# #1 Champion (la Conquistadora)
> **One-line reading.** A boast-anthem the ego does not survive: the champion announces his rank over and over, and the song he's certain is *about him* turns out to belong to the woman who walks through it and drops him dead.

Who is the Champion? [[Sir Lucius]] hears the chorus, recognizes himself in it, and, in the theatrical [[The Interview|*Watch Party* , triumphantly plays the track and announces *"this is another song about ME."* He is so busy enjoying the flex that he never hears the line where the woman singing it drops him dead. He claims the anthem, and the anthem dethrones him. It's the cleanest trap on the record, because the only ego that would fall for it is exactly the one the song indicts.
## At a glance
- **Era / release** — *Lucius Lullaby* (2026), track 8 of 15; 3:33; the album's **first crack** — the moment the ego first destabilizes, well before [[Weirdness]] finishes the job.
- **In one line** — the boast is sung in [[Mary]]'s voice, and the boaster is defeated by the song he thinks is his.
- **Who speaks** — **[[Mary]]** owns the entire chorus (the count, the money-verdict, the title). **[[Sir Lucius]]** has no line of his own; he sings only the title of the chorus, and only by climbing onto her voice. **[[Roy]]** is the ego underneath the character — the champion is Roy-in-Lucius-mode, diagnosed by what he can't see.
- **Key symbols** — [[The Prop Room#The Halo|The Halo]] (without a head) · [[The Prop Room#The Gun|The Gun]] · [[The Prop Room#The Crown|The Crown]] · [[The Rose]] (white) · [[The Mirror]] (inverted) · the count ("A-B-C, one-two-three")
## The song, mapped
The song is built on a single sleight of hand: everything that *sounds* like the champion's flex is, in the mix, sung by the woman he's flexing at. Following the released structure, five moves:
| Move | In the song | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| **1 — The boast that isn't his** | *"If you don't know 'bout me, you should know by now / I'm the number one champion in this town"* | The chorus arrives sounding like pure championship — rank, money, the demand to be known. But it's **Mary's voice**, start to finish. Every flex, in her mouth, is a verdict. The champion has no anthem; he has a title line he'll later climb onto. |
| **2 — The looking fails** | *"Never noticed what was underneath that dress… / Saw a halo but I didn't see a head, so I…"* | The pre-chorus stacks desire (the dress) onto holiness (the halo) and arrives at **no head** — no face, no person. The champion has exactly one instrument, the consuming eye, and it reads sign and body but never the one presence that won't reduce to an image. |
| **3 — The count answers, and kills** | *"…made a move like a fool, dropped me dead when she said—"* → *"A-B-C, count 'em, one, two, three"* | The verse breaks off **mid-sentence** and cuts straight into the chorus in Mary's voice. So "what she said" was never withheld: it's **the count.** He makes his move; she answers not with a rebuke but with creation's own grammar, and *that* is what drops him dead. |
| **4 — Conquest inverts** | *"She was La Conquistadora with a gun in her hand… fawning over no man… such a revolutionary"* | Verse two **arms** Mary. The title has been climbing a chain the whole time — **Champion → Conquistador → Conquistadora** — and it arrives at *Our Lady of the Conquest.* The conqueror is conquered. Mary isn't the prize; she's the force that defeats the prize-seeker. |
| **5 — The loop into the void** | The chorus stacks — twice, then twice more, finally the bare title **four times** to close | The boast that sounded like dominance becomes a thing that *cannot stop*: a man counting his rank into a room that has already turned to look at someone else. Structure with nothing left to structure. |
**And then the sound finishes the argument.** Across the close, Mary's voice fades, Lucius drowns her out, she goes silent, and he repeats the title a few more times entirely alone — the **last repetition a cappella, after the music has stopped.** The appropriation isn't a metaphor laid over the song. The song *performs* it: he takes the championship by overpowering the voice it belonged to, and his prize is to stand in the dark, repeating a word to no one.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the count as audible architecture
> The whole song is two counts wearing the same numbers. Mary's *"A-B-C, count 'em, one, two, three"* is a **creation-count** — the grammar that makes worlds, the same register as SOL's *"breath beneath all the verses."* Set against it is the champion's *"number one champion"* — a **rank-count**, the ego tallying its position. Identical numerical surface; two entirely different objects. The inversion isn't stated in a lyric — it's built into the arithmetic and made audible, one voice counting toward being, the other counting toward status. (This is the same move the album runs album-wide: false making set against true making, on the same record, in opposite directions.)
## What it means
A few claims cut across the whole song.
**The hinge is in the looking, not the dying.** It's tempting to file this as an ego-*death* song, but the diagnosis is sharper than that: the champion can read a **halo** (status, holiness) and a **dress** (desire), but not a **head** (the face, the person). He fails on the one presence that won't flatten into an image. The song diagnoses the self by what it *cannot perceive* — ego-diagnosis, not ego-death. He doesn't lose a fight; he demonstrates that he has only ever had one way of seeing, and it doesn't work on her.
**The mirror, inverted.** The spectacle-self lives by reflection: it announces its rank so the room will mirror it back. He comes to Mary looking for a surface that returns his image — and she returns *nothing.* No face to flatter, no reflection to win. She is the one who sees and is not seen-and-flattered; she cannot be surveilled. This is [[Concepts/Witnessing vs Surveillance]] dramatized in four lines. Meet her with the consuming gaze, and the self that knows no other way to look simply ends there.
**The vocal split *is* the argument.** Mary owns the whole chorus — count, verdict, title. Lucius can sing *"number one champion"* only by joining her voice and then drowning it out. He claims the song (*"about ME"*) and owns none of it: he takes the title by silencing its true singer. That's not a reading imposed on the track; it's staged in the mix, whatever theology you do or don't hear underneath it. *(This detail is a 2026-06-15 correction to the archive — see Source notes. The whole chorus being Mary's, and Lucius joining-then-overtaking rather than sharing, supersedes the earlier assumption that the champion sang his own boast.)*
**The trap needs the ego to spring it.** In the *Interview*, Lucius identifies with the anthem and so misses the very verse that executes the character singing it. The song works *because* the ego it indicts cannot resist claiming it — you have to be Lucius to fall for it, and being Lucius is the whole crime. The dramatic-irony punchline lands at the close: the "champion" *wins* the title, gets the word all to himself — and his prize is to stand in the dark repeating *"number one champion"* a cappella, after the music has stopped, boasting to no one. He wins the word and loses everything that gave it meaning.
**Counterfeit making vs the real thing.** The album keeps staging fake creation against the genuine article, and this is the genuine side. The false makers are [[Lucius Lullaby]]'s counterfeit rescue-voice and [[Great Time to Be Human]]'s Chemist who *"made a god"* by error; the true thing is Mary's *"A-B-C, count 'em"* — creation-grammar — and [[SOL]]'s *"breath beneath all the verses."* Pointedly, the false rescue-song and this true creation-song sit on the same record, running the operation in opposite directions.
## Characters
- **[[Mary]]** — named, faceless (*"a halo but I didn't see a head"*), armed (*"gun in her hand"*), autonomous (*"fawning over no man"*), revolutionary. She sings the entire chorus, and the count is what drops the champion dead. This is the catalogue's **real, grounded faceless-Mary anchor** — the halo-without-a-head is the project's recurring marker of the faceless divine-feminine, the same face-out-of-sight as [[Weirdness]] (*"her face was out of sight"*) and the motherly [[Ballerina Boy]] outro.
- **[[Sir Lucius]]** — the "champion" the song unseats. In the *Interview* he claims it as *"another song about ME"* and owns none of it: no line of his own, the title taken by joining then silencing Mary, and he ends boasting alone into a dead room.
- **[[Roy]] / The Fool** — the champion is the ego in Lucius-mode, but the figure is also **The Fool** (Tarot, card 0). The visualizer caption (signed *El Roy*) renders the encounter as the Rider-Waite-Smith Fool almost line for line — *"white rose in my left hand… stepped off the ledge"* — and the lyric itself says *"made a move like a fool."* The leap is the Fool's leap of faith on trust rather than sight; here it's **fatal, not triumphant.** The failure is of seeing, not of devotion — the white rose in his hand the whole time doesn't save him. *(The Fool is a live Roy symbol across the catalogue — cf. [[It's Your Time]]'s "I ain't nothing but a Fool" — not an import.)*
- **La Conquistadora** — *Our Lady of the Conquest*, a real Marian title (the oldest Marian statue in the United States, venerated in Santa Fe). The militarized Madonna the song hands to Mary, gun in hand.
- **Credited humans, not ciphers** — **MERCY** (Mercedes Colletta Britton) and **Cici Ward** sing real backing vocals here (Cici Ward is also a co-writer); **tony esterly** co-wrote and co-produced; **Dan Adams** played the violin and viola under the string arrangement. Real collaborators, not symbolic figures.
## Artifacts
**QUEEN BINAH** · `TEETH OF A WHALE` — This is the clearest named-Mary song, and its central image, 'Saw a halo but I didn't see a head,' is the faceless divine-feminine whose theological seat this guide identifies as exactly this artifact's Binah… → [[Artifacts - Drawings and Sketches|analysis]] · [gallery ↗](https://mirrors.jagwartwin.com/gallery)

## Symbols
- **[[The Prop Room#The Halo|The Halo]] (without a head)** — holiness with no persona to flatter; the holy sign read, the face never seen. The clearest emblem of the failure-of-seeing at the song's core.
- **[[The Prop Room#The Gun|The Gun]]** — the militarized Madonna. This guide leans toward sovereignty/revolution over self-defense (paired with *"fawning over no man… such a revolutionary"*), though the register stays partly open.
- **[[The Prop Room#The Crown|The Crown]]** — *"Queen of California"* repurposes the Marian *"Queen of Heaven"* into the album's Hollywood register; the crown collides with the gutter (*"on the corner doing her time"*).
- **[[The Rose]] (white)** — the visualizer's *"white rose in my left hand"*; the Rider-Waite Fool's rose. The sign of the quest, in his hand the whole time and not saving him.
- **[[The Mirror]] (inverted)** — the spectacle-self comes looking for reflection and recognition; Mary returns neither face nor reflection.
- **The ledge / the leap** — *"stepped off the ledge"* — the Fool's leap of faith, rendered fatal.
## Connected songs
- **[[Weirdness]]** (track 13) — the album's *only* albedo track, the first true crossing, where the faceless feminine returns (*"her face was out of sight"*). If Weirdness is the crossing, **#1 Champion is the first crack** in the ego that makes it possible.
- **[[Ballerina Boy]]** — the motherly, Mary-class faceless-feminine outro voice; part of the same cross-song Mary thread.
- **[[Not Your Homie]]** (track 11) — where Lucius **resells** the championship revoked here: a crown already taken from him, hawked again three tracks later.
- **[[Lucius Lullaby]]** (track 2) — the counterfeit rescue-voice: Lucius **counterfeiting** the Mary-function. The false side of the making thread that #1 Champion answers as the true side — same record, opposite directions.
- **[[Great Time to Be Human]]** (track 3) — the Chemist who *"made a god"* by error: a false maker, set against Mary's true *"A-B-C, count 'em."*
- **[[SOL]]** (track 14) — the true-creation counterpart: Mary's count and SOL's *"breath beneath all the verses"* are the genuine article against the album's false makers.
- **[[City of Angels]]** (track 10) — *"Queen of California"* lands the Marian *"Queen of Heaven"* into the Hollywood / City-of-Angels register.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the Marian registers, and which one is "Mary"
> The song runs at least three Marian registers at once, and the collision may be the point.
> - **La Conquistadora** (*"gun in her hand… fawning over no man… such a revolutionary"*) — the militant conqueror-Madonna, the title chain's destination.
> - **Queen of Heaven → Queen of California** — the sovereign Marian title bent into the album's Hollywood key.
> - **The Magdalene register** — *"Queen of California on the corner doing her time"* (the sacred-feminine brought low: street-corner, serving a sentence, yet still *Queen*); *"stumbled into the church… on her knees… making everyone stare"* (devotion as disruption). Crown + corner + gun reads holy-and-fallen at once.
>
> The open question isn't *which* register wins — it may be that the **collision** (gutter + crown + gun) is the whole idea, refusing to resolve into a single clean figure.
>
> One discipline note this guide keeps: *"mopping up the flora, fawning over no man"* — the word *"flora"* is transcription-confirmed (Apple-verified). It's open only at the level of *meaning* (literal flowers/field vs. a proper name); don't over-resolve it.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the Fool, and why it isn't a Hall-of-Mirrors cipher
> The Fool reading is unusually well-grounded for a tarot claim: the visualizer caption (signed *El Roy*) gives the Rider-Waite-Smith Fool almost line for line — white rose, stepping off the ledge — the lyric says *"made a move like a fool,"* and the companion *Half the Man* (Father) post shows Roy in a jester/Pierrot ruff. The Fool is a standing Roy symbol (also the "I'm 33" board; *It's Your Time*'s *"I ain't nothing but a Fool"*).
>
> Worth flagging because it was tested and ruled out as a puzzle mechanic: the rose / Fool / Rosy-Cross thread was run exhaustively as a **Hall of Mirrors** unlock code — over a thousand generated forms across eight lenses, plus an oracle check — and returned **zero.** It is load-bearing *symbolism*, not a seeded cipher. (A faint echo worth noting: *"caught thorns"* rhymes with the Dumbledore-line *"Reborn for this, caught thorns for this."*)
> [!note]- Advanced reading — Kabbalah: severity overruling its own shadow
> On the Tree of Life, **Mary (Binah)** and **Lucius (Hod / Geburah)** share the left-hand Pillar of Severity, with Mary at its head. So *"Mary drops Lucius dead"* reads as the **source of severity overruling the shadow-intelligence lower on its own pillar** — judgment terminated by the very origin of judgment. And *"saw a halo but I didn't see a head"* reads as the **crown reached at the top of the ascent** (Keter-through-Binah): present, but *unpossessable* — Cordovero's *atarah*, the crown Malkhut becomes the moment she ascends, which is the same engine as the catalogue's *"reclaim your crown."* The halo is right there; it simply cannot be grasped by the eye that came to grasp it. *(Framework, not authorial intent — Kabbalah is demonstrably in Roy's toolkit, but the specific placements are the reader's.)*
> [!note]- Advanced reading — Hercules, Leo, and the champion as initiate
> Read through the **Labors of Hercules**, *"champion"* is initiatory language — one *changed by ordeal*, not gym-bro motivation — and the Leo labour's Strength-card iconography (the one who has *tamed*, not the violent conqueror) maps onto *"La Conquistadora"* as the gendered figure who has mastered rather than crushed. Track-8 placement, just after [[Welcome to the Circus]], suggests champion-status emerging *through* the Circus. This is a title-suggestive strong read held under a deliberate back-fitting guard: the per-song labour-map stays loose on purpose, and one genuine open question is whether #1 Champion is a *successful* Leo-completion or Lucius merely **naming a destination he can't occupy** — which, given the vocal split, is more than plausible.
> [!note]- Advanced reading — the pronoun engine and the direction-swap
> By pronoun audit, #1 Champion carries the album's **highest self-assertion I:you ratio — 5.5** — making it the "I"-engine, the self-branding pole of *Lucius Lullaby.* That's the setup for the reversal: the most relentlessly *I*-driven track on the record turns out to be sung by someone else. It also sits inside a longer arc across the catalogue — a **faceless-inversion direction-swap.** In 2018 Roy dedicates songs *to* the faceless (they receive the blessing); by 2025–26 the faceless one *gives* the blessing (object-of-care becomes source-of-care). Here she appears exactly when the recursion destabilizes — she interrupts the looped boast and ends it.
## Lyrics
```
I'm the number one champion in this town
A-B-C, count 'em, one, two, three
You got a little bit of money, but it don't come cheap
If you don't know 'bout me, you should know by now
I'm the number one champion in this town
Mary, Mary, so contrary
Extraordinary, she was scary when she walked by
In the blue jeans, she got good genes
Queen of California on the corner doing her time
She know everybody wanna hold her hand, and I
Never noticed what was underneath that dress, oh, I
Saw a halo but I didn't see a head, so I
Made a move like a fool, dropped me dead when she said
[Chorus: A-B-C, count 'em, one, two, three / You got a little bit of money, but it don't come cheap / If you don't know 'bout me, you should know by now / I'm the number one champion in this town] (x2)
Stumbled into the church
Mary, Mary was there
On her knees, quite a scene
Making everyone stare
She was La Conquistadora with a gun in her hand
She was mopping up the flora, fawning over no man
She know everybody wanna hold her hand, and I
Never noticed what was underneath that dress, oh, I
Saw a halo but I didn't see a head, so I
Made a move like a fool, dropped me dead when she said
[Chorus] (x2)
I'm the number one champion in this town
Mary, Mary, such a revolutionary
Queen of California on the corner doing her time
Mary, Mary, such a revolutionary
Queen of California on the corner doing her time
Mary, Mary, such a revolutionary
Such a revolutionary, such a revolutionary
[Chorus] (x2)
I'm the number one champion in this town
I'm the number one champion in this town
I'm the number one champion in this town
I'm the number one champion in this town
```
## Source notes
- **Grounded (released music, public posts, public video).** Album and credits (*Lucius Lullaby*, 2026, track 8 of 15, 3:33, Big Loud Rock; writers Roy English / tony esterly / Cici Ward; produced by Roy English & tony esterly; Dan Adams strings; MERCY and Cici Ward backing vocals). Mary is **named in the released lyric** — the catalogue's grounded faceless-divine-feminine anchor. The vocal arrangement (whole chorus in Mary's voice; Lucius joining then overtaking the title; the a cappella close after the music stops) is confirmed via the recording and the official visualizer — a **performance/visual** class of evidence, the same standing as the audio-confirmed *Ballerina Boy* outro. The structural hinge (*"…when she said—"* cutting straight into *"A-B-C, count 'em"*) is observable in the released audio. *La Conquistadora* and *"Queen of Heaven"* are real Marian titles; *"Mary, Mary, so contrary"* is the Mother Goose rhyme. Paratext: the [[The Interview|Roy v Lucius series]] (Lucius plays the track, *"another song about ME"*); the **YouTube visualizer** (a woman in a red corset/dress on a dark teal field) and the public @jagwartwin Instagram reel promoting it ([[Public Posts]]), audio-credited *"Jagwar Twin, sir lucius · #1 champion,"* caption signed *— El Roy.*
- **Strong readings.** Ego-diagnosis (the failure is in the looking); the mirror inverted / [[Concepts/Witnessing vs Surveillance]]; the vocal split as the argument (appropriation enacted in the mix); the song as a trap for Lucius; *"what she said"* = the count; the Champion→Conquistador→Conquistadora inversion; the Fool reading; false-making vs true-making; the sterile-loop close. Grounded in the material, but interpretive.
- **Framework (esoteric/syncretic — never asserted as authorial intent).** The Tree-of-Life placement (Binah over Hod/Geburah; the *atarah* gloss); the Labors of Hercules / Leo mapping. The system *permits* these; it doesn't claim Roy intends them.
- **How we'd be wrong (the honest cautions).** The plainer reading is a **femme-fatale boast track** — the braggart undone by a woman out of his league, the female hook overpowering him as ordinary arrangement, with the Marian theology layered on top. *"Mary"* is an extremely common name, *"quite contrary"* is just the nursery rhyme, and *"gun in her hand, fawning over no man"* reads as a tough-independent-woman figure at least as readily as a militarized Madonna. With **three co-writers**, the sacred-feminine depth may be *emergent* rather than encoded. And the "trap for Lucius" leans on the *Interview* staging as much as the song. The falsifier is clean: the writers describing this as a straightforward boast/femme-fatale/diss track would demote the Marian-unseating to an overlay. What holds the reading up regardless is grounded — the arrangement really does hand the whole chorus to a woman's voice and let the boaster overtake and silence her.
- **Correction history.** Originally the whole chorus was filed as the champion's boast; audio/visual confirmation on 2026-06-15 established that the chorus is **Mary's** and that Lucius sings only the title *by joining then overpowering her* — he takes it, he does not share it. That discovery also resolved the once-open question of the withheld *"when she said—"* line (it's the count). Separately, the *El Roy* "white rose / ledge" poem was briefly mis-filed under [[SOL]] and re-attributed to this song on 2026-06-27; the two share only a *finding-your-way-back / leap-on-trust* theme, not the poem.
