# The Empty Mirror — The Deep End
> [!gist] The heavy machinery behind [[The Empty Mirror]]
> This is the dense floor: the full tattoo cluster, the scriptural and Kabbalistic registers, the literary rhymes, the word-counts, and the ways this reading could be wrong. Dense and speculative by design. Nothing here is required to walk through the main page, and everything here is framework or deep interpretation unless marked otherwise. Start at [[The Empty Mirror]] if you have not.

> [!props]- Ink-ventory of the empty self
> The Empty Mirror is one node in a deliberate field of apophatic body-text, and the cluster reads as a single argument: **ME** crossed out ("not about me"), **I'M NOT HERE** ("but I'm also here," he adds), *In service to all, in service to the one*, a crossed-out line to the effect that what we say about God is always incomplete, **WAKE UP** (Gurdjieff), the Ouroboros, and the unexplained **KILL YOUR SELF**. The whole body is composed as a literal mirror-diagram: every tattoo inked on the right side then mirrored to the left, with a single **+** at center spanning both halves.
>
> Two of these need care, honesty first. On the crossed-out God-line, Roy's gloss is deadpan-practical: "I messed up here so I crossed it out." The prettier reading, that the crossing-out itself *performs* the incompleteness, the via negativa done in ink, is this guide's, not his; hold it as the reading it is. And **KILL YOUR SELF** he has not glossed at all; the contextually coherent reading is ego-death, kill the *false* self, consistent with a mirror that shows nothing, but it carries no further weight here and should never be read literally or sensationalized.
> [!reading]- Everything is a mirror (the 2019 root)
> In a 2019 "Diary of a loser" Facebook post, Roy narrates a genuinely lovely day, gave a stranger his hair-feather, meditated on the beach, jacuzzi at sunset, bills it all as a loser's diary, and signs off: *"Here's a bathroom mirror selfie. Everything is a mirror."* The same post mentions falling asleep to a documentary on the Hebrew language, and the selfie shows the **I'M NOT HERE** tattoo mirror-reversed. The mirror doctrine, the Hebrew interest, and the bathroom-selfie deadpan, all in one post, years before any of it had a name.
> [!reading]- The God Who Sees Me, pulled both ways
> One divine name, pulled in opposite directions, and this whole drawer is a word-field reading, visibly interpretive, not the plain meaning of the names. [[Sir Lucius]] wears **El Roi** ("the God who sees me," Genesis 16) on his throat, a self constituted by being seen, while saying *"you don't know me."* On this reading he takes the **object** position, the *me* that is seen, and the placement sharpens it: the throat is the site of speech, so every word he says leaves his body through the phrase "the God who sees me." A refusal to be known, issued from the one spot on his body that swears he always is. Roy, meanwhile, signs **El Roy**, claiming the *seeing*, the subject position, and then empties the very self that would be seen ("I have become nothing"). Lucius grabs the "…sees ME"; Roy takes "the God who SEES" and dissolves the me.
>
> There is a mirror built into the name's origin, too: in Genesis, Hagar names the God who finds her by saying, in effect, *I have now seen the one who sees me*. And *"i sometimes i can't see myself"* is what the dissolved object feels like from the inside. The tattoo and its placement are grounded; every vector drawn from them here is a reading. The surveillance-side of this thread lives at [[Witnessing vs Surveillance]].
> [!map]- The cup and the husk
> The two emptinesses map onto a Lurianic distinction, and the work does not merely gesture at the tradition, it stages it outright in a public artifact. The **kli** is the vessel that transmits *because* it is hollow (the kenotic pole); the **kelipah** is the husk or shell that substitutes and seals (the reflection pole). On this reading, "the same nothing, redeemed" is precisely *raising the spark out of the shell*: the vessel and the clone are both empty selves, and the entire difference is whether the emptiness is open to the source or sealed against it. A resonance, held as one, with the streams kept un-collapsed.
>
> For the staging, see the Hall of Mirrors artifact *David Star, Where The World Was Crossed* (solved code TWISTED LADDER): a Roy-painted bedtime-myth of the Lurianic story, kings and queens of time thrown as sparks down among the shells, then climbing a ladder to become constellations. The tradition this page treats as resonance, that artifact treats as plot. The fuller treatment belongs on [[Keilim - The Breaking of the Vessels|Keilim]].
> [!map]- A crowded mirror: the traditions in the glass
> The Empty Mirror sits at a crossroads of named and resonant traditions; all of it is framework, attributed, never asserted as authorial intent. **Kenosis** (Christian self-emptying, Philippians 2): the vessel emptied so something can pass through; "I'm just a vessel for God." **Anatta / no-self** (Buddhist): the self in the mirror is nothing as *doctrine*, not as mood; "I am no thing." **Apophatic theology / the via negativa**: the self and the divine defined by negation. **Zen's empty mirror**: the mind that adds nothing of its own, the clean glass that transmits. **Exodus 3:14, "I AM THAT I AM"**: the positive face of the apophatic no-thing, which Roy riffs as "All I am is that I am." **1 Corinthians 13:12**, "through a glass darkly": the mirror as imperfect mediation. **Davar** (דָּבָר), "the Word" and "the thing," creation-by-speech, with *lo-davar* as "no-thing"; the letter-mysticism here is held as tradition, never as Roy's method. **Creation ex nihilo**: "No thing ever creates another thing."
>
> Named public influences thread through it: **Gurdjieff** (WAKE UP), **Alan Watts** ("you are it," the MAGIK first drop), and a Jungian shadow note, the Jung line Roy posted about people doing almost anything to avoid facing their own soul, which is the mask/Empty-Mirror axis exactly. One lead stays a lead: **Neville Goddard**'s "change the concept of self, change the world" appears near-verbatim on the *Down to You* card but is still unverified against a primary; never load-bearing. And one image is held lightly: **the Moon** as the natural picture of the receiving mirror, nothing of its own, shining by what it reflects. A clean fit for the kenotic pole and consistent with the grounded Moon-is-Roy's-territory mapping; a resonance, not a claim, and not Lucius's.
>
> Then the literary rhyme this guide cannot resist and does not mistake for influence: a century ago **Fernando Pessoa**, writing under one of his invented selves, opened a poem *"I am nothing. I shall never be anything"* ("The Tobacco Shop"), the same apophatic shrug arriving a hundred years early. He even left the counter-warning, *"the inventor of the mirror poisoned the human soul"* (*The Book of Disquiet*), literature's note that the substitute-mirror is the dangerous one. There is no sign Roy has read him; this is a resonance the guide draws, nothing more. (If you want the joke of it: Pessoa reviewed *Lucius Lullaby* decades before it existed.)
> [!reading]- Mirror made grammar
> A quiet empirical footing sits under all of this. Across ~45 sung lyrics (roughly 13,000 words), the pronoun **"I"** narrowly out-counts both **"the"** and **"you,"** with "you" close behind. Widen the lens and it sharpens: the whole *I*-cluster (I, I'm, my, me) runs to about 912, the *you*-cluster to about 635, and together those two knots of pronoun are something like 12% of every word sung. The count is real; the reading is the reading: the catalogue is, grammatically, an I↔you machine. Two pronouns, endlessly turned to face each other, is the whole mirror doctrine shrunk to the size of a sentence. (From the [[Source vs Reflection]] grammar count.)
> [!warning]- Devil's advocate (someone has to)
> The honest counter-read, held openly as authorial-intent speculation rather than fact: an artist who repeatedly posts "I have become nothing" and "I'm just a vessel" is also presenting a *brand* of egoless authenticity, which is a performance as much as [[Sir Lucius]] is. On this read, "authentic Roy" is the marketed counter-pole to "Lucius the villain," and both are authored. It does not dissolve the sincerity of the material. But a concept built on emptying the self should be able to look straight at the possibility that the emptying is also a pose. The falsifier stays on the table.
