# Duality > [!gist] There's two sides to every story > The artist bio carries the line, and Roy posted it himself in June 2026. > > Duality is the most stable organizing principle Roy has named for Jagwar Twin, and it is printed on the marquee. The Twin is the dual nature, dark and light. He offers that in basically every press cycle from 2018 to 2026, and by 2026 ties it to his own Gemini Sun, "a lot of what Jagwar Twin is." The man's sign is literally the Twins, so the name is a thesis and a horoscope at once. > > The characteristic move is what the work does with the split. It does not pick a winner, and it does not melt the two into one. Roy's word for the aim is polarity, explored rather than fixed, and his stated resolution is an ordering: "my mind must serve my heart." This guide reads the larger arc not as the destruction of one pole but as the difficult work of holding, ordering, and sometimes reconciling what the split reveals: an embrace, not a funeral. That ordering is a stated aim, dramatized on the *Lucius Lullaby* arc. In a 2019 interview: "The twin is just the nature of everything we've been talking about. The dark and the light." Said the same way for the better part of a decade, the most stable single idea in the whole corpus. * "My mind must serve my heart." Four words, the published LOOP-era gate-mantra (in the theatrical telling he repeats it as he steps through a gate); his tattoos carry the parallel service formula, "in service to all, in service to the one." Notice what it is not: it is not "my mind must die." The mind stays. The relationship is reordered. * [[Down to You]] (33, 2022): "Once you find it, can't unwind it with your head on / so listen to your heart." The split stated outright in a lyric, years before it had characters. That is the surface, and it stands on its own. His earliest 2018 press already gives the whole thesis: "the twin is the dual nature — the light and the dark, the yin and the yang — that everybody has. It also plays into the fact that I'm a Gemini, so I have the twin thing." 2019: "The twin is just the nature of everything we've been talking about. The dark and the light." 2021 (Highwire): "light and dark and yin and yang." 2023/24 (Mic Magazine): "The Twin part is the light and dark or polarity of all things... really the balancing of a force." 2024 (Strife, on the name): "I think it captures a bit of who I am at the core, playing in light and dark." 2026 (an IG Live): "Gemini can also hold two truths at once... I can understand the lower and the higher, and the dark and the light, which is a lot of what Jagwar Twin is." Seven-plus distinct public statements, near-verbatim consistent. > > He uses the literal word. To Jeff Ellis: "everything we talk about is duality. Like, the internet is my friend, but it wants me dead, you know?" To Bohnes: "I feel like everything is always dual." And the aim, in a 2024 interview, is stated as exploration: "I wanted to explore polarity. I wanted to explore light and dark." *Polarity* is the word to hold onto, but hold it correctly: naming the poles is not a vote for them against balance. Poles are two aspects of one thing (hot and cold are both temperature), so neither can be amplified or amputated without deforming the whole. Exploring the polarity *is* the work of balancing it. Not polarity instead of integration; polarity, and therefore integration. > > He also gives the mechanism by which the poles relate, the same way across several years: "we are becoming more aware of our shadows, collectively and individually, and as more light comes in, more darkness is seen" (2023). The vivid version, in the Bohnes Mirror Session: dust on a pane of glass, turn up the light and the specks don't vanish, they get amplified. The aphorism version, on X in 2026: "The brightest lights cast the deepest shadows." On all three framings, shadow-work is a consequence of illumination, not a separate chore. > > He even enacts it as comedy, refusing to be flattened to one side. With Briana Cuoco, every attempt to file him under one category gets "I'm no thing," and when she apologizes for trying, he finishes her sentence deadpan: "Pigeonhole me." A project built on two-sides-to-everything will not let you collapse it to one. > > The feed keeps the receipts: "The brain thinks But the heart knows" (2023); "Knowledge divides. Wisdom unites." (2023); "Red skies ahead, but the duality of man shines brighter" (2023); "I'm always between worlds" (2023); and a dual-voice release signature, "Sir Lucius sends his thoughts. I'm here too - El Roy" (2023). A public 2021 Discord post has the doctrine before the album existed: "The middle, the balance point always holds the truth, but it's essential to understand both sides. Mind/Soul, Thought/Intuition. The key to awakening lies in the opposite." (See [[Roy's Posts — Canon Index]] for the full set.) > > And one more direction-of-travel detail, from a 2024 interview: "I saw it first in the world around me, but then realized that that was a reflection of my internal world." The outer dualities are the inner one, projected. That arrow points straight into [[Source vs Reflection]]. > [!lore]- Everything Is Dual (the board's reading list) > On the handwritten "I'm 33" board, Roy transcribed the Kybalion's Principle of Polarity verbatim: "Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet... Love and Hate are two poles of the same thing." That transcription is the closest thing to a named-tradition primary source for this whole concept. The engagement is his; the correspondences it licenses stay framework-tier. *Different in degree, not in kind* is the idea under the magnet framing: hot isn't good and cold isn't bad, only the extremes are trouble. Harmony comes from adjusting the degree, not amputating one end. > > The board also carries a little creation poem that places the duality at the origin, in nursery-rhyme sing-song: "I spoke the words One become Two / Then I was in reverse... and I became You / Well, You and I could dance forever — A Darkness and a Light — But, when we crashed and came together, A Sun was born inside." The self divides in order to see itself, and the second term is *You*; the split isn't a fall, it's the cost of playing. In the alchemical tradition that collision-birthing-a-Sun is the *coniunctio,* the union of opposites producing the Self, a resonance the guide holds loosely, never as intent. (The Lurianic breaking-and-repair reading, and the ladder itself, live at [[Kabbalah - The Tree of Life]]; Roy minted the Lurianic layer as a Hall of Mirrors artifact, "David Star — Where The World Was Crossed.") > > Around the Kybalion, the influences Roy has named publicly cluster densest right here: Taoism (yin/yang, paired with light/dark constantly; the board transcribes the *Tao Te Ching* too); astrology (Gemini, his own Sun); Jung (he posted the Persona/Shadow/Self diagram, captioned "Soul Calibrator," in 2020); Walter Russell's cosmic pendulum ("The Law," 2020); and, mostly in a burst around the late-2025 "darkside" launch, a Western-esoteric shelf he named outright: Dion Fortune ("The shadow is not evil. It is power unrecognized and therefore misused"), Gurdjieff (the two-worlds struggle, and the "many I's" with no integrated center, a clean gloss on Lucius), Blavatsky, Israel Regardie ("if you face something that you fear and recognize it for what it is, you give it balance"), and Éliphas Lévi. He named the books; the correspondences they generate are harmonics the system permits, not claims it asserts. > > The visual mark has its tradition too: the ROSE / ESOR tattoo is the Rosy Cross built as a palindrome, and Roy glosses the symbol, "the rose is the heart revealed, the union of opposites, light and dark," then posts the Rosicrucian formula plainly: "the rose blooms in the center of the cross" (2026). And the *Jagwar* half of the name is grounded in Mayan mythology from his first interviews: the jaguar "looks into the souls of other people and then, in turn, can look back into itself. Humans are just mirrors for each other." > > (One spelling-echo the guide can't quite un-notice, held as nobody's claim but our own: in Hebrew the letters of בבל, *Babel,* are the same three consonants as לבב, *the heart,* reordered. A wink, not a key; the strict cipher once floated on it has been retired.) > [!mask]- The Pair With Faces (Roy and Lucius) > The root split wears two faces: [[Roy]] at the heart, [[Sir Lucius]] at the mind. Roy names Lucius plainly, on a 2025 TikTok, "the mind divorced from the heart," and on the *Lucius Lullaby* album the two are co-credited as distinct vocalists across most tracks. Read that billing carefully: the shared credit establishes that the shadow is structurally indispensable, not that the two poles are moral equals. Lucius can be necessary, generative, even partly illuminating, and still be a distorted, defensive, dangerous configuration. Hold all three of his registers at once: manipulation, shadow, and protective love. > > Roy's stated character map, given as direct project guidance in 2026, links the pair to their spheres: Roy to Netzach (Venus, the heart), Lucius to Hod (Mercury, the mind). Within the guide's Kabbalistic reading those are the feet of the two pillars, held in balance by the middle column, which makes "my mind must serve my heart" read like the pillar teaching in four words: Hod re-subordinated to Netzach. The links are grounded; the pillar-correspondence is the tradition talking. Roy gives the formulation plainly: "lucius is the mind. the mind is a tool, but that force can lead us astray if it is not subservient to the heart," and "these thoughts are not my own... what we fight we become." You don't win by fighting the voice; you win by stopping mistaking it for your own. And in [[The Interview]], when the Roy character states the thesis ("Our music is an exploration of light and dark"), Lucius fires back: "Your truth is one-sided." The mind accusing the heart of being half a story. He's not entirely wrong, which is the whole problem with him. > [!reading]- Backwards on Purpose (the Rorrim Ehtni principle) > The most literal duality in the project is a name written backwards. *"In the Mirror,"* reversed into **Rorrim Ehtni,** so the mirror reads it true and the rest of us get gibberish. It walks across two decades and three media: the pen name credited on two 2008-09 tracks from Roy's first band, Eye Alaska; mirror-writing at the foot of the "I'm 33" board, where the closing line only resolves once you flip it; and the one canonical reversal code in the [[The Mirror|Hall of Mirrors]], **RORRIM EHTNI LIVED,** which unlocks the room called *Devil in the Mirror.* > > The principle it enacts: what looks distorted from one angle is the true text from another. The inverted reading is sometimes the real one. That's the engine behind [[Inversion]], the move that keeps a form perfectly intact and only reverses its direction ("Fear = Prayer in Reverse," per the tattoo gloss). Which means inversion is detectable only from the inside, by one test: as you go deeper, do you feel more yourself, or less? > [!reading]- Where the Songs Run It > * **[[Down to You]]** (33, 2022) puts the split right in the lyric, "can't unwind it with your head on / so listen to your heart," proving the theology surfaced in the music years before it was dramatized as Roy vs Lucius. (It also rhymes with Joni Mitchell's own duality texts, her "Down To You" and the eagle-and-serpent of "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter"; candidate dialogues rather than proven citations, raised in plausibility because 33 already grounds Joni via her writer credit on *Soul Is A Star.*) > * **[[Bananas]]** (2026) strips the split to nursery language, "I wanna be Good, but it's fun to be Bad / I wanna be nice, but I always get mad," the shadow before it learns to scheme, and stages dissociation as a joke: "I hear voices in my mind I don't remember — Did I do that?" > * **[[Weirdness]]** compresses the ordering into a single pronoun. The line arrives as "your weirdness is the sunshine" and by the final chorus Roy has taken it into his own mouth: "my weirdness is my sunshine." Ownership claimed. The honest wrinkle stays on the table: the outro slides back to "your," so the shift proves the tension is held, not healed. And note what it says about Lucius: if his weirdness is *sunshine,* he is distorted light, not the absence of light, which is exactly why he can be re-subordinated rather than destroyed. > * **[[Welcome to the Circus]]** reads, in this guide's cross-page synthesis, as the Circle inverted: same shape, opposite vector and outcome. > [!warning]- Neither Merger nor Murder > Two counterfeit resolutions stand at the edges of this concept, and the work refuses both. > > The first is amputation: kill the mind, defeat the shadow, end the split. The catalogue never goes there. The mantra is "my mind must serve my heart," not "my mind must die"; Lucius isn't beaten in a duel, the hierarchy is put back in order. > > The second is merger: dissolve the two into a sameness where the difference stops mattering. Naming the aim as *polarity* forecloses this one too, but notice it forecloses *merger,* not integration. Integration is the goal; merger is its counterfeit. Poles are two aspects of one thing, so their unity is already given: the live question is never whether they are one but whether they are held in balance. Wire the poles together until no difference is left and you don't get union, you get a dead battery. So the arc, on this guide's best reading, is the two held in right relation and balance, never a funeral for one pole and never a wedding that erases the charge between them. > > One honesty check travels with the reading: "ordering, not elimination" is strongly supported for the heart/mind pair. Applied to the entire mythology it is an extrapolation, the page's best reading of the arc rather than a law over every pair. The fractal holds from a single tattoo to the species, on this lens. > > The discipline that keeps the lens honest: adopting Roy's heart-vs-mind self-account *as the analytic frame* risks circularity, describing Roy in Roy's vocabulary. The split may be partly a deliberate two-character artistic device rather than literal interior architecture, and even the "clean" heart-pole may be a constructed thing, the Roy character a mask too. That doesn't break the reading; it sharpens it. Hold it without over-literalizing it. > [!question]- What It Won't Answer > Is the duality generative or pathological? Roy seems to *need* Lucius to function; the project may not exist without the split (the heart-pole alone would read flat, which is the whole reason Lucius gets a microphone). So is Lucius being **redeemed**, his distorted light reclaimed and put back in service, or **retired**, the split healed and the construct dissolved? The catalogue holds both open, and that fork sits downstream of the era's biggest question: does the *Lucius Lullaby* arc actually resolve, loop opening into circle, or end with Lucius still the final boss? > > Is heart/mind even the only pair? Roy/Mary (masculine/feminine) and Roy/Ballerina Boy (adult/child) are dualities too, and nothing says they resolve the same way; subordination may be the heart/mind answer, not the universal one. Roy also complicates two-ness himself: on an IG Live he sketches a third faculty above instinct and intellect, "the intuition... the god voice," two held and transcended by a third rather than collapsed into one. Is the Twin's polarity quietly missing a *named* light-source the two-character frame can't hold? The honest counterweight is in the name itself: Jagwar *Twin.* Two, not three. And if the split is purely a two-character artistic device, reading it as literal interior architecture over-reaches. Both falsifiers stay on the table.
