# Consumption — The Deep End
> [!gist] The heavy machinery behind [[Consumption]]
> This is the dense floor: the long tradition of consumption-as-adversary, the Lurianic husks, the two fires, the arrested alchemy, and the deeper artifact readings. Dense and speculative by design. Nothing here is required to walk through the main page, and everything here is framework or exploratory reading unless marked otherwise. Start at [[Consumption]] if you have not.

> [!lore]- A Brief History of Getting Eaten
> The image of consumption-as-adversary runs deep and wide. This shelf is the lens the guide brings, a set of speculative resonances, not evidence of intent:
> * **Sheol as a mouth:** *"Sheol enlarges its appetite and opens its mouth beyond measure"* (Isaiah 5:14), the underworld as the consuming void.
> * **The roaring lion:** *"seeking whom he may devour"* (1 Peter 5:8), predation as the adversary's mode.
> * **The beasts that consume kingdoms:** Daniel 7 and Revelation 13, empire itself as a consumption-system.
> * **Moloch:** the god children were fed to (2 Kings 23:10, Jeremiah 7:31), consumption as false-god worship; Allen Ginsberg's *Howl* revives Moloch for industrial capitalism, the machine-god fed on the living.
> * **The Walrus and the Carpenter** (a literary lens): Lewis Carroll's two hosts weep over the oysters, sympathizing and dabbing their eyes while eating every last one. Predation dressed as hospitality. It rhymes twice: the cheerfulness that is the force-feeding, and the fact that it comes from *Through the Looking-Glass*, the mirror-world this whole project already lives inside.
> * **Capital:** Marx's labor consumed and expelled as surplus value, the worker chewed up and spat out with minimal return. On this reading the Circus is that factory floor with better lighting.
> * **The Roman arena:** *panem et circenses* (Juvenal, *Satires* X, c. 100 CE), the crowd sedated not by force but by pleasure. The chains are fun. The fuller Roman floor lives at [[The Circus — The Deep End]].
> [!map]- A Husk Eats Because It Is Empty
> A speculative reading the songs invite, held loosely. In the Lurianic telling the vessels break and become the shells, the qliphoth, and their hunger is the memory of a lost relationship to the light. Once they received and transmitted; now they only capture. A husk eats because it is empty: when you have no light of your own, all you can do is take in someone else's. The Circus reads as exactly that kind of husk-system, a mouth where a maker should be, which would be the cleanest name for its sterile, generate-nothing quality.
>
> It carries one grounded public anchor: the Hall of Mirrors artifact *David Star, "Where The World Was Crossed"* (solved code **TWISTED LADDER**), a bedtime-story cosmology that sinks the Kings and Queens of Time as sparks under the shells before the long climb back. That anchor licenses the comparison; it does not make the husks the master myth of the project, and this drawer should not be read as one. See [[Keilim - The Breaking of the Vessels]].
> [!flame]- Two Fires
> Two fires sit at the edge of this concept, both scriptural, both framework. *"Our God is a consuming fire"* (Hebrews 12:29): the fire that purifies also consumes whatever cannot endure it, so consumption is not always the adversary's, sometimes it is the refiner's. Against it, the burning bush of Exodus 3, *not* consumed: presence that radiates without being used up. On this reading the Circus's fire only ever takes the first form without the refining, and never the second. It burns, and there is nothing left. See [[Moths to the Flame]], where the moth gets the death without the rebirth.
> [!map]- All Rot, No Gold
> In alchemy the nigredo, the blackening, is the *first* stage: the material is broken down in order to be reconstituted. The Circus specializes in the blackening that never completes, prima materia endlessly processed and never reconstituted. *"I'll chew you up, spit you out"* reads as dissolution with the gold-step amputated, Jonah digested but not returned, nigredo arrested mid-rot. Consumption *without* transformation is the whole signature. See [[Nigredo]].
> [!reading]- Eating in Both Directions
> [[Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)]] eats in both directions. The verse turns the audience into appetite, *"carnivores and cannibals… mandible, jaw split… gossip,"* but the Oompa-Loompas doing the singing are themselves consumed labor: imported workers paid in cacao beans, used as test subjects. The chorus that sings the warning is the factory's own product and its victim. The crowd that sings is the crowd that is eaten. (The chorus phrase *"Everything's Perfect Here"* later became the title of Roy's first gallery show, Lauren Powell Projects, LA, opened January 20, 2024.)
>
> A counter-flag worth keeping: not every devouring image encodes Consumption, and the candy-horror wordplay may just be vivid candy-horror wordplay. Roy's public gloss is deliberately modest, *"a chocolate covered reminder to trust your gut."* Hold the systems-critique and the gut-feeling at once; the gap between them is itself a wink.
> [!reading]- The God You're Already Paying
> *Pay Attention* is the attention-consumption prototype, and the structure is exact: Attention as the hidden god of the modern world, and what it consumes is awareness, the very faculty you would need to notice it eating you. The currency you spend (*"pay me"*) and the resource it extracts (*"pay Attention"*) are one substance, which is why the temptation works through consent: the mark already wants what is offered.
>
> The personifying move is on the record. The public I'm 33 board asks, in Roy's own hand, *"How to anthropomorphize attention? → Marduk,"* after the Babylonian creator-god. And the same board's *"Let Them Eat Cake"* line was later realized as the Hall of Mirrors artifact *"Caution, All Kings End"* (solved code **CAKE**), tying the board back to *I Like to Party*'s cake. The vocal-role reading (Roy voicing Attention, little luna the guide) stays a reading until the credits settle it.
> [!receipts]- Sources, confidence, and how this could be wrong
> Grounded here: the scriptural and literary texts as published works; the *David Star* and *"Caution, All Kings End"* artifacts and their solved codes, cited as public artifact captures; the I'm 33 board notes in Roy's hand; the *Bad Feeling* lyrics and the gallery-show title; Roy's public *"trust your gut"* gloss.
>
> Everything interpretive on this page is framework or speculation: the traditions permit these resonances; nothing here claims Roy intends them. The standing brake: when every devouring image maps, the mapping has stopped discriminating. If the plain reading (a dark-carnival villain boasting) accounts for the songs as well as the husks and the fires do, the apparatus is decorative. None of this is the answer; it is one way of seeing it.
