# Inherited Substrate
> [!gist] In the blue jeans, she got good genes
> Kept a bullet in her genes.
>
> Not all resemblance is reference. A project this soaked in scripture, myth, and old songs invites one very tempting mistake: treating every echo as a secret code planted just for you to find. Inherited Substrate is the brake. It sorts the work's symbols into two piles: the **inherited**, received from the wider culture (jazz standards, flood myth, nursery rhymes, family memory), and the **internal**, invented inside the Jagwar Twin world ([[Sir Lucius]], the Loop, [[The Algorithm]], the mirrors). A symbol older than the work is, by default, the work joining an older song, not the artist hiding a new one.
>
> This is a rule about culture and about our own confidence, never a claim about what Roy secretly meant. And it shrinks nothing. Once you can see the seam where an old song was handed forward, you can see what he *did* with it, which is usually the whole story. The catalogue builds by relaying: the song handed down, then handed forward again. Those two lyrics above are from two different songs, [[No. 1 Champion (la Conquistadora)|No. 1 Champion]] and [[Soul Is A Star]], the *genes / jeans* pun doing the quiet work: inheritance stated inside the songs, not just around them.
**Where it enters**
* [[Dream - Dream]] interpolates Johnny Mercer's 1944 standard *"Dream (When You're Feeling Blue)"*: Mercer and Sarah Vaughan sit right there in the composer credit, and the doubled title is the tell, the old *Dream* and the new *Dream*, stacked.
* [[Superhuman (Interlude)]] is a verbatim Charlie Chaplin sample from *The Great Dictator* (1940), *"the kingdom of God is within man… let us all unite"*: an inherited human voice placed straight into the sequence, neither Roy nor Lucius speaking.
* [[Soul Is A Star]] credits Joni Mitchell as a cowriter, and Roy posted his delight in his own words: *"the fact that JONI MITCHELL gave me her blessing and is a cowriter is still mind blowing."*
That is the surface: trust the credit, notice the seam. The drawers go one layer down at a time.

> [!map]- One Album, Three Ghosts
> The cleanest proof that this is a practice and not a one-off sits on a single album. *Subject to Flooding* (2018) carries credited outside material from Johnny Mercer, Sarah Vaughan, **and** Charlie Chaplin: three documented transmissions on one album, which reads as a method, not a run of coincidences. Vaughan may feed *two* tracks: her 1957 *Live at Mister Kelly's* recording sits behind *Dream/Dream*, and [[Precious Time]] carries a sampled spoken scrap, most likely her chatter before the song rather than the song itself. The credit is the solid floor; the exact scrap still wants a by-ear pin.
>
> The relay keeps going. [[The Watchers]] interpolates Rockwell's *"Somebody's Watching Me"* (1984), Rockwell credited, the hook surfacing verbatim. [[Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)]] interpolates the *Willy Wonka* jingle (1971), Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley credited: the cautionary-jingle function kept, the words swapped, glossed deadpan in a public post as *"a chocolate covered reminder to trust your gut."*
>
> One field note rides along: a lyric site had quietly dropped Mercer from the *Dream/Dream* credits, and the primary source, Apple Music's composer field, restored him. Trust the credit, not the aggregator. And a reading worth holding about what all these voices are *doing*: they transmit rather than substitute, reflected light that still leads, not dead citation (the full pairing lives at [[Source vs Reflection]]).
> [!reading]- The Blessing (what a relay is for)
> The practice needs a point, and the Joni cowrite is the strongest candidate, held as a reading and not a fact. The biography underneath it is public: in a 2018 interview Roy describes a childhood house full of his mom's music, *"Celtic chants and amazing African drumming, Native American flute music,"* and a venue bio notes he grew up on the Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan she played around the house. Decades later the son writes a song Joni herself signs, sampled from *"Woodstock"*, with her blessing on the credit. The records she played became an album he made *with* one of the artists on them.
>
> Read one way, that borrowing stops being citation and becomes completion, finishing something across fifty years, the relay stated as a life. The honest counterweight: none of it requires direct lineage. A flatter, equally defensible read is that Roy and Joni drink from the same singer-songwriter well, and the *completion* is meaning we add after the fact. Certainty is a tone, not a truth. Either way the credit is the only hard floor, and the completion is the reading built on top of it.
> [!reading]- Same Wire, Opposite Signal
> Then there is the substrate Roy describes in his own voice, where the filing system becomes a worldview. In a Mirror Session he describes the self as an inherited stack: *"every single human being who has come before you is within you, like encoded… you're like this mountain, stacked… someone who learned to sing down the line is just embedded into you."* In another, answering a question about ancestors, he describes inherited darkness: voices that *"I know that they're not mine… lies that they believed,"* and a stated wish, *"I'm gonna heal that for you guys."* On the *I'm 33* board the neutral mechanism is written out plainly: *"every generation carries within it the seed of all previous generations."*
>
> Same wire, opposite signal. The channel that hands down the craft, someone who learned to sing, embedded in you, is the same channel that hands down the lie. One cargo is [[The Circle]]: remembrance, return, the song passed forward. The other is the Loop: repetition without transformation. What the song does with the seed is the fork.
>
> Two guards so this drawer stays honest. The Mirror Sessions material is biographical, citable for how Roy talks about himself and his philosophy, not a lore episode. And reading the *voices that aren't mine* as a neighbor to [[The Protector]]'s inner-voice-as-not-self is a resonance between two different mechanisms, held side by side, not fused.
> [!mask]- Yarn Is Not a Confession
> The counterfeit of this whole page is tier-inflation: the reading that turns every coincidence into a conspiracy, until *Roy intentionally encoded all of this* becomes the silent default. The everyday defense is a small ladder, climbed downward:
>
> * **Credited or stated**: a composer credit, a named source, board text, a public statement. Solid floor.
> * **Strongly implied**: no credit on that line, but the breadcrumbs make it clear.
> * **Shared well**: both draw on the same old reservoir, no transmission claimed either way.
> * **Just a rhyme**: interesting, unanchored, held loosely, never asserted.
>
> The worked example: Wu-Tang's *"C.R.E.A.M."* is ruled out as a source for the spelled *"D-R-E-A-M"* hook, no credit, no statement, no cadence match, and kept out so it can't dilute the solid Mercer reading. But it stays logged one rung up, as a co-participant in the same spelling-it-out tradition. The maxim worth tattooing somewhere: **co-participant is not a source.** Think of the difference between the string board and the courtroom: pin all the yarn you like, just don't call a resemblance a confession.
>
> The sibling discipline is [[The Pattern]], which guards the opposite border: don't force universal correspondence, the way this page says don't force source-dependence. Two siblings watching the same fence from opposite sides.
> [!reading]- Physician, Heal Thyself
> The discipline isn't something this guide invented and imposed; Roy enacts it. The sharpest instance is an aphorism from a public post: *"I would map a crow onto Mercury but that's just personal. I don't recommend you do it."* He runs the correspondence-mapping and pre-emptively disowns it as personal and non-prescriptive, the exact move this page enforces, delivered as a shrug.
>
> A production footnote in the same spirit: Roy has told the story of playing Dr. Dre the drumless, orchestral *"Worldstop."* Dre asked where the drums were; Roy declined to add them. The shrug at the most decorated drum-programmer in pop is the same instinct as the crow disclaimer: take what you inherit from a tradition, then refuse the part that isn't yours.
> [!descend] The Deep End
> The heavier machinery behind this page, the full five-rung ladder and its ruled-out casework, the shared-well census, the Hall of Mirrors poem where inheritance and invention land in one act, the Kristeva frame, the Rockwell parable, the method auditing itself, and the threads still dangling, lives in [[Inherited Substrate — The Deep End]]. Dense by design. The page you are on stands without it.
> [!receipts]- Sources and confidence
> Grounded in credits and public words: the composer credits on [[Dream - Dream]], [[Precious Time]], [[Superhuman (Interlude)]], [[Soul Is A Star]], [[Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)]], and [[The Watchers]]; Roy's posted Joni delight and the *"chocolate covered reminder"* gloss; the *"crow onto Mercury"* post; the *"seed of all previous generations"* board text; the *genes / jeans* lyrics in the songs themselves. The Mirror Sessions quotes (the mountain stacked; the voices that aren't mine) are grounded and biographical, cited by where they were said.
>
> Strong readings, labeled where they stand: that *Subject to Flooding* establishes a deliberate relay practice; that the Joni borrow reads as completion; that the inherited voices transmit rather than substitute.
>
> Framework, held in the Deep End and attributed to its traditions: the intertextuality frame, the Lurianic material behind the maze poem.
>
> Open threads (held, not asserted): which exact Vaughan artifact was lifted, whether the Joni borrow is musical or lyrical, and whether the relay continues past 2018. This page stands on released music, public interviews and posts, official videos, and the publicly viewable Hall of Mirrors. None of this is the answer; it is one way of seeing it.
