# The Loop and the Circle — The Deep End
> [!gist] The lower floor
> This is the companion to [[The Loop and the Circle]], which stands entirely on its own; this page is dense by design. Down here live the converging timelines, the feminine thread, the scriptural and esoteric rhymes, the dervish, and the full anatomy of the counterfeit opener. Framework material is attributed to its traditions throughout, never to stated method, and each lens is tied to the one feature it actually illuminates. If any of it starts sounding certain, it is doing it wrong.
> [!lore]- The Long Way Round (two timelines, one year)
> Two of the project's principal forces have slow-emergence timelines that converge on 2026, and tracing them settles whether the mythology was retrofitted. The Circle is named in 2019, becomes the keystone song on *33* in 2022, and is re-sung distorted in 2026. The Lucius/Loop line traces back to 2008: a mirror-self byline, "Rorrim Ehtni" ("In the Mirror" spelled backwards), written into two song titles on an early band record, and fully billed as antagonist by 2026. Two forces, two decades, arriving at the same year from opposite directions.
>
> The doctrine predates its keystone song by three years, so *33*'s "The Circle" formalizes a frame Roy was already using. The right word is convergence, not construction: the mythology grew toward itself rather than being assembled to order. The dates are the grounded part; the convergence framing is this guide's.
> [!reading]- She Held the String (origin, exile, return)
> The founding myth is bracketed by two feminine figures who hold the same object. It opens with a primordial Jaguar, "a world tied on a string… she made other Jagwars, then taught them to sing," who possesses the string and gives the song. It closes with a Wise One who "remembered she once held the string." Beginning and end rhyme, and both are *she*. Read alongside [[The Thread]], the cosmogony resolves into one image: the feminine holds the string of feeling and song, the "new kings" (cages, commodification, "you can't sing") cut it, and recovery means re-membering that thread. That severance, heart cut from its animating line at civilizational scale, is the same cut [[Sir Lucius]] performs at personal scale.
>
> On this reading the divine feminine is one feminine *function* seen at three points of the cycle, origin, exile, return, not a single named character. Three traditions braid here without collapsing into each other: the Gnostic Sophia, the Kabbalistic Shekhinah, and the Marian vessel, each pictured holding the same string of feeling and song across origin, exile, and return. [[Mary]] belongs in that company only as a comparative restorative figure, an archetypal neighbor to the pattern: the Wise One is not "Mary," and the question of who, if anyone, *is* the maker stays genuinely open. The guardrail is archetypal continuity, not identification.
>
> The Wise One also holds two faces at once, joined by remembrance. There is a cosmic-source face (she *was* the maker, a Sophia/Shekhinah register, wisdom in exile who remembers and returns) and an immanent-collective face: because the song was hidden inside *every* Jagwar, the Wise One is the template of remembrance any of us can instantiate, all of us, remembering. Roy grounds the collective face publicly ("Every person has it inside of them. The trick is getting it inside out"). The Gnostic hinge is that personal awakening and reunion with the maker are the same event, which is why both faces can be true without contradiction.
> [!reading]- One Song to Rule Them All
> The Manifesto FAQ states it outright: "The world needs music, but the world doesn't need more songs. There's only one song. I'm still learning how to write it." Read through the Circle, that is the doctrine's spine. The one song reads as the primordial song the maker hid "inside their wings" and the kings suppressed, and the whole catalogue can be heard as successive attempts to re-transmit it. The Wise One's remembrance is what recovers it: not writing a new song, re-membering the only one. The classical name for this is anamnesis, recovery by memory rather than composition, and that is the specific feature the framework illuminates: you are not being handed something new, you are being reminded of something you already had. On the same reading, the cages the myth keeps naming are illusions of identity, boxes built around an infinite thing.
> [!reading]- Tag, You're It (the standing Circle slogan)
> The claim that the thing you seek is already within has a public slogan running as far back as the doctrine. The [[Down to You]] microsite (2021) states: "No one else can be IT, you must be IT for your own unique journey." It resurfaces as the 2025 MAGIK ARG drop-1 password "you are it," which traces directly to Alan Watts's "you're it" doctrine. Watts is an influence Roy names ("a loyal servant of the Realm"), so this lens sits closer to grounded than most framework: it illuminates the slogan, specifically.
>
> The center-doctrine keeps old company too, both quoted on Roy's public *I'm 33* board: the Tao Te Ching's "Just stay at the center of the circle and let all things take their course," and Hermes' "The center is everywhere." Alongside the feed refrain ("Every maze has a center," "You're always in the middle of a circle") the instruction is consistent. You do not walk to the center of a circle. You notice you were standing in it the whole time.
> [!reading]- The Master Key (mirrors all the way down)
> Circle-versus-Loop is one special case of a larger frame: does a reflection return you to the source, or trap you in the image? The Circle is return-to-source; the Loop is a reflection closed on itself. And [[Sir Lucius]] is the third step the binary does not capture, not just a distorted mirror but a reflection that claims sourcehood. One grounded tell that the mirror is structural rather than decorative: across the sung catalogue the pronoun counts run *I* ≈ *the* ≈ *you*, neck-and-neck, so the mirror is the grammar of the writing, not only an image laid on top of it. The full frame lives at [[Source vs Reflection]].
> [!reading]- Everybody Now (a unison is not a communion)
> Both poles look identical from a distance: a crowd singing together. Communion is many *distinct* voices singing the truth back; spectacle is many voices forced into the *same* song. The in-lyric anchor is "the crooks and believers all sing the same song" ([[Great Time to Be Human]]).
>
> The sing-back gesture carries the whole idea when it goes right. The song the maker gave returns through the crowd's voices: it enacts the founding myth (the suppressed song recovered audibly, the Jagwars singing again), it scales "It moves to me, I move to you" into a closing ring of mutual movement, and it runs on remembrance, not reception, the crowd remembering a song that was always inside it. It is also the anti-metric: you cannot stream-count communion. But the mode of relation decides, not the crowd itself; the same gesture can be commanded, harvested, or staged.
>
> Across the corpus the device sorts by voice. Roy-voiced songs stage the communion-echo (Long Time Coming, Loser's I-to-we bridge, Shine); Lucius-voiced songs stage commanded or harvested echo (the Pied-Piper "sing along follow me" of I Like to Party, Pay Attention's "What's my name?", the Circus's "scream and shout," the weaponized ring-game of Not Your Homie). A built-in crowd even lives at the mix level: the released lyric texts are saturated with parenthetical background echoes, *(In a loop)*, *(Watching me)*, the record echoing its own claim back to itself.
> [!map]- Tower of Babble
> There is a scriptural spine under "a unison is not a communion," and Lucius hands it over himself. When Roy says the banana-button hit "doesn't mean anything," Lucius agrees with relish: "Exactly. It's nonsense. It's all nonsense." That is the Tower of Babel in one line: Genesis 11's "one language and the same words" that God confuses (the Hebrew text's own pun, *balal*, "to confuse," folk-carried into English *babble*). Babel is the scriptural name for one language collapsing into noise, and a crowd taught to sing one song back to Lucius is the Babel crowd, whose biblical fate is to scatter.
>
> The Circle's communion reads as the exact inverse, an anti-Babel, a Pentecost shape: many tongues, one understanding, distinct voices that nonetheless mean the same true thing. So the two poles are not just together versus forced-together; they are Babel (meaning evacuated) against Pentecost (meaning restored across difference). This reading stands on public material alone: the on-camera "it's all nonsense," the Genesis pun, and "all sing the same song."
>
> There is even a literal babble stratum to point at: a wordless layer of vocables running under the words, the na's and la's, that reads as babble or Pentecost depending on who is listening and why.
> [!map]- Spin Class (dervish vs circus)
> "Spinning you round and round" ([[Welcome to the Circus]]) is the circle in its most mechanical form: spin without consciousness, return without transformation. The whirling dervish and the circus-spinee perform the *exact same motion*; everything turns on what is at the center. Laid out, the distinction is the whole Loop/Circle split in miniature:
>
> | The dervish's spin (Circle) | The circus's spin (Loop) |
> |---|---|
> | Chosen | Imposed |
> | Oriented toward the center | Disorienting, away from the center |
> | The self is the axis | The self is the rim |
> | Silence at the center | No center |
>
> If the Circle is the dervish's still center, the Circus is what happens when you remove the center: you spin with no one at the axis, vertigo instead of prayer. The wheel's wider tradition-web (Samsara and its exit, moksha; the Tarot's Wheel of Fortune; Boethius' *Rota Fortunae*; the hamster wheel) runs on the same operative distinction, which way the center is pulling you, and each is held loosely as a rhyme illuminating that one distinction, not stacked as proof of design.
> [!props]- Fear in Reverse (inversion, worn on the body)
> The Circle-to-Loop flip is one instance of a general law Roy wears literally. The tattoo "FEAR Functions like Prayer in Reverse" (his gloss: fear drives us *away* from our destiny; he acts out of love instead) names the mechanism: the same machine with the sign flipped. Inversion keeps the form intact and reverses only the vector; it is not negation. The same logic runs ROSE ↔ ESOR (a palindrome) and the mirror-writing "Rorrim Ehtni." A pointed sub-case is the Pinocchio string-inversion: "I've Got No Strings" sells *stringlessness* as freedom, severance sold as liberation, while the Circle runs it backward, "the wise one remembered she once held the string." Realness comes from re-membering the connection, not cutting it. And the theatrical arc stages the inversion as plot: Lucius builds "his own Dark Circle within The Circle."
> [!mask]- The Circle (Lucius Version): a cover-up, not a cover
> The *Lucius Lullaby* opener, on this guide's hearing, performs four precise inversions of the keystone, and all four are interpretation built on two facts: the substituted lyric and the mechanical repetition. **Awakening to dreaming:** the song of remembrance rendered as a literal sleep-song, the Circle's waking doctrine turned into "I'm dreaming." **Depth to platitude:** the cosmology flattened to "it's a beautiful life." **Circle to Loop:** the living shape become a music box, wound from outside, no will of its own (beauty without agency is the Lucius condition exactly). **Many voices to one surface:** the original's communion become a single smooth surface hiding its multiplicity.
>
> The credits are factual and telling. The track is not instrumental: "sir lucius" and "ROY" are credited as two distinct vocalists, with Roy on a literal Music Box plus bass, synth, and keys, alongside named background vocalists (Charlotte Egner, Reagan Egner, and Anika Noni Rose). Then, as a listening observation, the guide's ear and not a credit line: the layered voices are aligned to sound like one voice unless you listen closely, and the track flows seamlessly into track 2, so it plays live as a single overture. The album opens *inside* the corrupted Circle, and the un-distorted doctrine is absent from the record, present only by its violation.
>
> One more turn, from the public *I'm 33* board: the board's Tracks list closes on "O," glossed as the Zen enso, "wholeness and cyclic return… a mirror of its painter," with the instruction to draw your own circle. If every circle drawn mirrors the hand that draws it, then a "(Lucius Version)" is not a copy at all. It is the same circle re-painted by a different hand, which is exactly why the opener reads as a bait-and-switch and not a cover: same shape, different painter, opposite charge.
> [!reading]- The Truth Will Set You Free (terms and conditions apply)
> John 8:32 ("the truth will set you free") refracts across three eras and tracks the Loop-arc by how each one handles the truth. *It's Your Time* (2022, heart-led): "the truth is hard to tell." *Bad Feeling* (2023, split): "the truth is a lie that nobody can tell." *Lucius Lullaby* (2026, mind-led): "but nothing's what it seems." The same verse, degrading from hard-but-real to nothing-is-real: the Loop measured in scripture-handling. A related light/dark pair: "Life is a loop" (name the trap) versus "Life is but a dream" (be sung *inside* it), the two poles of the "life is but a ___" family. "I'm dreaming" may be the album-wide sedation motif, the lullaby that puts the Circle's waking doctrine back to sleep.
> [!map]- Rhymes, Not Receipts (framework, held loosely)
> The Circle's deepest resonances are framework rhymes, each attached here to the one feature it illuminates, none of them claims the work makes outright. In the Lurianic Kabbalah Roy engages (see [[Kabbalah - The Tree of Life]]), *tzimtzum* is the maker's self-withdrawal leaving the divine concealed within creation, recovered by reintegration (*tikkun*): it rhymes with the founding myth's maker who withdraws and hides the song within. The "kingdom within" (and Luke 17:21, "the kingdom of God is within you") names truth as uncovered, not acquired: it maps the inside-of-the-inside specifically. There is a clean Plato's-cave inversion: where Plato's cave holds shadows mistaken for the real, the myth's "small cave where the Jagwars used to sing" holds the truth, the original relation forgotten then remembered. Tolkien's Ainulindalë supplies creation sustained as song: the maker teaching the Jagwars to sing. And the Kybalion's Neutralization, "polarizing yourself at the point where you desire to rest," is one lens on "the loop ends the moment you choose it": the Loop de-participated, not defeated. Across all of them the recurring shape is descent into forgetfulness and recovery by memory. Do not upgrade the rhymes to cross-encoding: they rhyme, they do not testify.
> [!reading]- The Loop, Now a Major Motion Picture
> On the curated "Pattern Represented in Movies" index (part of the public *I'm 33* board), **Groundhog Day** sits among the strongest entries: a time-loop escaped through *love*, love transforming the Loop into the Circle, rendered as a feature film. Adjacent: **The Giver**, remembrance at collective scale, one keeper who remembers standing where the Wise One stands. The guardrail: Roy curated the list, it is not a decoder ring. The films illustrate the Pattern; they don't encode it. (Years earlier, the IG "Modern Archeology" series posted a cause/effect spiral time-mandala captioned "what time actually is," grounding the Circle's no-beginning-no-end as non-linear, recursive time well before *33*.)
> [!reading]- Both Sides Now (Joni's opposite carousel)
> Joni Mitchell is a confirmed *33* influence, not a loose comparison: her *Woodstock* is a credited interpolation on "Soul Is A Star," and the whole album runs a dialogue with her *Ladies of the Canyon*. One thread of that dialogue is *The Circle Game* ("captive on the carousel of time… in the circle game"), the trapped-carousel image, the *same* image as the Jagwar Twin Circle with the opposite charge: Joni's circle traps, this one grows from within. (That one is an uncredited thematic echo to the song "The Circle" — a strong read, not a credit.)
>
> Roy's account of clearing the *Woodstock* interpolation is on record: labels said she would never clear it, he found "a friend who knew a friend… who knew Joni," she loved it and signed off, "Two people have done it, me and Janet Jackson." Read as the cosmology performed in public, clearing a piece of Joni's music and finishing it into a new song is the Circle enacted across fifty years, one act of love completed across time, return with transformation instead of repetition. (What travels forward is most likely the melody, the borrowed *shape* rather than a verbatim line — the released track carries no verbatim Woodstock quotation — so hear it as one circle re-drawn.)
> [!receipts]- Sources and confidence
> Grounded down here: the 2019 and 2008 dates; the Manifesto FAQ; the *Down to You* microsite line and the ARG password; the board quotes (Tao Te Ching, Hermes, the enso "O," the film index); the tattoo and its gloss; the *Lucius Lullaby* opener's credits and substituted lyric; the Joni Mitchell credit and Roy's clearance account; "it's all nonsense" on camera; "all sing the same song" in the released lyric.
>
> Strong readings: the convergence framing; the feminine-function reading (archetypal continuity, never identification); the sing-back voice-split; the four inversions of the opener; the Joni clearance as the Circle enacted; the scripture-handling arc.
>
> Framework, attributed to its traditions: tzimtzum/tikkun, the kingdom within, the Plato's-cave inversion, Ainulindalë, Babel against Pentecost, Neutralization, the wheel-web, the enso. Licensed by Roy's open engagement with these traditions; the work never asserts them as method. None of this is the answer; it is one way of seeing it.
