lucius builds "his own Dark Circle within The Circle and the loop continued" → "My mind must serve my heart, Roy repeated… as he stepped through the gate" → "The loop ends the moment you choose it" → "With infinity powering eternity, Roy fought to escape the LOOP as the rose bloomed." > > The load-bearing detail is the verb. The resolution named is service, not destruction: the mind is not put to death, it is put back in its right place behind the heart, the two held in right relation. An embrace, not a funeral. And it is a two-step: the choice opens the exit, and love walks through it. (The Kybalion, one of the traditions Roy engages, names a similar move Neutralization, the loop de-participated rather than defeated; a framework lens, taken up in the Deep End.) > > Say the state of play plainly: the lore declares this resolution, the songs stage its mechanism, and the record has not shown it done. Promised and modeled, not achieved. > [!question]- Still open at the center > Does the arc actually resolve, the Loop converted to the Circle and the mind re-seated under the heart, or does it end with Lucius still the final boss? That is the project's central unresolved question, and this page will not pick for you. > > Smaller doors, still open: does "the inside of the inside" lead to [[The Aquarium]]'s center, the most trapped point, or to its breach, the exit? Same phrase, opposite valence, possibly undecided on purpose. Is "The Realm" a distinct concept or another name for the owned Circle community? In [[Welcome to the Circus]], is Lucius protecting Roy or training him to rule the Circus? And one piece of housekeeping: the exact wording of one 2019 sentence about the crowd singing it back is still pending a clean full-text; the sing-back signature stands on the wider record either way. > [!descend] The Deep End > The heavier apparatus, the two converging timelines, the feminine figures who hold the string, Babel against Pentecost, the dervish's still center, the full anatomy of the counterfeit opener, the Kabbalistic and Platonic rhymes, lives one floor down, dense on purpose: [[The Loop and the Circle — The Deep End]]. The page you are on stands without it. > [!receipts]- Sources and confidence > Grounded in public language and released music: the 2019 naming ("There is no beginning and no end it's just a circle," Digital Journal, on Move To You); the song The Circle, written solo by Roy, and its lyrics; "The Circle is Jagwar Twin's Genesis story" (2024 interview); LOOP and the break-the-LOOP campaign on X; the Manifesto FAQ's "There's only one song"; "You're always in the middle of a circle"; the public Discord's use of "the Circle" as the community's name; the raspberries answer (2024 interview). Theatrical canon, cited as the figure's lines within the story and never as Roy's belief: "you're in a loop and you don't even realize it," "The algorithm, baby," the SOL scenes, and the Loop-era narrative spine, including "my mind must serve my heart." > > Strong readings, labeled where they stand: Loop as return without transformation and Circle as return with memory restored (this guide's synthesis); felt-versus-measured as the guide's diagnostic model; the catalogue-wide inversion reading; the counterfeit hearing of the album opener; SOL as the limit of the usurpation. The ouroboros belongs here too: the tattoo and its gloss, the Mirror Sessions exchange, and the board aphorism are all on the public record, but Roy never calls it a loop, and placing it on the Loop side of this page's own split is the guide's reading. (One housekeeping note on that tattoo: the sources agree on the ink and its gloss but not its placement, forearm in the body inventory against abdomen in one older list, so it is described here without a location.) > > Framework, attributed to its traditions and held loosely, lives mostly in the Deep End. If any of this starts sounding certain, distrust it a little: certainty is a tone, not a truth. None of it is the answer; it is one way of seeing it. > [!feed]- Read next > [[The Circle]] · [[LOOP]] · [[Sir Lucius]] · [[Source vs Reflection]] · [[The Circus]] · [[The Thread]] · [[Consumption]]
