# Move To You
> **One-line reading.** [[The Thread]] stated as a love song — navigation by the heartbeat when every fixed star has failed, and the quiet rebuttal to the idea that vulnerability is weakness.

## At a glance
- **Era / release** — [[Subject to Flooding]], 2018; track 7 of 13. Roy's stated favorite on the album.
- **In one line** — When the maps break, the heart becomes the instrument you steer by; and the reciprocal hook — *"it moves to me, I move to you"* — is the whole ethic of the later mythology, stated years early.
- **Who speaks** — [[Roy]], unguarded and relational. The figure who haunts it by contrast is [[Sir Lucius]], who — eight years later, in the theatrical *Interview* — singles this song out to bury it.
- **Key symbols** — [[The Thread]] · the heartbeat · the stars · [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|the Circle]] · the child
## The song, mapped
A compact two-verse pop architecture that carries its entire argument in a single move repeated twice: *love is a question, not an answer.* No bridge. The chorus never changes; the verses do the work, and the only thing that shifts between them is **how** the question is held — *chose*, then *know*.
| Section | The beat | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| **Verse 1** | *"I can tell you what it's like to be in love / And the way it feels to lose"* → *"Love's a question… not an answer from above… a question that you chose"* | Opens by claiming both sides — the person who knows love *and* loss is the one worth trusting on it. Then **refusal #1**: love is not a decree handed down *"from above."* It's **chosen**. |
| **Pre-Chorus** | four *"Something…"* clauses — *"Something like a feeling…"* → *"…Something that I know"* | The clauses file love under the **felt and known** (*feeling*, *believe in*, *know*), not the shown and proven (*"hard to show"*). Feeling over display — the whole song's value system in four lines. |
| **Chorus** | *"Even if the stars are out of place / Even if I'm lost along the way / I can hear your heart, it beats / It moves to me / I move to you"* | The engine. Two *"Even if"* failures of the **external coordinates** (the stars, the map), answered by the one instrument left — the heartbeat — and resolved into **reciprocal motion**. |
| **Post-Chorus** | *"Na na na na…"* + *"I move to you"* | Language drops out to pure vocable. Only the mutual-movement phrase survives the wordlessness — the pre-verbal "answer," foreshadowing the wordless [[SOL]] seven years out. |
| **Verse 2** | *"I can tell you what it's like to be a kid / And the way it feels to grow"* → *"Love's a question… not an answer that you give… a question that you know"* | The **childhood** turn. Then **refusal #2**: love is not a position you *assert* (*"that you give"*). The verb shifts from **chose** to **know** — the same question, now lived rather than picked. |
| **Outro** | truncated chorus, closing on the doubled *"I move to you / I move to you"* | The song ends on the hook, **never on a resolution.** The form enacts its own thesis: question, not answer. |
Two things about that table earn a second look. First, the verse pairing is deliberate: Verse 1 is **adult** love (*"in love" / "to lose"*), Verse 2 is the **child** (*"to be a kid" / "to grow"*) — adulthood and childhood hung on the same refrain. Second, the two versions of the *"Love's a question"* line (*from above / that you chose* vs *that you give / that you know*) are **intentional, not a transcription slip** — verified against the stable Apple Music lyric. The song refuses to define its subject, and then refuses *again*, differently. That's the argument.
## What it means
**Love as a question, refused twice.** The two refusals do different jobs. *"Not an answer from above"* refuses **dogma** — love isn't a rule handed down by authority. *"Not an answer that you give"* refuses **ideology** — love isn't a stance you plant a flag on. Strip both away and what's left is love as living inquiry: something you *chose* (Verse 1), then *know* (Verse 2). Oriented, never answered. It is, almost exactly, Roy's *Y* tattoo written as a love song — he glosses the *Y* on his elbow as *"because you've gotta ask the question,"* and the song shares its architecture: question held open, answer withheld, orientation offered.
**The heart as navigator — [[The Thread]] in its purest early form.** The structural crisis is a navigation crisis. The stars are fixed external coordinates — fate, the map, the plan — and the radical claim is that when they fail, navigation *still holds*, because *"I can hear your heart, it beats."* Note what that isn't: it isn't the ordinary love-song move where the beloved is the **destination**. Here the heart is the **compass**. Feeling becomes *more* reliable than the sky. That's the Thread — the line you follow through the dark when every other guide has gone out, [[Concepts/Source vs Reflection|the return to the source]] made audible as a pulse.
**The structural anti-*[[Superhuman|Superhuman]]*.** The track order is doing something. Track 6, [[Superhuman]], is ascent by force — the martial *"we,"* the sealed perimeter, *try to be more.* Track 7 is its exact inverse: no armor, no march, no *more* — just *"it moves to me, I move to you."* Where *Superhuman* tries to **overpower** the human condition, *Move To You* simply **orients** within it. Same album, opposite verbs.
**A Circle, not a Loop.** *"It moves to me, I move to you"* is reciprocal motion — two centers closing distance, not pursuit or conquest or possession. That mutuality is the geometry of a **circle** (two points in living relation), never a **loop** (closed, mechanical, self-referential). And this isn't only a structural inference: in the *Subject to Flooding* press cycle, talking about *this very song*, Roy named the doctrine aloud — *"there is no beginning and no end, it's just a circle"* — the **earliest documented naming of the Circle**, three years before [[33|*33*]] and the entire Lucius/Circus mythology built it into a keystone. Roy has since made the origin claim explicit — asked in 2024 what a new listener should hear first, he answered *"The Circle is Jagwar Twin's Genesis story"* — which makes the keystone-as-origin reading his own, not just ours. The song didn't inherit the Circle. It **seeded** it. (See [[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle]].)
**The keystone: "vulnerability loses," said by the villain, about this song.** The cleanest place in the whole catalogue where the Roy/Lucius value-split gets *voiced by Lucius himself* is [[The Interview]] EP3. He files *Move To You* under "the loop" — [[Loser]] → *Move To You* → [[Happy Face]] — sneers *"does anyone remember Move To You?"* (the stage direction is *echoes, crow calling* — the forgotten-flop joke made audible), and lands the verdict: *"when you're vulnerable, you LOSE."* Crucially, the burial happens amid **absurdist farce, not menace**: Lucius mimes ballet while naming the "lowest-performing song of all time" (*Ballerina Boy*), needles Roy for dressing "like a… yeti" (Roy: *"the fuzziness of it looks good on you"*), and dispenses each new "hit" by pressing a browning banana in the fruit bowl like a button. The verdict lands as comedy, which is the point — it's a clown delivering the metric, not a tyrant. Here's the thing — **he isn't factually wrong that it underperformed.** He's measuring an open, chosen, unguarded act with a streams-and-reach ruler. The exact register the song calls the *only reliable navigation left*, he calls losing. The villain's-eye-view confirms the song's worth by despising it — and the deepest cut is that the song he singles out to bury is the precise one where Roy *first named the Circle.* The shadow's designated dead weight is the cosmology's origin point.
**It arrived, it wasn't written.** Roy has framed the song's making two ways, both grounded. In 2018: *"Move to You was like a download, I didn't really write it… it felt given to me. I heard it all at once and scrambled to voice memo all the music, lyrics, and melodies out."* In 2020, looking back: *"it was a conversation with God."* He wrote it *lost* — *"I felt so lost when I wrote Move To You. I felt like I was never going to make it in music"* — cut the vocals in Florence and Joshua Tree, and calls the result *"a prayer to and from the universe."* A prayer received, not composed.
## Characters
- **[[Roy]]** — unguarded, feeling-led, relational. He writes the song lost, receives it as a download / prayer / conversation with God, and — eight years later in [[The Interview]] EP3 — defends it: music has to come from the soul, and *"love is the ultimate truth… when I move from that place, nothing can stop me."*
- **[[Sir Lucius]]** — the optimizer, the shadow, "the algorithm." Not present as a named figure in 2018 (the mythology hadn't been built yet), but he arrives in EP3 — in clown makeup, miming ballet, working the fruit bowl — to write *Move To You* off as a forgettable "ballad" and deliver *"when you're vulnerable, you LOSE."* He's right about the stream count and wrong about everything that matters — measuring [[Kabbalah - The Tree of Life|a Tiferet act with a Yesod ruler]] (see Advanced reading).
- **The child / the buried self** — surfaces in Verse 2's couplet (*"what it's like to be a kid… the way it feels to grow"*). Read it as the tender self permitted to speak in its own voice because the reciprocal, non-possessive love of the hook is finally **safe** enough to let it return — the exact inverse of [[Ballerina Boy]], where the child is interred behind perfect-child armor.
- **The people in the credits** — real collaborators, not narrative figures, but worth naming because the song is a genuinely co-made object: **S1** (Larry Darnell Griffin Jr.) co-wrote and exec-produced; **Michael Morgan** co-produced; **Jeff Ellis** mixed. One quiet point rides on S1's credit: it lands in **2018**, before any Lucius or Circus architecture exists — the theme entered the work years before the mythology was there to frame it. The seed predates the story that later reads it.

## Symbols
- **[[The Thread]]** — feeling as the navigation line when the stars fail; the song's whole architecture, and the Thread's grounded home in the *Subject to Flooding* era.
- **The heartbeat** — the one instrument left once the fixed coordinates are gone (*"I can hear your heart, it beats"*).
- **The stars** — the external coordinates (fate, the map) that fail (*"out of place"*). A node in a catalogue-wide arc (see below).
- **[[Concepts/The Loop and the Circle|The Circle]]** — reciprocal motion as the geometry of two points in living relation, versus the closed self-referential loop. First named here, in 2018.
- **The child** — the buried self surfacing because the love is safe enough to permit its return.
- **Non-lexical vocable** — the *"Na na na"* post-chorus: language dropping to pure voice, the pre-verbal answer that [[SOL]] eventually makes into a whole album.
## Connected songs
- **[[Superhuman]]** (track 6) — the direct 6→7 pairing: ascent-by-force versus orientation-by-heart. *Move To You* is the structural anti-*Superhuman*.
- **[[The Circle]]** (2022) — the keystone whose doctrine Roy *first speaks aloud* in this song's 2019 interview. *Move To You* is the Circle's earliest documented naming.
- **[[Happy Face]]** (2022) — the Loop keystone. EP3's loop runs [[Loser]] → *Move To You* → *Happy Face*; *Happy Face* is what you get when the Circle doesn't stream. The turn that yields it is the same turn where the Circle-song "fails."
- **[[Ballerina Boy]]** — the co-exhibit in Lucius's EP3 "vulnerability loses" case, and the child-contrast: child interred behind armor there, child safely returning here.
- **[[SOL]]** (2025) — *Move To You* is its textual ancestor. *"Love's a question"* (2018) becomes *"love is a question — everyone's guessing, everyone knows"* (SOL). See the compression reading below.
- **[[Soul Is A Star]]** (2022) — the call-and-answer partner. *"Even if the stars are out of place"* (2018) is answered by *"your soul is a star"* (2022): navigate by the one star that can't be out of place.
- **[[No Fake Friends]]** (track 8) — the next node in the stars arc (*"looked down at my stars,"* flattened into the Hollywood Walk of Fame); sequenced right after the album's defensive tracks.
- **[[LOOP]]** (2025) — stars-arc node (*"the stars in the sky conspired"*), fate-as-trap — the dark mirror of stars merely *out of place.*
- **[[I Like to Party]]** — the "whose drum you move to" allegiance motif: the heart's true beat here sits against the Piper's beat and the inherited dread-drum.
- **[[Loser]]** (track 3) — the radio single whose reach Lucius contrasts against this "ballad" in EP3; co-subject of the 2018 and 2019 interviews.
- **[[Shine]]** (track 13) — grouped with *Move To You* in Roy's own per-song framings.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the STARS arc across the whole catalogue *(tap to open)*
> The catalogue runs a consistent devaluation of the **external** star and enthronement of the **internal** one:
> - *Move To You* (2018) — *"stars out of place"* → **misplaced**
> - [[No Fake Friends|N.F.F.]] (2018) — *"looked down at my stars"* → **walked on** (flattened into the Hollywood Walk of Fame)
> - [[LOOP]] (2025) — *"the stars conspired"* → **fate-trap**
> - [[Soul Is A Star]] (2022) — *"your soul is a star"* → **relocated inward**
>
> The direct call-and-answer: *"even if the stars are out of place"* (2018) is answered four years later by *"your soul is a star"* (2022). The cure for a misplaced sky is to navigate by the one star that cannot be out of place — the one you carry.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the SOL compression: explanation → paradox → breath *(tap to open)*
> Between 2018 and 2025 the *"love's a question"* idea **compresses**. *Move To You* still *explains* it (*"I can tell you what it's like to be in love"*). [[SOL]] *contemplates* it (*"everyone's guessing, everyone knows"*). And the wordless album completes the reduction: paradox becomes pure voice. **Explanation → paradox → breath/beat.** The point is that *Move To You already supplies the answer SOL embodies* — the reply to "love's a question" is never propositional, it's **response**: one heart moving another (*"it moves to me / I move to you"*). Pre-verbal, and already there in 2018. The *"Na na na"* post-chorus is the seed of the wordless album seven years before it exists.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the reciprocal hook as Genesis 33, and the tie to *33* *(tap to open)*
> *"It moves to me, I move to you"* is [[Concepts/Jacob and Esau]] in miniature — the reconciliation of Genesis 33:4, where Esau runs, Jacob bows, **both** move, the distance closes, and the rupture heals. The estranged twins are restored not by one winning but by **mutual movement** — which is the same integration grammar the whole [[33|*33*]] album is named after. *Move To You* is that grammar stated as a love song, years before the album that formalizes it. Reciprocity as the shape of *healing*, not just the shape of *love*.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — Tiferet against Yesod (Kabbalistic frame) *(tap to open)*
> A framework-attributed reading, not a claim about Roy's stated method. On the [[Kabbalah - The Tree of Life|Tree of Life]], the song invokes **Tiferet** — the radiant heart-center on the middle pillar, mediating beauty, alignment embodied on the central axis. The lyric's refusal *"not an answer from above"* is *itself* a Tiferet move: alignment lived on the axis, not a distant emanation passively received. Its antagonist-by-proxy is **Yesod** — [[Sir Lucius|Lucius's]] register, the lunar machinery of image and metric. EP3 is Yesod judging Tiferet and finding it unprofitable; the song's existence is Tiferet declining to answer to that court. The system permits the resonance; it doesn't assert Roy intends the label.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the buried child's safe return (Jungian frame) *(tap to open)*
> Verse 2's child couplet lets the tender self narrate in its **own** voice rather than stay buried under persona — the structural opposite of [[Ballerina Boy]], where the child is interred behind perfect-child armor. Read it as the buried child surfacing *because the environment is finally safe*: the reciprocal, non-possessive love of the hook is the safety that permits the return. In this frame the Thread isn't only navigation — it's what makes the child's return possible at all. (The "whose drum you move to" motif in [[I Like to Party]] sharpens it: the true heartbeat here is the drum you *want* to march to, against the Piper's beat and the inherited dread-drum.)
## Lyrics
```
[Verse 1]
I can tell you what it's like to be in love
And the way it feels to lose
Love's a question
Not an answer from above
Love's a question that you chose
[Pre-Chorus]
Something like a feeling
Something hard to show
Something to believe in
Something that I know
[Chorus]
Even if the stars are out of place
Even if I'm lost along the way
I can hear your heart, it beats
It moves to me
I move to you
Even if the stars are out of place
Even if I'm lost along the way
I can hear your heart, it beats
It moves to me
I move to you
I move to you
[Post-Chorus]
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
I move to you
I move to you
[Verse 2]
I can tell you what it's like to be a kid
And the way it feels to grow
Love's a question
Not an answer that you give
Love's a question that you know
[Pre-Chorus]
Something like a feeling
Something hard to show
Something to believe in
Something that I know
[Chorus]
Even if the stars are out of place
Even if I'm lost along the way
I can hear your heart, it beats
It moves to me
I move to you
Even if the stars are out of place
Even if I'm lost along the way
I can hear your heart, it beats
It moves to me
I move to you
I move to you
[Post-Chorus]
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
I move to you
I move to you
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
I move to you
I move to you
[Outro]
Even if the stars are out of place
Even if I'm lost along the way
I can hear your heart, it beats
It moves to me
I move to you
I move to you
```
## Source notes
- **Grounded (released music, Roy's own words, public posts).** Credits and track placement (track 7 of 13 on [[Subject to Flooding]]; written by Roy English & S1; produced by Roy English, Michael Morgan & S1; exec-produced by S1; mixed by Jeff Ellis; mastered by Chris Gehringer — Apple Music and Spotify Credits, verified May 2026). The two deliberate verse-variants of *"Love's a question"* (Apple Music, stable). Roy's framings: *"like a download… it felt given to me"* (Atwood Magazine, 2018); *"a prayer to and from the universe,"* the felt-lost origin, Florence + Joshua Tree, favorite-on-album, **and the earliest naming of the Circle** — *"there is no beginning and no end, it's just a circle"* (Digital Journal, 2019); *"it was a conversation with God"* (The Honey Pop, 2020). Lucius's EP3 burial and *"when you're vulnerable, you LOSE"* ([[The Interview]] EP3, published Jan 2026). The *"love's a question"* formulation *recurring* in [[SOL]] (2025).
- **Strong readings.** Love-refused-twice (dogma, then ideology); the heart-as-compass; the anti-*Superhuman* track pairing; Circle-not-Loop (the *naming* is grounded, the geometric elaboration is interpretive); the Genesis-33 reading of the hook; the keystone reading that Lucius buries the very song where the Circle is born; the STARS arc and the *Move To You* → *Soul Is A Star* call-and-answer; the SOL compression arc; the buried-child return. Grounded in the material, but interpretive — labeled as such.
- **Framework (esoteric, syncretic — never authorial intent).** The Tiferet-versus-Yesod mapping and the Jungian buried-child frame. The system permits these resonances; it does not assert Roy intends them.
- **How we'd be wrong.** The mythology was **not** preplanned in 2018, and Lucius is **not** a named 2018 character — the honest formulation is that *the soil contains the seed, but the evidence cannot determine how consciously it was planted.* If the plain "feeling as the line you follow" reading accounts for the song as well as the esoteric apparatus does, the apparatus is decorative. (One open thread for a close listen: does the arrangement physically foreground a heartbeat/pulse motif that *"I can hear your heart, it beats"* names literally?)
