# Weirdness
> **One-line reading.** The song where Roy stops treating his weirdness as something outside himself and starts claiming it as the source of his own light. The whole movement lives in one pronoun — *your* weirdness becoming *my* weirdness. It isn't a self-acceptance anthem so much as a reclamation.

Here is one of the catalogue's quiet miracles: a song about being too strange to belong that turns out to be co-written with **Sia** — one of the biggest names in pop — and born, per Roy, from a real thing Sia actually said to him when he was low. The line that opens the whole album's one bright track came in as a gift from a friend. It is exactly the sort of receipt that makes the myth feel less like a costume and more like a diary.
> 🚪 *One bright song on a whole dark album reads less like an accident and more like a recipe: the old alchemists said you go black before you go gold. The rest of the record seems to be [[Concepts/Nigredo|the blackening]], and the open question is whether the Circus ever lets it turn.*
## At a glance
- **Era / release** — *Lucius Lullaby*, March 27 2026; the rollout's own visual precursor is *[[The Interview|The Spoon EP 4]]* (Feb 17 2026), whose closing lines *are* this song's intro.
- **In one line** — the buried, exiled strangeness comes home and is renamed as light.
- **Who speaks** — [[Roy]], mostly — but he opens in [[Sir Lucius|Lucius]]'s words and ends in his own. A faceless, [[Mary]]-class blessing-voice cuts in twice.
- **Key symbols** — the sun · [[The Mask]] · [[The Mirror]] · [[The Thread]] · [[The Green Apple]] (from the EP that seeds it).
## The song, mapped
Nine short sections, and the trick of the whole thing is how little changes between the first chorus and the last. Following its own shape:
| Section | In the song | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| **Intro** | *"Your weirdness is the sunshine / it shines on everything"* (+ scat) | Opens in **Lucius's register** — these are the *EP4* lines, Lucius's words handed back to Roy. Sets the *"your"* pole and the *"shines on everything"* refrain. |
| **Verse 1** | *"When I was just a young one, I danced in the rain / life was a joke, a fun one / now I'm in pain"* | The **childhood wound**: pre-shame freedom collapsing to *"now I'm in pain."* The joy was real *before* it became the injury. |
| **Pre-chorus (1st)** | *"Thinking I should end it lately / then I saw a little light / she looked like an angel, baby / but her face was out of sight"* → *"stop pretending, baby / you were born to shine"* | The **suicidal floor**, and the intervention. A faceless blessing-figure arrives and cancels the lie. First of **two identical** appearances. |
| **Chorus 1** | *"Your weirdness is the sunshine"* · *"Your head is off its string"* | Liberation already *stated* — but still attributed outward, in the *"your."* |
| **Verse 2** | *"I grew up fast as lightning / I changed my name / no other child was like me / why am I this way?"* | The **identity / industry wound**, and the catalogue's plainest lyric anchor for the [[Roy]]→Jagwar Twin name-change. Note the tense-slip: *"was like me"* (past) into *"why am I this way?"* (present) — wound closed, question still open. |
| **Pre-chorus (2nd)** | *— verbatim repeat —* | The angel returns at the **second** breaking point. She's persistent, not situational; the doubling is the structural proof of the recurring-presence reading. |
| **Bridge** | *"You're weird / and that's alright / you know you're strange / and that's alright"* | The plainest, almost shrugging statement — deliberately flat against the grand chorus. The hinge before the flip. |
| **Chorus 2 (the turn)** | *"And now I know that all my weirdness is my sunshine"* · *"My head is off its string"* | Same melody, same *"off its string"* state. The **only** change is *your* → *my.* The entire integration compressed into one possessive. |
| **Outro** | scat + *"it shines on everything"* → *"Your weirdness is the sunshine"* | **Reverts to *"your."*** The song ends in the register it began; the *"my"*-claim is bracketed, not the last word. |
So the argument moves: **projection** (intro / C1, *"your"*) → **wounding** (V1, V2) → **blessing, twice** (the doubled pre-chorus) → **plain acceptance** (bridge) → **ownership** (C2, *"my"*) → **back to projection** (outro). The famous *"off its string"* liberation, notably, never moves at all. It's constant the whole way through.
> [!note]- Where the intro comes from — *The Spoon* (EP4), the joke that carries the theology
> The song begins exactly where a scene in the visual lore ends. In *[[The Interview|The Spoon EP 4]]* ("weirdness," Feb 17 2026), Roy is staring — shirtless, draped in chains, sunglasses, big wired headphones — *into a spoon*, as if it were profound. [[Sir Lucius]] wanders up childlike, eating a **green apple**, and heckles him. It plays as deadpan comedy:
> > **Lucius:** *"You're very strange."* — **Roy** (not looking up): *"What?"* — **Lucius:** *"You're very strange."* — **Roy:** *"Says the rabbit clown. What even ARE you?"* — **Lucius:** *"I'm your weirdness."* (*bites the apple*) — **Roy:** *"Your weirdness is the sunshine."* — **Lucius:** *"I'll take that."* (*walks off*)
> Then the music starts. The most consequential exchange in the arc is delivered as absurdist banter between a man and his heckling shadow — and Lucius's petty little *"I'll take that,"* claim-jumping Roy's earnest line, keeps him perfectly in character as the light-thief even mid-blessing. That's the whole point: the reversal doesn't announce itself. It arrives disguised as a bit.
## What it means
A few claims that cut across the whole song.
**The pronoun *is* the plot.** Everything hinges on the move from *"your weirdness"* to *"my weirdness"* — projection (attributed outward, in Lucius's mouth) becoming ownership (first person, fully claimed). This is the plainest, most grounded reading available, and the lyric carries it by itself. No framework required.
**It's a reclamation, not an affirmation.** The song never says *"you're normal after all."* It says something stranger and better: *you are not normal, and that may be exactly where the light gets in.* The bridge's flat little *"you're weird / and that's alright"* isn't the destination — it's the shrug before the real move, which is possessive.
**The freedom was always there.** Because *both* choruses say the head is *"off its string,"* the song is not a journey from being controlled to being free. It's a journey from **not knowing the freedom was yours to knowing it.** The string — the control system, the algorithm, the audience-dependency — was never really the puppet-master it claimed to be. (It plays against [[The Circle]]'s *"a world tied on a string"*: same image, opposite verdict.)
**And the biggest one — for the whole arc:** if Lucius says *"I'm your weirdness,"* and *"your weirdness is the sunshine,"* then [[Sir Lucius|Lucius]] is not the *absence* of light. He's **distorted light** — the split-off radiance of the buried child, running under the wrong orientation, reflected outward as spectacle and control instead of transmitted as love. That reframes the endgame of the entire project. Integration can't be won by *defeating* Lucius, and it isn't won by *becoming* or *surrendering* to him either. Roy has to **reclaim what Lucius has been holding.** Not *your* weirdness — *my* weirdness. The light comes home. (This is developed in full under [[Concepts/The Light-Bearer]].)
## Characters
- **[[Roy]]** — the speaker; the one reclaiming the split-off self. His voicing literally opens in Lucius's register (*"your"*) and lands fully in his own (*"my"*). *"I changed my name"* is the strongest explicit Roy English → Jagwar Twin anchor in the catalogue.
- **[[Sir Lucius]]** — present in his **pleading mode** (*"I'm your weirdness"*) — the childlike, dependent, emotionally real layer that the prophet and clown modes exist to defend. It's the moment he names his own function, and the song is Roy's answer to it.
- **[[Mary]]** (Mary-class) — the faceless angel of the pre-chorus: *"looked like an angel, baby / but her face was out of sight."* Same face-out-of-sight blessing-voice as the [[Ballerina Boy]] outro and *[[No. 1 Champion (la Conquistadora)]]* (where Mary is named outright). She never flatters. She only ever tells the truth about the light — and she comes at *both* crises, not one.
- **Real collaborators (not symbols).** Worth stating plainly, because the album is careful about this: **Sia** co-wrote *and* sings background — and is, per Roy, the real-life origin of the hook. **MERCY** (Mercedes Colletta Britton) and **Haley Schae** sing background. **Matthew Pauling** — the *33*-era core — co-writes, produces, and plays much of it. **Dale Becker** masters. These are people, not ciphers. (In particular: *angelbaby*, Roy's actual AI/virtual collaborator elsewhere in the catalogue, is **not** the *"angel, baby"* voice in this song.)
## Artifacts

## Symbols
- **The sun / sunshine** — the central image and the reclaimed radiance. The solar cluster (*sunshine, shine, light, born to*) is the song's whole vocabulary. *"It shines on everything."*
- **[[The Mask]]** — what *"stop pretending"* dissolves. And note *what* is being pretended: not false intimacy but **false diminishment** — the pretense *that you are not light.*
- **[[The Mirror]]** — the Lucius signature running **in reverse.** Where Lucius reflects the false world back at Roy, the angel reflects the true one.
- **[[The Thread]]** — *"your / my head is off its string."* The string that was never really holding; the deeper note underneath it is *the head is no longer the master* — mind made to serve heart.
- **[[The Green Apple]]** — not in the song, but all over its origin scene. In EP4 Lucius eats it *early,* while saying *"I'm your weirdness"* — the premature mind, fruit taken at the wrong time; the exchange the altar was built for, performed wrongly. (Its overripe opposite, the browning [[The Banana|banana]] Lucius plays his hits off, sits one EP away.)
## Connected songs
- **[[Ballerina Boy]]** — the **wound-song** to this healing-song. Ballerina Boy is the burial; Weirdness begins the exhumation. The child dancing in the rain here *is* the ballerina there — and Ballerina Boy's motherly outro (*"let your light shine," "there's no one else like you"*) is the same blessing-voice, answering Weirdness's *"you were born to shine."*
- **[[Not Your Homie]]** — anti-pretense, **mirrored.** There, Lucius says *"let's not pretend"* to enforce distance; here the angel says *"stop pretending"* to dissolve the mask. Same phrase, opposite vector — and Weirdness silently answers Not Your Homie's commercial bargain (*"this is what the people want / it doesn't mean anything"*) with its opposite: your uncategorizable part may be the point.
- **[[Welcome to the Circus]]** — the **public** performance of the Lucius system; Weirdness is the **private** threshold that counters it.
- **[[No. 1 Champion (la Conquistadora)]]** — where [[Mary]] is **named**; the same figure who appears faceless here. On the album these are the two turning points: #1 Champion the first *crack* (Mary unseats the ego), Weirdness the first *crossing.*
- **[[SOL]]** — the love-current beneath the weirdness; the song Lucius can't metabolize. The album's wordless destination (14) that follows this turn (13).
- **[[Shine]]** (2018) — the **seed** of the whole *"shine"* blessing-vocabulary, where the verb is still first-person and communal (*"gonna shine, shine, shine"*) before the blessing-voice later redirects it outward into a second-person benediction. (Shine is the *seed*, not a Mary appearance — worth keeping distinct.)
- **[[MAGIK]]** (2025) — Weirdness's **sibling in the blessing-voice cluster** and the mode's purest statement: predating the album's descent, it hands [[Shine]]'s first-person claim fully outward (*"everything you do is Magik"*) — the same benediction Weirdness lands as *"you were born to shine."*
- **[[Lucius Lullaby]]** (title track) — shares the suicidal floor-register with Weirdness's pre-chorus, and stages the counterfeit: its *"set you free / magic mirror"* savior-voice is Lucius *impersonating* the Mary-function — which is exactly what sharpens the **real** faceless-Mary here.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the album's single point of light (nigredo → albedo)
> On the phase-map, Weirdness is the album's **one exception.** Thirteen of *Lucius Lullaby*'s fourteen distinct tracks read as [[Concepts/Nigredo|nigredo]] — a sustained blackening — and Weirdness is the sole track that turns toward **albedo**, first light, return, the crossing. The album is, on this reading, "a sustained blackening with one late turn": #1 Champion (8) is the first crack; Weirdness (13) is the first successful crossing; SOL (14) the wordless destination; the acoustic *Bad Feeling* (15) loops back to Lucius. Two honest caveats travel with this: it's *one* upbeat track carrying a lot of interpretive weight, and the plainer reading (below) is genuinely available.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — alchemy, Jung, Gnosis, and the Tree of Life
> Four attributed correspondences, none of them a claim about stated intent — but all coherent with the material and with authors Roy names publicly (Jung, Kierkegaard, Watts).
>
> **Alchemical.** The transmutation runs in three steps: **shame → weirdness → sunshine.** The *prima materia* is precisely the despised, embarrassing, rejected substance everyone treats as waste — and you work with *that* until the gold shows. Lucius is the blackened prima materia not yet transmuted; the song is the moment the process begins.
>
> **Jungian (individuation / shadow).** Roy exiled his strangeness early; it became the raw material Lucius was built to protect. Integration *recognizes what the shadow was carrying* rather than destroying it — which is why the song ends on ownership, not erasure. The shadow isn't defeated. It's known.
>
> **Gnostic.** The conformity-machine is an illusion that teaches the soul to forget itself; inside it the strange person looks defective, but from above the strangeness is the divine spark showing through the cracks. The faceless angel resembles **Sophia** — and her message gives no *new* information; it cancels the false information that was suppressing the real. That's the structure of *gnosis*: not addition, but the lifting of a lie. (A family resemblance to Mary / Shekhinah, **not** an equation — the three shouldn't collapse into one.) See [[Concepts/The Sacred Truths/Gnosticism - The World as Trap]].
>
> **Kabbalistic.** [[Sir Lucius|Lucius]] works the **Yesod** register (lunar, reflective, audience-dependent); [[Ballerina Boy]] lives between Malkhut and Yesod. Weirdness orients toward **Tiferet**, the solar heart-center — every keyword (*sunshine, shine, light, born to*) is solar. Not Tiferet *achieved*: the *first genuine solar movement* after a long lunar passage. Reflected weirdness → owned weirdness → the beginning of solar weirdness. See [[Kabbalah - The Tree of Life]].
> [!note]- Advanced reading — weirdness as the "vowel principle," and the algorithm it resists
> A [[Letters of Creation|tradition-correspondence]] (Abulafia / niqqud), explicitly **not** presented as Roy's stated method: vowels = the living breath, activation, spirit; consonants = dead, fixed structure. Weirdness is the *vowel* — the breath that refuses to be flattened. The algorithm wants repeatability, categorization, compression, a marketable identity — and weirdness resists every one of those *because it is alive.* The uncategorizable part of you may be your divine signature: the exact inverse of the [[Not Your Homie]] bargain (*"it doesn't mean anything"*). This belongs in the reader's toolkit as attributed framework only — never as authorial intent.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the pronoun that won't sit still (the Speaker Problem)
> Weirdness's *your → my* is one instance of a catalogue-wide device: a [[Concepts/The Speaker Problem|deliberately unfixable second person]] (also in [[LOOP]], Bad Feeling, [[Bounce]], [[Ballerina Boy]]). The pronoun that keeps sliding enacts, at the level of grammar, the grounded doctrine that *humans are mirrors for each other* — and it's why the outro's reversion to *"your"* refuses to settle into a single meaning. (See [[Concepts/Duality]] for the pronoun-shift as integrated grammar.)
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the dedication that became a benediction
> A direction-of-travel finding on the faceless feminine. In 2018 Roy dedicates songs **to** the faceless — they *receive* care (*"this one's for the faceless,"* Long Time Coming). By 2025–26 the faceless one **gives** the blessing (the [[Ballerina Boy]] outro, Weirdness, *[[No. 1 Champion (la Conquistadora)]]*). The dedication returns as benediction: object-of-care becomes source-of-care. Best held as a *function* swap, not a literal identity — don't over-personify it.
## The rollout (public paratext)
The campaign is unusually legible, and it doubles as an argument for the song. Across February–June 2026 the official [@jagwartwin](https://tiktok.com) feed ran a steady drip of **#weirdness** quote-cards, each pairing an aphorism about strangeness with the track — a public philosophy syllabus for the thesis. Documented:
- **Carl Jung** — *"The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are"* (Feb 18)
- **Kierkegaard** — *"Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom"* (Feb 20)
- **Lao Tzu** — *"Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner"* (Feb 28)
- **Dr. Seuss** — *"Why fit in when you were born to stand out"* (Mar 11)
- **Japanese proverb** — *"The nail that sticks out gets hammered down. That's why I became a hammer"* (Mar 12) — the proverb flipped into a flex
- **Rudolf Steiner** — *"The house of the soul is built by thought"* (Apr 8)
- **ROY** — *"If you feel like a mistake you must be mistaken"* (May 6)
- **Bible, Revelation 3:16** — *"Be not lukewarm"* (Jun 19)
Plus the pre-save teaser (*"ROY no longer seems to be interested in releasing new music. Instead he turns his attention to a spoon… Whose side are you?"* — staging the Roy-vs-Lucius rivalry as a fan-loyalty poll), an [Alan Watts](https://youtube.com) tie-in from the *Not Your Homie* window (*"real friends let friends be weird"*), and, at release, the flat *"Your weirdness is the ☀️."*
And the piece of paratext that grounds it all: on TikTok (Apr 29 2026), Roy told the origin plainly — *"A while back I was feeling down and like I didn't fit in anywhere. Sia told me 'your weirdness is the sunshine.' And this song was born."* In the same window he was public about the rock-bottom the song dramatizes: *"turned 35 and I found myself as a struggling artist who couldn't afford groceries or rent and had to move back in with my parents… signed and dropped by multiple major labels."* The *"now I'm in pain"* is not a pose. It has an address.
## Lyrics
```
[Intro]
Your weirdness is the sunshine
(Ba ba ba ba)
Ooh
Your weirdness is the sunshine
It shines on everything
Your weirdness is the sunshine
Ooh
(Ba ba ba ba)
[Verse 1]
When I was just a young one
I danced in the rain
Life was a joke, a fun one
Now I'm in pain
[Pre-Chorus]
Thinking I should end it lately
Then I saw a little light
She looked like an angel, baby
But her face was out of sight
She said, "Stop pretending, baby
You were born to shine"
(Shine your light! Shine your light!)
Ya know, ya know, ya know
[Chorus]
Your weirdness is the sunshine
It shines on everything
Your weirdness is the sunshine
Ooh (Ba ba ba ba)
Your weirdness is the sunshine
Your head is off its string
Your weirdness is the sunshine
Ooh (Ba ba ba ba)
[Verse 2]
I grew up fast as lightning
I changed my name
No other child was like me
Why am I this way?
[Pre-Chorus — repeated]
Thinking I should end it lately
Then I saw a little light
She looked like an angel, baby
But her face was out of sight
She said, "Stop pretending, baby
You were born to shine"
(Shine your light! Shine your light!)
Ya know, ya know, ya know
[Bridge]
You're weird
And that's alright
You know you're strange
And that's alright
[Chorus]
And now I know that all my weirdness is my sunshine
It shines on everything
My weirdness is my sunshine
Ooh (Ba ba ba ba)
My weirdness is my sunshine
My head is off its string
My weirdness is my sunshine
Ooh (Ba ba ba ba)
[Outro]
Ooh (Ba ba ba ba) [×3]
It shines on everything
(Ba ba ba ba)
Your weirdness is the sunshine
It shines on everything
(Ba ba ba ba)
Your weirdness is the sunshine
Ooh (Ba ba ba ba)
```
## Source notes
- **Grounded** (released music, public posts, verifiable credits). The pronoun shift *your → my*, verbatim in the released lyric. The doubled pre-chorus and the outro's return to *"your"* (both confirmed against streaming; earlier ingests had missed them). *"I changed my name"* as the name-change anchor. The *EP4 / The Spoon* exchange as the intro's verbatim source. The full writing/production credits, including Sia's co-write and background vocals. Roy's own TikTok account of Sia as the source of the hook, and the 35-and-broke biographical context. The #weirdness quote-card campaign. The catalogue-wide 444 Hz mastering note.
- **Strong readings.** Lucius as *distorted light* (the arc's single biggest implication). The faceless angel as a persistent Mary-class figure (from the doubled appearance). *"Stop pretending"* as the [[Not Your Homie]] mirror running in reverse. The string line as *"the freedom was always yours"* rather than an on/off arc. Grounded in the material, but interpretive — labeled as such.
- **Framework** (esoteric, attributed — never authorial intent). The nigredo→albedo phase-read; the alchemical, Jungian, Gnostic, and Kabbalistic correspondences; the "vowel principle." The system *permits* these; it does not claim Roy intends them.
- **How we'd be wrong.** The honest falsifier: if Weirdness is simply a *"be yourself"* self-acceptance anthem — among the most universal messages in pop — then the albedo / distorted-light / integration apparatus is overlay, and *"I'm your weirdness"* is lighter than "integration grammar," just recycled EP4 stage-banter promoted to a hook. Two structural cautions keep that reading live: the whole arc rests on a *single* pronoun that **doesn't fully resolve** (the outro reverts to *"your"*), and choruses can vary for plain melodic reasons; and *"her face was out of sight"* may be ordinary vagueness (dark, turned away, dream-blur) rather than theological facelessness — read every unseen woman as Mary and you risk finding the figure by your own criterion. And this is explicitly a **threshold, not a terminus**: Lucius still exists after Weirdness in release order (EP7). The light is claimed here; the reconciliation is not yet finished.
> [!note]- The outro, unresolved — three readings held at once
> The return to *"Your weirdness is the sunshine"* after the *"my"*-claim reads three ways, and none needs the others to be wrong:
> 1. **Structural envelope** — the song begins and ends in the same register; the integration happens in the *middle*, framed by it.
> 2. **A gift turned outward** — having claimed his own light, Roy hands the blessing back to the listener: *your* weirdness is the sunshine too.
> 3. **Lucius persisting** — the outward-facing register simply hasn't been dissolved; the shadow's grammar is still in the room.
> Open on purpose. Worth sitting with before asserting one.
