# Down to You > **One-line reading.** After the album spends six tracks exposing the systems competing for your attention, this one turns authority inward and downward at once — *"it all comes down to you"* as both your responsibility and the light descending into you — and answers the earlier tracks' bargain with the oldest refusal in the book: you cannot live on bread alone. > [!info] Album & credits > **Album:** *33* (2022, Big Loud Rock) — **track 7 of 10** · 3:48 > **Written by** Roy English & Matt Pauling · **Produced by** Matt Pauling (sole) > **First released** 2021 as a pre-album single · **Full lyrics:** [Genius](https://genius.com) · streaming > **▶ Listen:** [Official video (YouTube)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hJvRIhagf8) First put out as a 2021 single with its own ARG microsite, then folded in as the pivot point of *33*. It's the album's inward correction: the moment the record stops diagnosing the attention economy and hands the whole problem to the listener. And it's unusually direct about it — Roy has said, in his own words, that this is where his central idea *"is said very plainly."* ## At a glance - **Era / release** — 2021 single (on Strange Theory), then **track 7 of 10** on *33* (2022). One of four pre-release singles for the album, alongside *It's Your Time*, *I Like to Party*, and *Happy Face*. - **In one line** — authority comes *down* to you and heaven comes *down* to you; same word, both meanings, on purpose. - **Who speaks** — [[Roy]], almost entirely in the second person. This is the most other-directed song on the album: it says *"you"* eighty times and *"I"* exactly once. The listener is the subject. - **Key symbols** — [[Fire]] (the flame at the crown) · [[The Mirror]] (*"heaven in your eye"*) · [[Concepts/The Sacred Truths/Hermeticism - As Above So Below]] (printed on the song's own title card). ## The song, mapped It's a repeat-heavy song — two short verses of teaching wrapped in a hook and a mantra that both recur until they've drilled in. But the repetition is the argument: it hammers the double meaning before it ever explains it, then lets one flipped preposition do the real work. Following its own moves: | Move | In the song | What it does | |---|---|---| | **The hook** | *"It all comes down to you… down, down, down, it all comes down"* | Establishes the title's hammered double meaning — **responsibility** *and* **descent** — before a word of teaching. | | **Verse 1: be it** | *"What is it that you seek? / In your mind, you must be it"* · *"nothing ever changes 'til it changes when you be it"* | The doctrine: you **embody** the thing, you don't acquire it. Becoming precedes change. | | **…the crown-flame** | *"Shine your light… like the flame at the top of your head"* · *"a light will find its way from heaven"* | The light is both **arriving** from above and **already sited** at the crown — a flame you carry. | | **…heart over head** | *"once you find it, can't unwind it with your head on / so listen to your heart"* | The head/mind split, stated outright: the mind can't reason away what the heart has found. | | **The mantra** | *"the one, the one, the one…"* → *"you are the one"* | The identity refrain — pointed *away* from external authorities, *toward* what only the self can become. (Repeated past a dozen times, the insistence tips into its own gentle joke about insistence — the song over-serves *"the one"* the way it deadpans everything else.) | | **The mutating refrain** | *"Heaven in the **sky to** the Earth below"* → *"Heaven in your **eye from** the Earth below"* | **The key move.** One flipped preposition (*to*→*from*, *sky*→*eye*) turns a one-way descent into a two-way exchange. | | **Verse 2: false gods** | *"What's the God you believe in? / Is it fame? Is it— (money, money, money…)"* | Interrogates worship — and names the exact idols the earlier tracks were selling. | | **…the refusal** | *"One cannot live on bread alone… something inside you pulling you into the feeling"* | The scriptural answer, then the same tag as Verse 1: trust the heart, *be it.* | | **The outro** | *"(up from below)"* · *"(it all comes down)"* | Ad-libs stack the whole thesis in miniature — and *"(up from below)"* is the **only** place the upward direction is spoken aloud, closing the circuit. | | **The ending** | *"You are the one, the one, the one…"* | The song fades on **identity**, not on the hook. | The logic, start to finish: authority comes *down* to you → so **be** it, don't seek it → trust heart over head → *you* are the one → heaven and earth trade both ways *through* you → reject fame and money as gods → even bread isn't enough; follow the inner pull → back to who you are. ## What it means **The title is a double movement.** *"It all comes down to you"* is first the plain idiom of ownership — after an album full of external forces, the buck stops with the individual. But the lyric refuses to let *"down"* stay figurative. Light *"finds its way from heaven,"* the flame sits at the crown, heaven moves *"to the Earth below."* So the title also means the divine **descends** to you. And the reversed refrain plus the *"(up from below)"* ad-lib complete the circuit in the other direction: heaven rises *from* the earth too. Responsibility and emanation turn out to be the same gesture — you are where heaven lands *and* where it rises from. > 🚪 *Watch the official video all the way to the closing card: it prints AS ABOVE SO BELOW in plain capitals, played straight as ad copy. That heaven-down, earth-up circuit reads as a quote, and the somebody being quoted is not a pop star: [[Concepts/The Sacred Truths/Hermeticism - As Above So Below|he is a legendary sage with an emerald tablet]].* **Become it; don't buy it.** *"In your mind, you must be it," "be the beat you're beating," "nothing ever changes 'til it changes when you be it"* — the desired state is embodied, never acquired. It's among the clearest statements of the principle the album keeps circling (compare *It's Your Time*'s *"remember, don't acquire"*). Fittingly, *"you must be IT"* was also printed, word for word, on the song's 2021 microsite: *"No one else can be IT, you must be IT for your own unique journey."* **The heart overrules the head — out loud.** *"Once you find it, can't unwind it with your head on, so listen to your heart."* This is the project's central heart/mind theology surfacing plainly inside a *33* lyric: the head is the faculty that would *"unwind"* — undo — what the heart knows, and authority is handed to feeling. It ties straight to [[Concepts/Duality]] and to the [[Sir Lucius]] frame, where the mind divorced from the heart is the whole problem, and *mind must serve heart.* Lucius doesn't appear on this track by name — but the *"head"* the song warns against is exactly the faculty he personifies. He's the implied antagonist of the line. **The album's bargain, answered with the wilderness refusal.** *"What's the God you believe in? Is it fame? Is it money?"* names the precise false gods the earlier tracks put on offer — [[Pay Attention (feat. little luna)]] and [[I Like to Party]] deal in exactly this currency. And *"one cannot live on bread alone"* is the reply Jesus gives the tempter in the wilderness (Matthew 4:4, quoting Deuteronomy 8:3), refusing fame and money as gods. There's an even sharper version of this hiding in the food imagery — see below. One caveat holds the read honest: Roy has confirmed this song answers the album's thesis *"very plainly"* (below), so the answering *gesture* is on record — but that a specific pointed *callback* to *Pay Attention* / *I Like to Party*'s exact currency was intended, verse-to-verse, is our inference. The false-gods vocabulary is unmistakably shared; the deliberate cross-track aim is the plausible read, not a stated one. **"You are the one" is sovereignty, not ego.** The relentless *"you are the one,"* in context, aims the listener *away* from every external authority — institution, celebrity, savior, ideology — and toward what only the self can become. It's ownership, not inflation: no outside party can *be it* for you. (Whether it leans toward responsibility, divinity, or identity is a live question — the descent imagery and the crown-flame tilt it past self-help toward something closer to divinity realized.) **The counter-reading, kept honest:** stripped of all the framework, this is also just a very good empowerment anthem — *"it's up to you,"* with light-and-heart flavor, and a Top-40 hook. The lyric is genuinely sparer than any of the architecture below, and it works as a straight motivational song. The scripture is grounded; the *"answers the bargain"* structure is the read. Both are true at once, which is the point of a song built to work on the radio and in the rabbit hole. > [!note]- Advanced reading — the bread/cake axis > The wilderness refusal gets sharper when you set it against the track it's answering. [[I Like to Party]] *sells the manufactured confection* — *"bake a truth with a lie / then we sell 'em the cake,"* *"Devil's Food."* *Down to You* refuses with *"one cannot live on **bread** alone"* — and then goes further: even bread, mere sustenance, isn't enough without the inner pull. So the album runs a three-step food logic: **cake** (the empty bargain-food you're sold) → **bread** (honest, but insufficient on its own) → the *"feeling"* within (the only thing that satisfies). It's not incidental that these two are also the only two *33* tracks Matt Pauling produced alone — they're a matched pair, the temptation and its refusal. > [!note]- Advanced reading — the flame at the crown > *"Shine your light… like the flame at the top of your head"* sites the light at the **crown** — Keter at the top of the Tree of Life, the halo, the Pentecostal tongue of fire, the crown chakra, all at once. The move matters: the song isn't only invoking light *arriving from elsewhere*, it's locating a flame the listener *already carries.* The spark is placed, not merely called for. Read next to [[Fire]] and to the sovereign-within motif the manifesto-card wave keeps hitting — *I Like to Party*'s card literally reads *"you're the Kingdom, you're the King."* > [!note]- Advanced reading — the esoteric resonances (Hermetic, kingdom-within, individuation, the One) > These are framework resonances — the heaven↔earth *movement* is in the lyric; the naming is the frame. Held loosely, all at once: > - **As above, so below (Hermetic).** The mutating refrain stages the axiom as a *reversible exchange*, not a static hierarchy — heaven to earth, then heaven-in-the-eye *from* below. Unusually for a framework read, this one has a **public visual anchor**: *"AS ABOVE SO BELOW"* is literally printed on the song's own 2021 title card (see [[Concepts/The Sacred Truths/Hermeticism - As Above So Below]]). It's the earliest public appearance of the axiom in the whole catalogue — years before the *"I'm 33"* board and its full Kybalion transcription were decoded. > - **Divine spark / kingdom within.** The crown-flame and the pull *"inside you"* name a latent inner reality *realized, not acquired* — Luke 17:21's kingdom within. *"Heaven in your eye"* also brushes the seeing/Eye motif (compare *It's Your Time*'s *"the Eye to see"*). > - **Individuation (Jung).** *"Be the beat you're beating," "you must be it"* read as self-*realization* — becoming what one already contains — rather than self-invention. > - **The One (Neoplatonic).** The hammered *"the one… you are the one"* brushes Plotinus's One, the source all things emanate from — apt, given the descent imagery — and the popular *"you are the One"* chosen-figure motif. Resonance only; assert neither as intent. > [!note]- Advanced reading — "you are it" is standing Circle doctrine, not a one-off > *"You must be IT"* on the 2021 microsite predates by four years the 2025 MAGIK ARG's *"you are it"* password (which is itself grounded to Alan Watts). So *"you are it"* isn't a 2025 coinage — it's a standing slogan of the [[The Circle|Circle]] doctrine since at least 2021, and this song is one of its earliest public statements. ## Characters - [[Roy]] — the sincere voice, handing authority to the heart. In the MB interview (below) he steps out from behind the *"you"* and speaks as the song's *"I,"* naming this as the plain statement of his mirror doctrine. - [[Sir Lucius]] — present only **by contrast**: the *"head"* that would *"unwind"* the heart's knowing is the faculty he personifies. No billing on the track — he's the antagonist the line argues against. - **"You" / the listener / "the one"** — the song's true addressee and de facto protagonist. At you-80 / I-1, it's near-pure address; *"you are the one"* makes the listener the sovereign figure. ## Artifacts **AN AGED AGED MAN** · `ALICE 211` — The Carroll clue that fed this artifact's code cluster — "I saw an aged aged man, A-sitting on a gate" — was posted as a symbol-marked (▵▢◑) clue on the Down to You SoundCloud, per the Discord community arch… → [[Artifacts - Songs, Demos and Mints|analysis]] · [gallery ↗](https://mirrors.jagwartwin.com/gallery) **VENUS** · `DLD` — The 33 lyric 'can't unwind it with your head on / so listen to your heart' is this guide's documented surfacing of the heart-over-mind theology whose heart-pole is Venus/Netzach, the dove Roy names as his own… → [[Artifacts - Concept Images and Emblems|analysis]] · [gallery ↗](https://mirrors.jagwartwin.com/gallery) **DOWN TO YOU** · `WHAT IS IT THAT YOU SEEK?` — This is the MINT artifact of the released 33 track, and its code 'WHAT IS IT THAT YOU SEEK?' is the song's verbatim opening line; the glowing-core wireframe figure in a galaxy renders the lyric's inner-light… → [[Artifacts - Songs, Demos and Mints|analysis]] · [gallery ↗](https://mirrors.jagwartwin.com/gallery) ## Symbols - [[Fire]] — *"the flame at the top of your head"*: the divine spark localized in the listener, a flame already carried rather than only light arriving. - [[The Mirror]] — *"heaven in your eye"* brushes the seeing/reflection motif — and Roy frames the whole song as the mirror doctrine (*"we're all mirrors to each other"*). - [[Concepts/The Sacred Truths/Hermeticism - As Above So Below]] — the reversible heaven↔earth refrain is the axiom enacted in a lyric; it's also printed as a sigil on the song's own title card. ## Connected songs - [[Pay Attention (feat. little luna)]] — the external attention-force whose offerings (*fame, money*) this song names and refuses; *Down to You* is its inward, scriptural answer. - [[I Like to Party]] — the *"cake"* the album sells; *Down to You* answers with *"bread alone."* Also the only other *33* track Matt Pauling produced solo. - [[Another Way II Heaven]] — its descent-and-emanation is this song's *"comes down to you"* made cosmological; *"it all comes down to you"* reads as *you are one of the One's perspectives.* - [[Imagine A World]] — *"a God you designed"* ↔ *"what's the God you believe in?"*; shared self-authorship and false-gods vocabulary. - [[Soul Is A Star]] — the album's grounded [[Joni and the Prophet Lineage|Joni]] anchor (a credited co-write); arc-sibling, its *"Fame and Power from The Thieves"* ↔ this song's *"is it fame? is it money?"* - [[It's Your Time]] — the embodiment-principle sibling: *"remember, don't acquire"* ↔ *"you must be it."* - [[The Circle]] — the album's closer and the inward return this song's descent-and-rise enacts; shares the *"you are it"* doctrine. - [[Lucius Lullaby]] — the head/heart-authority sibling across albums: where *Down to You* hands power to the heart *"out loud,"* the *Lucius Lullaby* song stages the competing internal voices — the same fight over which faculty gets to rule, one instructing, one dramatizing. A resonance, not a plot link. > [!note]- The Joni Mitchell question — a candidate second dialogue > [[Joni and the Prophet Lineage|Joni Mitchell]] has her own song called *"Down To You"* (from *Court and Spark*, 1974), and the case that Roy's title is talking to hers is stronger than it first looks. Three things stack up: > 1. **It's the phrase, not just the title.** Joni's official lyric carries the very same resolving hook — *"it all comes down to you."* Roy isn't only echoing a title; he's landing on her exact closing line. > 2. **Her song is a duality text too.** Joni's *"Down To You"* runs on the same both-things-at-once engine as Roy's *"you are the one"* / heart-over-head: *"you're a kind person / you're a cold person too,"* *"you're a brute — you're an angel."* Sibling arguments. > 3. **The album already grounds Joni.** *33* carries a *confirmed* Joni Mitchell co-write on [[Soul Is A Star]] (heard as a *"Woodstock"* sample) — so there's a Joni channel demonstrably open on this record, which raises the odds on a nearby echo. > > It stays a **candidate**, not a confirmed link, for one disciplined reason: *"it all comes down to you"* is ordinary idiomatic English, and Roy's track carries no Joni credit. The governing rule is worth stating plainly — *a credited influence elsewhere on an album raises a nearby echo's plausibility, but it doesn't turn an uncredited song into a sourced reference.* The vertical-rotation flourish (Roy bending the flat responsibility-idiom into cosmic *descent*) is softer still — English gives *"comes down"* the falling sense for free. So: a persuasive candidate for *33*'s **second Joni dialogue**, held one notch below grounded. (This is distinct from her *"Woodstock,"* which is the grounded *Soul Is A Star* sample.) > > **What it would mean, held as reading and not proof.** The interest is less whether Roy borrowed the title than what he does with it. Both songs use *"down to you"* the same way grammatically, then land at opposite temperatures. Joni's is an *accounting*: lovers and certainties pass, and the responsibility returns to a divided, possibly self-addressed *"you."* Roy keeps that inward turn and rotates it vertical. His *"down to you"* is where heaven both lands and rises (*"Heaven in the sky to the Earth below" / "Heaven in your eye from the Earth below"*), and the demand is not to own the contradiction but to *become the change moving through it* (*"you must be it," "be the beat you're beating"*). The sharpest version: **Joni says the contradiction comes down *to* you; Roy says the divine answer must come down *through* you.** Joni resolves in acceptance of an uneven self; Roy resolves in an initiatory demand. Her unstable *"you"* (lover, stranger, or the singer to herself) also rhymes with Roy's *"Is it you? Is it me?"*, where addressee and speaker collapse into one face, the song's own mirror-doctrine surfacing (see [[The Relational Mirror]]). None of this strengthens the *case* for the link, which still rests on the three points above; it is only what the dialogue would *say* if it is there. ## The song beyond the audio For a single, *Down to You* had an unusually deep paratextual life — a manifesto video, a companion ARG microsite, and a second life as an object inside the *Hall of Mirrors* game. Most of it is grounded fact, and most of it is missing from anyone's casual listen. **The manifesto video and its title card.** The official music video (2021, hashtag *#Matter*) is the **third** manifesto-card video in the 2019–2021 wave, after *Happy Face* and *I Like To Party* (see [[Concepts/The Manifesto Cards]]). It closes on a card that reads: *"PRESENTED BY JAGWAR TWIN"* / *"WHAT IS IT THAT YOU SEEK?"* / a sigil-triad — *"NONE"* · [JT glyph] · *"AS ABOVE SO BELOW"* — over a manifesto paragraph: *"To change the world one must first change the concept of the world. To do that one must change the concept of one's self. The concept one holds of the self makes one see the world as they do."* Two things worth flagging: *"AS ABOVE SO BELOW"* here is the **earliest public appearance** of the Hermetic axiom in the whole canon, and *"NONE"* as the answer to *"WHAT IS IT THAT YOU SEEK?"* brushes the No-Thing / empty-mirror motif. And there's a deadpan bit riding along with all of it: the whole card wave delivers its esoterica in the register of *ad copy* — *"PRESENTED BY JAGWAR TWIN,"* *"BROUGHT TO YOU BUY"* (the pun intact) — so a Hermetic axiom lands with the cadence of a late-night infomercial title card. The seeker's question, *"WHAT IS IT THAT YOU SEEK?,"* gets served like a product tagline. It's played straight, which is the joke. **The companion microsite.** `thechaosorder.academy` (live 2021 through 2025) was the single's own ARG site — branching *"path you chose"* journeys, the *"you must be IT"* doctrine, and lore lines that sit right up against the lyric: *"Any way that you go / It all comes down to you"* and *"The universe is ever expanding and we as humans can have any experience we desire… so long as we first imagine it and second take action to achieve it."* It's an early predecessor to the 2022 *Hall of Mirrors* ARG. It also lands the same joke the title card does: the cosmic journey resolves into a marketing CTA. The site tells you *"YOUR JOURNEY HAS ENDED BUT IT HAS ALSO JUST BEGUN"* — and then, in the same breath, *"LISTEN NOW… STREAM DOWN TO YOU."* The ever-expanding universe deflates into a streaming button. The bathos is on purpose; the ascension and the ask-to-stream are the same screen. **Roy names the song directly.** In *A Conversation with Jagwar Twin* (a ~2021–22 interview with host "MB"), Roy points to this track as the plainest statement of his central idea: *"we're all mirrors to each other, and we're all one thing, one collective human race. So beginning to see others as yourself starts to change things — the world's in our hands, each individually, to change. It's touched on, on* Down to You *— 'it all comes down to you,' it's said very plainly."* This matters for the whole page: it means the *"comes down to you = your responsibility to change the world, via the mirror doctrine"* reading isn't just analysis — it's **authorial intent, on record.** > [!note]- Advanced reading — the song's life inside *Hall of Mirrors* > *Down to You* has a genuine afterlife as an ARG object: > - **A minted artifact.** In the *Hall of Mirrors* game it's a minted piece in the *"MINT BURIED"* realm (room #142 / catalog #138), carrying the code *"WHAT IS IT THAT YOU SEEK?"* — sitting alongside the other four song-mints (*The Circle*, *Imagine a World*, *Another Way II Heaven*, *Happy Face*). > - **A clue-carrier.** The official audio's description quietly carried a Lewis Carroll line — *"I saw an aged aged man, A-sitting on a gate"* (from *Through the Looking-Glass*) — which fed the game's *"A-SITTING ON A GATE"* / *"ALICE 211"* codes. In 2023 Roy posted the audio in the community Discord with the nudge *"you may want to look in the description,"* confirming the song's own metadata was a live clue. > [!note]- Advanced reading — the Neville Goddard lead (open) > The title card / microsite manifesto — *"change the concept of one's self… see the world as they do"* — is near-verbatim **Neville Goddard**: *"change your conception of yourself and you change your world."* It's flagged as a groundable named-influence lead for the concept-of-self / mirror thread, but not yet verified against a Goddard primary, so it stays a lead rather than a citation. (See [[Concepts/The Pattern]].) ## Lyrics ``` It all comes down to you, comes down to you Down, down, down, it all comes down It all comes down to you, comes down to you Down, down, down, it all comes down It all comes down to you, comes down to you Down, down, down, it all comes down It all comes down to you, comes down to you Down, down, down, it all comes down What is it that you seek? The 2021 single and its status as one of four pre-album singles. The pronoun count (you-80 / I-1), making this the most other-directed song on *33*. The official video and its manifesto title card, verbatim. The `thechaosorder.academy` microsite and its lore. Roy's own statement, in the MB interview, that the song is where his mirror doctrine *"is said very plainly."* The scriptural source of *"one cannot live on bread alone"* (Matthew 4:4 / Deuteronomy 8:3). The song's *Hall of Mirrors* footprint (the minted artifact; the aged-aged-man clue; Roy's 2023 Discord drop). - **Strong readings.** The title's double movement (responsibility *and* descent); the bread/cake axis against *I Like to Party*; *"be it"* as the embodiment principle; the head/heart split as the project's theology stated outright; the false-gods verse as an answer to the album's earlier bargain; *"you are the one"* as sovereignty rather than ego. Grounded in the material, interpretive in the framing. - **Candidate.** The Joni Mitchell *"Down To You"* dialogue — persuasive (shared hook, shared duality-thesis, a Joni channel already open on the album), held one notch below grounded because the phrase is ordinary English and the track carries no Joni credit. The existential-to-incarnation transformation (responsibility that comes *to* you, rotated into a heaven that comes *through* you) and the unstable-*"you"* mirror rhyme are readings of what the dialogue would *mean*, not added evidence that it exists. - **Framework (esoteric, syncretic — not asserted as authorial intent).** The Hermetic *"as above, so below"* as the refrain's logic (though the axiom *is* publicly printed on the title card); the crown-flame's Keter/chakra/Pentecostal cluster; the kingdom-within and divine-spark reading; Jungian individuation; the Neoplatonic One. The Neville Goddard influence is a live, unverified lead. - **How we'd be wrong.** If the plain empowerment-anthem reading accounts for the lyric as fully as the emanation/heart-mind/wilderness-refusal architecture does — and the lyric really is sparer than any of that scaffolding — then the architecture is a layer the song invites rather than requires. We keep that falsifier on the table. ## Read next - [[I Like to Party]] — the cake to this song's bread; its matched-pair twin. - [[Pay Attention (feat. little luna)]] — the attention-force whose false gods this song names. - [[Another Way II Heaven]] — the descent made cosmological; the album's creation myth. - [[The Circle]] — the closer and the inward return; where *"you are it"* comes home. - [[Sir Lucius]] — the *"head"* the song hands authority away from. - [[Concepts/The Manifesto Cards]] — the 2019–2021 card wave this video belongs to.
