# Inherited Substrate — The Deep End > [!gist] The heavy machinery behind [[Inherited Substrate]] > This is the dense floor: the full working ladder and its casework, the shared-tradition census, the maze poem where inheritance and invention land in the same act, the scholarly frame, the method auditing itself, and the open threads. Dense and speculative by design. Nothing here is required to walk through the main page; start at [[Inherited Substrate]] if you have not. --- > [!map]- Mind the Rungs (the full ladder, and the C.R.E.A.M. that got carded) > The four public rungs are the everyday version. The full working ladder has five, and the fifth is the one that does the cleanup: > > | Tier | What it means | > |---|---| > | **Credited / stated** | A composer credit, named source, public board text, or public Roy statement. The grounded floor. | > | **Adopted** | No credit on that exact line, but breadcrumbs and context make the reading strong. | > | **Shared tradition** | Roy *and* the comparison draw on the same reservoir; no transmission claimed. | > | **Tempting resemblance** | Interesting, not yet anchored. Hold, don't assert. | > | **Ruled out** | A plausible attribution that *failed* primary-source testing, logged as failed so it can't sneak back in later. | > > The worked example for the bottom rung: Wu-Tang's *"C.R.E.A.M."* (1993) and its spelled hook are ruled out as a source for the spelled *"D-R-E-A-M"* in [[Dream - Dream]]. No credit, no statement, no cadence match. It is kept out precisely so it can't launder its way in and dilute the solid Mercer reading, and it is logged one rung up as a co-participant in the same tradition: spelling-a-word-out as a shared gesture of passing a song down. **Co-participant is not a source.** > > And a live example of how loosely the *tempting resemblance* rung should be held: a coiled, minor-key classical dread you might swear you hear echoed in the *Bad Feeling / Happy Face* register. No credit, no statement, nothing but a nice rhyme, which is exactly the point of the rung. Hold it, and be ready to drop it the second nothing else backs it up. > [!map]- Same Well, Different Buckets (the shared-tradition census) > The cases where the work and the comparison both drink from the same old well, no transmission claimed in either direction: > * **Flood mythology**: Genesis, Gilgamesh, the universal deluge, behind the title *Subject to Flooding*. The canonical shared-tradition case. > * **The anti-civilization lineage**: Rousseau, Freud's *Civilization and Its Discontents*, deep ecology. In [[Moths to the Flame]], Lucius adopts the line and nihilizes it: *"Civilization has been a mistake."* > * **Fleetwood Mac's *"Go Your Own Way"***: a resonance, not a source. > > The traditions the work visibly participates in, gathered: biblical and scriptural language (the Flood; Chaplin quoting Luke; *El Roi*, Genesis 16); the American songbook and jazz standards (Mercer, Vaughan); mid-century pop and Motown (Rockwell); the film-musical songbook (Bricusse and Newley); the singer-songwriter canon (Joni Mitchell); nursery rhymes and public-domain children's forms (cf. *Welcome to the Circus*'s *"ashes ashes"*); family and ancestral transmission, craft and trauma alike; and the Western esoteric braid Roy assembles on the *I'm 33* board (the *Kybalion*, Kabbalah, Jung, Walter Russell). > [!lore]- Old Material, New Poem (the maze's own worked case) > Hall of Mirrors artifact #84, *David Star, "Where The World Was Crossed"* (solved code *TWISTED LADDER*), is a public artifact: an original Roy-authored bedtime-story poem built almost entirely from Lurianic Kabbalah. In that tradition's terms: a prince who *"dreamed of worlds and kept them in his crown,"* a storm that scatters the kings and queens of time as sparks into the Deep, and the long climb back up the ladder to become constellations. Old material, new poem: inheritance and invention landing in the same act, participation in an older form doing exactly what the main page describes. The participation reading is strong, not stated. > > A speculative resonance rides on the code itself: *TWISTED LADDER* reads as the ladder of ascent and the DNA double helix at once, the mystical climb and the *genes* pun in one image. On this reading the maze keeps its own echo of the inherited stack; held as a resonance, nothing more. (See [[Keilim - The Breaking of the Vessels]] · [[Hall of Mirrors]].) > [!reading]- The Smart Cousin (Kristeva, and why this guide is stricter) > The cleanest scholarly cousin to this idea is Julia Kristeva's **intertextuality**, from literary theory: texts mean *through* other texts and codes, so echoes are natural and pervasive before anyone plans them. This guide borrows the insight and then tightens the screw: Kristeva explains why echoes are expected; Inherited Substrate says how to *tier* them. > > The frame is ours, brought to the material; the work never states it, and no claim is made that Roy sources Kristeva. Which is also the standing caution for the whole method: *"this is inherited"* is always a finding about the cultural reservoir and about our own tiering. Misapplied, it can masquerade as a claim about *him* when it's only a claim about the well. > [!reading]- Somebody's Watching the Credits (why Rockwell, of all songs) > On [[The Watchers]], the borrow runs deeper than a hook, and the rhyme is nearly point-for-point. Rockwell (Kennedy William Gordy, Berry Gordy's son) wrote a paranoid prayer-song under his father's shadow. He submitted the demo under a chosen name, *Rockwell* rather than *Gordy*, to be judged on the music instead of the surname, and he put on a fake British accent to complete the disguise: the way Roy English performs as Jagwar Twin, with the pointed difference that *Roy English* stays the writing credit on every release, including this one. The original's most famous voice, Michael Jackson singing the hook, went uncredited, the ghost in the recording. And the deepest rhyme of all: contested authorship, *who gets to claim a song*, is the exact engine of the entire [[Sir Lucius]] system. > > Tier honesty: every fact about Rockwell here is grounded in the source's own record. That the song was chosen *for* this parable is a strong reading, not a stated one. > [!warning]- Marking Our Own Homework (where the method bends) > The discipline is honest enough to flag where it's broken. It is **asymmetric**: every tier downgrades, credit earns the top rung and everything weaker slides down, but there is no equal-and-opposite brake on wrongly demoting genuine internal invention into mere inheritance. A real false negative costs Roy credit he's owed. The fix is a standing rule: *"inherited"* must clear the same primary-source bar as *"ruled out,"* or the method quietly under-credits the artist. > > Two self-audits stay open by design. **(1)** *Inherited vs internal* may be a false binary. The work treats myth and scripture as tools it reworks, so inheritance and invention are often the same act (the Oompa-Loompa interpolation that is also a Lucius-coded gesture), which suggests the tiers might be **two axes** rather than one ladder, a symbol scoring high on both at once. **(2)** The falsifier: a case that is simultaneously a credited interpolation *and* a demonstrably deliberate internal encoding would prove the two-axes point. The nearest live evidence is artifact #84 above, inherited Lurianic material and an original authored poem in one move; it doesn't fully settle the question (the poem isn't a credited interpolation in the composer-credit sense), but it is the strongest case-in-waiting. The method is stronger for naming where it bends. > [!warning]- No Proto-Anything (don't read 2026 back into 2018) > The substrate frame doubles as a brake on reading later meaning back into earlier work. Applied to [[Dream - Dream]]: the flatter, truer read is an earnest 2018 indie-pop awakening anthem with a Mercer interpolation, no proto-anything. Its *"rise up"* and *"stairway to Heaven"* are maximally generic inherited aspiration-language, borrowed precisely *because* it's universal. A 2018 track can be an early precursor of what came later; retrospective rhyme is not a blueprint. When the retrospective-coherence guard and the substrate guard agree, they override fancier readings. > [!question]- Loose Threads (the leads still dangling) > A method built on provenance is only as honest as its list of unfinished provenance: > * **The "Essex" credit.** *"Good Day"* lists a co-writer credited only as *Essex*, so far unidentified: possibly a real collaborator, possibly an untraced interpolation source surfacing in the credit field. Logged, not resolved. > * **Which Vaughan artifact.** On *Dream/Dream*, whether the track samples Vaughan's exact 1957 *Mister Kelly's* take or interpolates the Mercer composition is not pinned. The credit proves the lineage, not which artifact was lifted. > * **The *Precious Time* scrap.** The working identification, that the sampled bit is Vaughan's spoken pre-vocal chatter rather than another element, still wants a by-ear pin against the *Mister Kelly's* tape. > * **Musical or lyrical Joni.** On [[Soul Is A Star]], the cowrite and blessing are grounded, but whether the borrowed element is musical or lyrical is unconfirmed; the song doesn't reproduce *Woodstock*'s signature lines, which tilts it musical. > * **Does the relay continue?** *Subject to Flooding* proves the practice; whether any later work extends it into the machine theme is open. [[Machine vs Human]] gestures at it, but there is no documented later instance yet. > [!feed]- Back up for air > [[Inherited Substrate]] · [[The Pattern]] · [[Source vs Reflection]] · [[Hall of Mirrors]] · [[The Watchers]]
