# The Jaguar > [!gist] Long ago, there was a Jagwar with a world tied on a string > And she made other Jagwars, then taught them to sing. > > Roy has explained the name the same way for the better part of a decade: the jaguar is "the creature who looks into the souls of other people and then, in turn, can look back into itself," because "humans are just mirrors for each other." *Jagwar* is the seer and the mirror; *Twin* is the paired self, the light and the dark, observer and observed folded into one name. The rare artist-name origin that is the master key, not the trivia answer. > > The jaguar is not a cast member. This guide treats it as the field the whole story happens inside: the seeing that [[Roy]], [[Sir Lucius]], and [[Mary]] all take place within. Inside that field the seeing forks into two modes, surveillance and witnessing, and in the founding myth the creature turns out to sing as much as it sees. **Where it enters** * Roy's etymology, told across roughly five public interviews (2018 to 2024): the jaguar "looks into the souls of other people and then, in turn, can look back into itself." * [[The Circle]] (*33*, 2022), the founding myth: "Long ago, there was a Jagwar with a world tied on a string / And she made other Jagwars, then taught them to sing." * The deliberate spelling: *Jagwar* with a **w**, not *Jaguar* — marking it a made name rather than the animal in the zoo, and the namesake of the myth's created creatures. Roy explains the jaguar and the Twin publicly; the reason for the altered spelling he has left unsaid. That is the surface, and it stands on its own. The earliest and fullest telling is the Ones to Watch Q&A (2018): the jaguar looks into others and back into itself; "humans are just mirrors for each other, so when you really look at somebody… you really understand yourself." Atwood (2018) carries the turn behind it: "I felt like I was given new eyes." New England Sounds (2019) flips the order, self first, then others, and keeps the meaning; the sequence changes, the reciprocity never does, and the reciprocity is the doctrine. Mic Magazine (~2024) adds the redemptive turn: the jaguar "looks into the darkness of itself and others but then is able to pull people out of that into the light." > > Roy roots the choice in a story from Mayan mythology, framed as coming out of a real spiritual turn before the debut: "I'm really big into Mayan mythology and all sorts of mythology from every different culture… so I was like, the jaguar, that's what it needs to be." > > The *Twin* half he grounds too, and it means duality: "the dual nature — the light and the dark, the yin and the yang — that everybody has." Then, deadpan, the co-sign from the birth chart: "It also plays into the fact that I'm a Gemini, so I have the twin thing." > > There is a tell that the origin story became the thesis: the Highwire profile (2021) recites it back at him, "a creature who looks within others as within itself. A mirror of consciousness." That last phrase is the journalist's, not a Roy verbatim, which is exactly what makes it useful. When the write-ups start reciting your etymology at you, it has stopped being trivia. > > And the cat steps out of the name into pictures: Roy signs "El Roy 🪄🐆," the jaguar glyph set against Lucius's green apple 🍏; a stylized jaguar figure appears on the 2026 *Bounce* manifesto card; his personal Instagram wears a panther avatar, and his X profile opens with 🐆 and "There's two sides to every story." One 2026 post even lets the creature act: "Jagwar will always throw off the wrong rider 🐎." Read straight, a real claim: the mirror cannot be ridden by the false self. > [!lore]- One cat, five currents > The emblem holds several traditions at once, without strain, as long as each stays labeled. The Mayan rooting is Roy's telling, a story he attributes, not a scholarly claim about Maya tradition. The Egyptian register arrives on the I'm 33 board, which carries the Book of the Dead's Spell 17: the Great Cat of Ra slaying the chaos-serpent Apophis at the foot of the sacred tree. Set beside the mirror-jaguar and the cat holds two jobs, looking into souls and holding the line of solar order; the board is public, and reading the JT jaguar as Ra's cat is this guide's enrichment, a complement to the mirror, never a replacement. In the Kabbalistic reading, "Jagwar Twin" can be heard as the name of the [[Heart and Mind|heart-and-mind]] pair itself, Roy's heart facing Lucius's mind, the two-that-are-one; and the Circle's feminine Maker keeps company with Sophia and the Shekhinah, a family resemblance, not an equation. The Gemini is astrology, co-signed by Roy himself. > > Two guards. The serpent will not sit still: on the same board the snake seems to wear two faces, the chaos-thing Ra's cat cuts and, elsewhere, the ascending serpent climbing toward knowledge, so even the emblem's enemy may be doubled, tempter and awakener at once. Hold that lightly. And do not over-sweeten the animal: jaguars are predators and royal emblems, and night vision can mean protection, hunting, or danger. The benevolent-guide reading is real, and it is not the whole cat. > [!reading]- The cat sings, too > The etymology centers seeing, but the jaguar's defining act in the released music is not looking at all. It is singing. In [[The Circle]], the closing track of *33* and the founding myth of the whole project, the primordial Jagwar is a maker and a teacher of the song. > > Run the myth in the order the song runs it. The loss comes first, and it is not theft, it is persuasion: across "many cycles," "the new kings told Jagwars they never could sing." Nobody steals the song; the Jagwars are talked out of believing they ever had it. Then the rescue, hanging on the word "So": "So the maker of the Jagwars hid the song inside their wings, on the inside of the inside, then left them to sing." Only after that do "the empires built cages and sold everything." And recovery, when it comes, is not a war won. It is a remembering: a wise one who "found a small cave" and "remembered she once held the string." Forgetting by being convinced; recovery by recollection. Read that way, the manifesto's "there's only one song" can be heard as the jaguar's song, the thing the maker taught, hid, and left to be remembered. Any reading that shrinks the jaguar to a watching eye has dropped half the creature. > [!mask]- Same eye, opposite hearts > Inside the field the seeing forks, and the fork is the project's moral universe. [[Sir Lucius]] is surveillance: counterfeit seeing, extraction and ranking, the eye that watches everything and witnesses no one. [[Mary]] is witnessing: recognition that restores, seen-and-loved against his watched-and-ranked. This guide's working model is that they are the same faculty, the same eye plus or minus the heart, which is why the jaguar's seeing is never neutral. The field is morally loaded the moment somebody looks through it. > > The contested organ is inked where you can see it: Lucius wears El Roi, "the God who sees me," tattooed on his throat, the very throat he uses to insist "you don't know me." More than a joke at his expense: El Roi is the faculty the two modes are fighting over, and in Genesis the same name lands the other way, Hagar naming the God who finds her: "I have now seen the one who sees me." Same faculty, opposite outcome. The character pages are [[Jagwar Twin]] (the container), [[Roy]], [[Sir Lucius]], and [[Mary]]; the jaguar is the seeing those four take place inside. The work invites a tidy over-reading here and then declines it: it is tempting to force a one-beast-per-figure scheme, a neat symbolic zoo with the jaguar slotted in as the last animal, and the work does not support that geometry. The jaguar is the condition of the others, not their peer. > > Held that way, the emblem states the project's master-frame as a creature instead of a concept: [[Source vs Reflection]], a reflection that returns you to the source rather than trapping you in the image. > [!reading]- The we in the mirror > The mirror runs at every magnification, and at the smallest one you can count it: across 45 core songs the two most-loaded words are "I" (492) and "you" (478), neck and neck. The reciprocal mirror is welded into the grammar. One scale up, Roy ties it to a collective register from the start, "Jagwar Twin is a collective consciousness and I wanted people to feel that from the first listen" (2018), later paired with a Rudolf Steiner line about the whole community finding its reflection "in the mirror of each soul." And at the largest scale he keeps quoting the world-as-mirror: Alan Watts, "All that you see out in front of you is how you feel inside your head." Same doctrine, three magnifications; the jaguar-link at the outer scales is this guide's reading. > > The inversion even ran through the biography before the myth existed: when "Roy English" first surfaced in 2015 he was credited everywhere and pictured nowhere, a "mystery man" in the press, seen-but-unseen at the very moment of being named. The seer/seen inversion the project later mythologizes was already true in the career facts. > [!note]- The cat has a sense of humor > A mirror of consciousness sounds solemn, and the comedy lives right up against the cosmology on purpose. Asked, in effect, to explain itself, the project once offered, under its own name, "I like the sexual nature of ice cream," and let it sit there. The 2026 *Great Time to Be Human* visualizer arms its apocalypse out of the kitchen drawer: Lucius shoulders a "PROPERTY OF B.M.R.C." rocket launcher, a spoon gets brandished as a scepter, a gong is struck with a kitchen utensil on "what a great time to be human." And in conversation with Bohnes, "House of mirrors. That's probably the name of, like, a Goosebumps book" gets the flat correction: "Not to be confused with the Hall of Mirrors — which is the Jagwar Twin metaverse." None of it dilutes the seeing. The same faculty that looks into the darkness of itself and others can also notice a spoon is funny, and a mirror that can only be solemn is not a very honest mirror. > [!question]- Held open on purpose > How does the jaguar relate to [[Mary]], the feminine source-figure and rightful seer? Two readings sit on the table. Reading A: the jaguar is a genderless seeing-field, distinct in kind from Mary, who sees rightly inside it. Reading B: seer and seen are one function with two faces. The myth leans toward B, both the maker and the wise one of [[The Circle]] are "she," a maker-mother, but Roy has not equated the two by name in public, so the lean stays a lean, not a verdict. Certainty is a tone, not a truth. > > Who or what is the wise one: a specific recurring character, a role, an awakened Jagwar, the maker remembered through a descendant, all of us remembering, or several at once? Open. > > One drawn jaguar stays unplaced: a white, feminine jaguar carrying an ankh, the sign of life. Where she belongs is genuinely open, and placing her would prejudge the Mary question. > > Two other glosses circulate, worth keeping sorted from the core: a bio-framing that the jaguar "possessed mythical powers to see into all living beings" and travels between worlds, and a label-bio "speed of the jaguar… moving through technological and cultural dynamics." Neither appears in any of Roy's tellings.
